New Xbox One System Update Begins Rolling Out Tonight

Tonight, we will begin rolling out the next Xbox One system update. Again, I’d like to thank all of the Xbox Live members who previewed features with us and shared some of their feedback. Their input helped shape this system update, and we look forward to expanding our list of previewing Xbox Live members in the coming months.

Here’s the final breakdown of the features rolling out to Xbox One systems starting tonight and over the next few days:

  • Game and app saves and updates. A game save progress bar will show you the status of your game saves. You will also be able to easily tell what games and apps are being updated or have been updated recently.
  • Friends improvements. Notifications will be added to see when favorites and friends sign in to Xbox Live. This was one of the most frequently requested features, so we made it a priority to include it in this update. Also, friends who are in multiplayer will be identified in the friends list.
  • Kinect voice and motion improvements will continue to be fine-tuned for quality and reliability of Xbox One commands. For example, we’ve updated some of the gesture functionality to reduce false positives on non-hand objects triggering gesture commands.
  • Improved GameDVR video quality through compression algorithm improvements.
  • Blu-ray player supports 50 Hz video output for content recorded at 50 Hz. We’ll also be updating the Blu-ray Player app in the coming days to round out these improvements.
  • Controller and headset adaptor firmware updates will reduce audio static and improve wireless connectivity.
  • Silent reboot after system updates and system update on demand now available. If your console is in Instant On mode, the update will happen automatically and return to standby upon completion. This means you won’t need to power on your console after an update moving forward. If you want to take future updates when available without waiting for your console to do it on its own, we’ve added this option under system settings and you’ll be able to use it next update. It will only show as available when there is an update to take.
Friends Notifications

Thanks again for everyone’s feedback on particular features previewed these past few months and keep the feedback coming.

System Update, Xbox One By Larry Hryb, Xbox LIVE's Major Nelson

  • Juan

Will this fix the problem with some headsets that use the headset adapter that makes us sound really bad in parties?

    • xPutNameHerex

      Yes, it should.

      • Juan

        I really hope so.

  • Jon Taylor

Any chance of a 1080p update?

    • Tony G

Xb1 does 1080p. Talk to the game devs

      • Jon Taylor

New trials doesn’t, it’s getting ridiculous now….it’s Trials for gods sake??

        • http://instagram.com/nandopenafiel Nando Penafiel

Like what Tony G said, talk to the Game Developers. And if your problem with the Xbox One are the resolution sizes for games, then you have your head in the wrong place.

          • Jon Taylor

Not a problem for me, I love my xbone, but it’s the main reason they’re getting trounced by Sony in the sales, I know 3 people who have just switched because of this, and only one has kept his xbox

          • http://www.reddit.com/r/X1UIMockups/ ilovegoogleglass

            It will get better….
            #E32014

          • Jon Taylor

It needs to, I’m running out of xblive friends, half of them have switched to the ps4

          • http://www.reddit.com/r/X1UIMockups/ ilovegoogleglass

            It’s kinda funny how Wolfenstein is 1080p 60fps and trials isn’t tho…

          • Jon Taylor

We’ll see, it will probably suddenly drop to 720 on xbox one before launch

          • Mike P.

Dude, just buy a PS4 already. You want one, so get it and stop complaining on a blog. 1080p isn’t an “update,” and you know that, so stop trying to be “smart” or “funny” with your post, because you are neither.

Jesus christ. Forza 5 runs at 1080p, do you really think the Xbox can’t handle Trials at 1080p? Seriously? You’re a joke. Switch to your PS4 – because the PS3 was up and running perfectly at launch, right? Jesus, you people are ridiculous.

          • Occupy_Sesame_Street

Paid sony trolls are all over these days.

          • https://twitter.com/NandoPenafiel_ Nando Penafiel

Well, tell them to do some research first before switching. I’m not trying to start a war, but if your reason for switching to the other platforms are because of resolution sizes, then they are doing it wrong.

          • Jon Taylor

I agree totally, but you can’t deny the xbone looks to be the far weaker console for a higher price, and that’s all people see.

        • BigDickKamen

lol buy a serious game plz, which clown plays trials then complains about resolution?

          • http://twitter.com/rogXue rogXue

what exactly is a “serious game” because if I need to I’ll go buy “how to manage a checkbook” right now! Must be rough to be a serious gamer.

        • http://www.reddit.com/r/X1UIMockups/ ilovegoogleglass

Seems like a port. It’s getting a patch for 900p. As of now it runs at 800p.

        • Tony G

Ya no idea why Trials isn’t 1080p. But it’s a developer issue not hardware. This time next year it will be all 1080p once the devs are more comfortable programming for the system.

    • Matthew Bunton

Sadly I seriously doubt it as there are hardware and technical limitations with the Xbox One. It is a shame but hopefully Microsoft will have some great games in the future to make up for it.

grassyknoll summarised the issue best on Eurogamer’s website he wrote. ‘Most modern games use a modern technique known
as deferred rendering to form their games. Games that use this type of
rendering need a frame buffer thats at least 48MB for 1080p (but can be
far far higher 48MB). The max a frame buffer can be on the Xbox One is
32MB, so resolution & effects have to be toned down to fit.
Microsoft knew that most modern multiplatform games would use deferred
rendering & went with 32 MB ESRAM anyway. This isn’t developers /
      Sony’s / Nintendo’s or anyone elses fault.’

His explanation makes a great deal of sense and has been confirmed by many other technically minded people. The main point is that Microsoft built a media box first and games console second.

      • Jon Taylor

Yeah, I’m gonna switch to ps4 I think, my friends already have

      • Death Dealer

That is correct, but not the entire picture. Developers don’t necessarily have to only use the eSRAM as a framebuffer and can combine both DDR3 (slower, but can easily be used for streaming and tiling resources) and the eSRAM. This does however require a lot of reprogramming to make it work if an engine isn’t suited for it to begin with.
Using only the eSRAM for the moment is the quick and easy way to do it and MS should have anticipated this a little more. But keep in mind if the APU die would have contained 64MB on it, it would have been a trainwreck to dissipate the heat and would have led to other problems. Scaling the picture from 900p to 1080p is not that much image degredation, especially with the correct techniques.
Games being 900p on the Xbox One at the moment are due to two things. MS being late with their SDK optimizations (DirectX12 only releasing late 2015 with samples coming out only late this year) and developers not willing or not being able to optimize due to buget/time constraints.
The Xbox One is very much capable of rendering games at 1080p/60fps with all kinds of bells and whistles, but developers are unable to produce them because of this. MS release parity clause is also a problem in this case as MS would rather have the game released at the same time than later on with optimizations (that’s why you see resolution increasing patches).

        • Matthew Bunton

Thank you for expanding upon that I feel that I have a better overall understanding of the issue now.

Agreed I find 900p perfectly acceptable as a gaming resolution and feel that too much is being made of hitting 1080p.

There is also a lot of misinformation going around so hopefully these posts will explain a little better to everyone.

  • Tony G

    Great update

  • http://twitter.com/rogXue rogXue

Do the preview people already have the latest version?

  • sam

I hope this will fix my re-player list on some of the games

  • MrRadiolips

Will the new controller update support PC compatibility?

    • bickle2

That’s a driver issue on PC, not a controller issue.

  • daquijones

I wish I could have the option to either customize or turn off the friends feed. Even customizing notifications would be cool. The length of time it takes for a notification to disappear off the bottom centre is ridiculous especially when you’re really into a game or movie. Not a fanboy as I own both but Sony did it pretty well with how simple it pops out on the top left corner.

  • Cryra

Please add the guide menu back, going to the dashboard and into the friends app is tiresome.

    • daquijones

I agree with you 100% especially if you’re in a noisy environment where the kinect can’t recognize your commands properly and you have to keep shouting like a crazy person. Worse if you have an accent like mine.

      • http://instagram.com/nandopenafiel Nando Penafiel

How is it tiresome? It’s actually just as simple. And if you use the Kinect. it’s simpler.

        • Cryra

“dashboard, go to friends, invite, dashboard again, select game window” – Laborious

          • https://twitter.com/NandoPenafiel_ Nando Penafiel

Or say “Xbox, Go To Friends”, Invite, “Xbox, Go To (Game/App)”.

Or say “Xbox, Go To Friends”. Invite, Double Tap (B) button.

There are so many ways on how to do it now. It all depends on how motivated you are.

          • Cryra

Motivated? This isn’t meant to be work.

Oh & Kinect? Seems to have trouble understanding me & many, i want to use a controller – it’s quicker and easier. Well, it used to be.

          • https://twitter.com/NandoPenafiel_ Nando Penafiel

Well I wanted to say lazy, but I didn’t want you to take it personally. Its just two or three extra button clicks. It’s not that hard.

          • Cryra

I never implied that it was a difficult process, just fairly frustrating; a task that makes the eyes roll after completing it hundreds of times

          • https://twitter.com/NandoPenafiel_ Nando Penafiel

Why is it frustrating now If you had to complete it hundreds of times with the guide?

Either way, I’m 100% content if they bring back the guide or not.

          • Mike P.

So, then, don’t play an Xbox. You clearly do not enjoy what it offers. The experience you are looking for can be found elsewhere for cheaper – so why not go there and stop complaining? You are on the internet, so you clearly knew what you were getting into before you bought the system.

          • Cryra

i’ll play what i want, thank you very much. The guide was easier, it currently takes too long without having the kinect shoved down your throat. i’m not complaining, I’m providing feedback.

          • http://twitter.com/rogXue rogXue

“xbox, go to friends…..xbox go to FRIENDS….XBOX….GO…..TO……FRIENDS….!

There I made it more realistic for you.

          • Cryra

Exactly, the kinect is a tiresome gimmick. Even major has it turned off, seeing that was amusing.

          • bickle2

He can’t have active cameras in his office for security reasons.

If you don’t find it useful, it’s because you don’t want to

          • Cryra

            it’s not useful.

          • https://twitter.com/NandoPenafiel_ Nando Penafiel

I’ve never had a problem with my Kinect. So it wasn’t realistic to me. Sorry.

          • Jon Taylor

When you snap party, it should contain your 5 most recent friends you’ve played with at the top, ready to select to join/invite

          • Mike P.

Your problem was getting there, no one said you needed to use the kinect to select every menu item. It can bring you there within seconds. Use the controller, since you prefer it so much, to do the rest.

          • bickle2

“Xbox, snap party”, invite, select friends, press b to close

          • wookster

Takes too long for it all to load. It’s not about button presses it’s about the clunky UI. I expected this new generation of consoles to be fast loading and snappy. Instead it seems slower than the 360. Feels like everything you press has to load a separate app rather than the 360 where everything just feels meshed together.

          • Cryra

            agreed 100%

    • xPutNameHerex

It’s the same number of button presses to get to friends as it was on the 360. Hit the center button, go left once (was down on the 360), and then hit A. No longer, just to the left instead of down.

      • https://twitter.com/NandoPenafiel_ Nando Penafiel

That’s what I’ve been trying to say. It’s not that hard. haha

      • Cryra

the guide menu was faster, you’re also forgetting going back; not just going forward.

        • Mike P.

No, it was not, it took a while to load. It takes far less time to just tell the system to go there with your voice.

          • wookster

except to invite a friend to a party you must load the friend app, find the friend, then wait for the friend’s page thing to load which usually takes longer than it should and then you have to go to send, then to invite. On the 360 you opened the guide, went to friends, scrolled down and pressed x to invite them and bam. Not to mention you then have to wait for the party to snap and load because if you just close out of it before it’s loaded then it doesn’t actually put you into the chat until you snap it again. Voice or no voice, the 360’s guide menu was a lot easier and faster than the xbox one’s system.

You can then throw on top of that the risk of your game crashing in the process (bf4 and pvz:GW)

          • Cryra

voice is inconsistent, i want to use buttons.

    • bickle2

I think what people really are asking for is for friends to be decoupled from the feeds for fast and clean access. Not the guide back.

  • Marc D

Don’t bring back the guide menu it’s so old and stupid and we need external hard drive support.

    • http://www.reddit.com/r/X1UIMockups/ ilovegoogleglass

      I think they should…

      • Marc D

        To each their own.

    • http://twitter.com/rogXue rogXue

wow… yeah you are by far on your own with that opinion. The guide menu was the fastest thing on the 360, it cut out all the BS that was added after the blades were nixed.

      • Marc D

Well I’m sorry I would rather them use their time for useful things like external hard drive support instead of old stuff that is not 100% needed.

        • Cryra

We’re getting that, and why not both?

          • Marc D

Because its not needed unlike hard drive and directx 12.

          • Cryra

both are already in the works. Not needed for you, but possibly needed for others.

          • Marc D

I get that it’s in the works but they don’t need to focus on other things when they have their hands full with those two.

          • Cryra

they have their hands full, so you’re internal?

          • Marc D

By hands full I mean they should be working on that instead of adding new stuff that is not needed right now.

        • http://twitter.com/rogXue rogXue

Ext HD support is already in the works, this’ll be something for down the road. Start petitioning now to get it later sort of thing ;)

          • Marc D

Oh I see well I don’t care for it if they do bring it back make it optional.

          • Cryra

            optional would be fine.

  • Chris Ransom

    3d support for bluray please!

  • Some guy

A xbox 360 update could be usefull too you know.

    • http://twitter.com/rogXue rogXue

they released that, it’s called the xbox one ;)

      • http://twitter.com/rogXue rogXue

btw before anyone rails me for this it was a funny ha ha joke. please refrain from beating me with a soap on a rope.

        • https://twitter.com/NandoPenafiel_ Nando Penafiel

I thought it was pretty funny! haha

        • Marc D

I think everybody got it. It’s all good I still use my 360 too for Minecraft and such. Can’t wait till it comes to the one.

          • Jon Taylor

Me too, but don’t you appreciate how quiet the Xbox One is when you fire up the 360

          • Marc D

Yes I do I feel like I have a car show in my room when I turn it on now haha.

          • Carnage Rules

You turn on the 360?? mine hasn’t been on since Nov 21st

      • Some guy

I’d prefer an update that won’t prevent me from playing my games though.

    • Riddick Snipes

What for? The 360 has all it needs.

      • Some guy

Fixing the bugs, more then 32gb of external storage.
it’d be nice to have the dashboard in one language instead of a mix of english in french too.

        • bickle2

I believe the 32gb is a hardware or FAT table issue, not a software one.

I’m afraid you’ll have to take the French issue up with Ottawa. Id live to see a real survey of how many native born Canadians do not speak English at least well enough to not HAV it slathered over everything

          • Death Dealer

FATX has a limit of about 2TB. There is a file size issue with it, not a file system issue.
There also used to be an issue with the USB drives being over 16GB large too, but that was fixed and thus the limit raised to 32GB.

          • Some guy

What’s so different between external hard drive and the one they ship with the 360 to cause a problem? USB is slower then SATA but I think that’s all there is to it. At the very least they could allow multiple 32gb partitions on the same drive.

          • Death Dealer

The 360 reserves space on USB devices by making hidden folders and adding padded files to them to reserve that 32GB of space. The limitation is arbitrary and I hope MS doesn’t make the same mistake with the Xbox One.
USB Flash memory can be faster than the SATA hard drive in the system, but there is a bandwith limitation on that too because of the reservation for Kinect.

          • Some guy

Oh right, even if you ask for the xbox to use all of it for storage it still only create a huge hidden xbox folder.
            Too bad then.

      • http://www.dazzlemedeals.com BPitt

Yes, the 360 has always been far more stable. This thing needs all the updates they can throw at it. I am so dissatisfied with my crashing, glitchy XB1.

        • Mike P.

Dude, you’ve been posting this all over the article and you seem to be in the minority here. Maybe the space you are keeping your system in isn’t ideal, or maybe you have a faulty console – sometimes that happens. Contact Xbox Support, leaving comments on a blog post aren’t going to solve anything, and you know that.

        • Occupy_Sesame_Street

Yeah those red rings of death just screamed stability!

          • http://www.dazzlemedeals.com BPitt

That was a hardware issue which they fixed and replaced my machine. Ran like a champ for 6 years.

      • ElektroDragon

        EXCEPT STORAGE!

        • Death Dealer

I second this. That 32GB limit should be removed by now and we need larger hard drives. I almost have my second 320GB filled up with GoD games.

  • Riddick Snipes

    Trials fusion in 900p.

    • https://twitter.com/NandoPenafiel_ Nando Penafiel

      Cool.

    • Marc D

You’re not a pixel counter are you just wait for directx 12.

      • http://www.reddit.com/r/X1UIMockups/ ilovegoogleglass

        What do you mean?

        • Marc D

It seems like all he is worried about is the pixel count and not the gameplay.

          • Riddick Snipes

That’s all anyone should b worried about. The gameplay will always be there even if its 200p.

      • Riddick Snipes

I most definitely am. Pixel counters are able to see and enjoy different resolutions. Put it this way, if this direct x12 let’s their games run in 1080p native, then after I get over the fact that it should have launched with the one, i will buy a one.

        • Marc D

          Lulz at Sony ponies

        • Marc D

And no you are unless you sit like 1 foot away from your screen.

        • bickle2

The biggest problem stems from a rumored booting of a secondary GPU to run the home screen and video playback. 1080p is coming on games, but they’re having to do a lot of metal rewrites and start from scratch if this is the case

I defy you to tell the difference in an objective, double blind xperiment reliably. If it was 720 I’d see your point.

          • Riddick Snipes

Listen slick. If I went home from work today and grabbed any one of my 500 blurays but it displayed it in 900p, I’d notice. Defy that.

          • Riddick Snipes

Its almost like ur saying its OK that the one only does 900p. Rayman legends looks better on my 360 than ac4 on a one. Do u know why?

          • bickle2

The short answer is that Ac4’s assets were developed with 360/ps3 in mind Rayman however likely was not, and the much more limited set of models and textures were easy to tweak and re render for more powerful systems. Other than that, Appkes and oranges.

          • bickle2

That shows you also don’t know anything about film, whose actual resolution changes constantlyI remember when people were applying pixel counting to it, it was hilarious. And owning 500 Blu-rays does not make you an expert in anything. I have 1500 movies and TV shows or thereabouts. But I only claim expertise from sitting on people’s figurative knees who definitively DO Know what theyre talking about.

I’m talking a real, double blind controlled test. Where no one knows what is what, you’re not A/Bing the same, labeled shots. I’m saying that if I feed you 500 images, you won’t get better than random guessing at picking out the 1080 ones over the upscales 900p

          • https://twitter.com/NandoPenafiel_ Nando Penafiel

Why would it display in 900p? That doesn’t make sense.

          • ElektroDragon

Because Xbox One weaksauce. 900p upscaled to 1080p.

          • https://twitter.com/NandoPenafiel_ Nando Penafiel

No. Why would Blurays have to upscale? That doesn’t make sense.

    • Senses Failed

Technically 800p without the day one patch to up it to 900p

    • ElektroDragon

At least you get 1000 gamerscore on X1. On PS4, this particular game has no Platinum and only 12 trophies. So FOR ONCE I will be buying a multiplatform game on Xbox One.

  • Joshua Pavlica

Any chance we’ll get an audio setting to output game audio through Speakers AND headset (a la the Xbox 360) for us livestreamers so we don’t have to use the Kinect mic for chat?

    • Cryra

that’s not already in? Well, it took 5 months to be notified when our friends are online, so I’m not surprised.

      • Joshua Pavlica

Unless you have the Kinect Microphone turned on, any game capture devices (like my Elgato), won’t be able to pick up the system sounds or game audio when you have something plugged into the Optical Audio out port.

It’s a relatively simple fix, I’d imagine (as it was added to the 360 relatively early on in its life cycle). But I have yet to receive word on it even after contacting support and the Major directly about this issue. :/

    • Jon Taylor

Weird, mine comes through tv speakers and headset…?

      • Jeremy Roberts

Mine also. Turn up your tv

  • ungeheier

I hope the auto reboot doesn’t turn on TVs and leave them on. I had to turn off the feature because I came downstairs once to findy tv had been on for some time. Hreat way to burn out a bulb.

    • Mike P.

If your tv is off and you tell your xbox to turn off, it will trigger the TV to turn on. That’s a problem hopefully that will be addressed sometime in the future. The system itself though, does not auto reboot for anything, unless it prompts you that it will be doing so.

The “auto-reboot” you’re commenting about isn’t an auto reboot. It’s a change to the way updates worked. Previously when you were in standby mode, when an update hit, you had to manually turn the system on. The problem was that people didn’t know when updates would hit and would think the “Xbox, On” feature was just being unresponsive. Now it’s as if nothing ever happened and you turn on your system as you normally would, whichever way you prefer.

      • bickle2

Most TVs use a single command for turn on or off. So his concern is valid

The system should never reach the final boot stage though.

  • http://www.dazzlemedeals.com BPitt

How about the crashing or hanging up in between apps 3-4 times a week? Do other people experience this with their box? Or how about it taking 30 seconds to get to the friends list? The Kinect sensor can’t find my floor. Does this update fix that?

    • http://people.ign.com/beholdmyhatred BeholdMyHatred

      Stop complaining bich

      • http://www.dazzlemedeals.com BPitt

Answer the question, does your box have these same issues? Maybe mine is defective. I expect more out of a $500 machine.

        • http://people.ign.com/beholdmyhatred BeholdMyHatred

Its a games console not a app console buttsniff, play games idiot

  • Senses Failed

Oh thank god! I can finally opt out of the beta now right? Same release as public, opt out before next wave starts?

    • Jon Taylor

Yeah I got out too, couldn’t chat to friends or join parties….never again

      • og_dinkis

        How do you sign out?

  • Xenokai

Been in this preview for awhile this is by far the best update they have done, sign on notifications is the best thing added back to xbox since launch. System feels way more connected with the sign on toasts. Hopefully we get a nice DLNA/USB background music player in the next update. xD

    • ElektroDragon

Wait till you get 1000 friends. Every 2 seconds, sign on notification that probably still sounds like an achievement. Epic fail.

      • Zcrisis2

you can set it so it only notifies you when your favourite friends come online, no need to have sign in notifications turned on for everyone.

      • http://www.jameswoodcock.co.uk/ James Woodcock

You can select to display (and hear) just your favourites logging in, not your whole list.

      • Xenokai

That wont ever happen, because the xbox one offer a favorites only option when it coms to sign on notifications. So you only see who you want. I use All friends option because i like to see the popup all the time.

  • digitallife

Hook us up with an xbox one game sale and we are all squared away…

  • Mark Gibson

    still no update yet….

  • ImTheMetalLord

For the 360 Looks like a bunch of DLC’s will be on sale including some for Skyrim, Borderlands 2, Pinball FX 2 tables, Armored Core Verdict Day, Walking Dead Season 1, Arkham Origins, Assassin’s Creed 4, F1 2013, Thief, Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, Dishonored, Dead Island, Tropical 4, Saints Row 4, Pacman CE DX+, State of Decay and a hand full of games as well. And I mean a BUNCH of DLC’s!!!

    • Sigognac

Indeed. (Sorry to be out of subject here, but it is interesting) You are right and it will include some games paired with their “DLC”. We could add that there will be downloadable contents for State of Decay, Wolf Among Us, Pac Man CE DX, Saints Row IV, Tropico IV, Batman Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, amidst others.

    • Professor Oak

So I was right about the borderlands sale, cool beans, hope all this dlcs and stuff don’t break me :)

    • maxy

F1 2013 DLC on sale are you sure???????

      • ImTheMetalLord

        According to xbldb dot com

        F1 Classics – Classics Tracks From $9.99 to $4.99
F1 Classics – Classics Edition Upgrade Bundle From $12.49 to $6.24
        F1 Classics – 1990 Edition From $9.99 to $4.99

And I did verify on xbox dot com that those are the current prices.

        • maxy

          Great!! Thank you man!!!!

  • Occupy_Sesame_Street

If I did not do the last controller update that came out with Titanfall will I still be able to do so?

    • Death Dealer

      Yes

  • Arturo Vargas

I would like to see an notification pop up before your controller battery dies. Many times has this happened to me during a Titanfall match.

    • https://twitter.com/NandoPenafiel_ Nando Penafiel

That’d be awesome! But I know when my battery is almost dead when I don’t feel any vibration from the controller when I’m playing Titanfall.

      • Arturo Vargas

Thanks for the tip, I’ll have to remember that next time!

    • ElektroDragon

You mean like PS4 has? :)

      • http://people.ign.com/beholdmyhatred BeholdMyHatred

        Get outta here

      • Daniel

Oh right, I guess you need that when your controller runs out of battery after 4 hours. :)

        • Rza

          BURN!!!

      • roozbeh, again

        Pause for downloads?

      • evilfangs .

That’s because the PS4 controller battery dies every 4 hours.

    • http://twitter.com/rogXue rogXue

      this!

  • ElektroDragon

Still no external storage support. I think it will never happen. And there’d better be a way to turn off friend online notifications independently, since not having constant friend notifications that sounded like achievements was the most welcome change with the X1 interface. If you made friend notification sound like an achievement again, EPIC FAIL.

    • Michael Košut

There’s just one epic fail and that’s PS4.

      • ryder4life22187

The epic fail is the XB1. You really think all these price cuts and bundled free games are because it’s a success. My store still has over 6 units left from launch of the XB1.

        • ImTheMetalLord

And ‘your store’ is a direct reflection on the whole world? I think I would prefer a larger data pool before I made such a broad statement.

          • ryder4life22187

Never said it was. But I can say there are countless people on here who have said similar things and also have said stores they’ve been to are flooded with XB1’s. You don’t need a larger data pool to figure it out that the XB1 is failing when they’ve been getting price cuts and have to bundle a game just to sell a unit.

          • ImTheMetalLord

Supply doesn’t determine fail or success anyways. Maybe MS simply has a better strategy to make sure that the supply doesn’t dwindle. I’m not defending a position here I’m just saying your data is flawed to make such a broad statement.

Also when it comes to gaming consoles it’s not where you start that matters its where you finish and I believe there is a lot of forward thinking that went into the One that is not available on the PS4. See you in 2 or 3 years and then we’ll decide fail or success. Way to early to call it IMO.

          • ryder4life22187

MS main problem is they need to get away from the cable aspect of the XB1. We buy consoles to play games for the most part and happen to watch movies/shows on the side. Until MS figures it out and puts games first, and gets rid of those ads on the dashboard I don’t seem them progressing very much. Until then I don’t see the point of owning one as my TV can download and play games as well like the XB1.

        • Michael Košut

          Um….. what about….gtfo :)

    • ryder4life22187

We never got true external support storage for the 360, as 32gb doesn’t count. I doubt MS will do anything about it and they will dodge it for as long as they can. Unless their is some kind of security flaw that they don’t want found yet.

  • GPW

Still no support for cable / satellite t.v. in the UK? The HDMI in on my X1 is feeling most neglected.

    • http://www.jameswoodcock.co.uk/ James Woodcock

It’s coming soon, still in preview (beta) at the moment.

      • GPW

Ah I see. Well I’m sure all the kinks are being worked out…

  • Cody R

Umm when is this coming out its been 6 hours since it was announced it was coming

    • ImTheMetalLord

Try holding your power button to turn off your One all the way then wait like 30 seconds and turn it back on. It should prompt you to begin to download the update.

    • Cody R

got promted for a controller update, did that, but no system update.

    • Cody R

well as far as i can tell, maybe i got the update ( i cant tell if i have or not) and if i did it didnt Fix the headset issue with my A50s, back to PC and PS4.

    • ImTheMetalLord

I was just looking at pics on Flickr of the updates and it looks like under system there is a link for system updates. Also saw on xbox dot com if you do a search for xbox one updates there is a place you can go to see if you have the latest update.

      • Cody R

great thanks for your help, i thought there was a System Update Selection added, which would mean i still dont have the update. Thanks Again

      • Cody R

yea nothing, but my OS version shows higher than the one list on their website. So i havent a clue. would be nice to have a way to force a search for an update.

  • jam201984 .

can anyone tell me what all the badges are on that gamer pic above ??

    • ImTheMetalLord

I blew them up as big as I could on my 32″ monitor and this is the best I can give you in order.
OG is the big letters on the 1st one
      Xbox Live
      360
      The New Xbox
      Kinect
      One
Everything else is simply unreadable and I don’t know enough about the badges in general to help anymore than that.

      • Death Dealer

They are special launch badges for the events that Major participated in. On the Xbox 360 they are on top of the gamercard.

    • Gazza!!!

Add him as a friend on your Xbox one.

  • Faisal Munayam

unless you can roll out an update that can make the dashboard like the xbox 360, remove the kinect, make games hit 1080p, a cheaper price tag than the ps4 & possibly a smaller better looking design then ms you might get somewhere.

nobody wants to be spied on or even use kinect, i used the voice gestures though, you could’ve just stuck a mic on the console for that LOL.

serious flop this gen though, if gears & halo turn out to be bad then you might as well build your casket.

    • Michael

Go play your precious PS4 …

      • Faisal Munayam

i do… it’s like the xbox 360, fast, in game text/pic/voice messaging & can load up player profiles quickly.

the xbone struggles at that & misses any voice/pic/vid messaging. the people app is annoying & slow i couldn’t stand it, the 360 UI is way better for that. i went back to my 360 to play ghosts because the graphics difference wasn’t big on the xbone being 720p.

you can fanboy all day but i owned both consoles & only recently sold the bone, bf4 looks better at higher 900p resolution & i like the whole facebook profile pic integration. I was & still am a big fan of the 360, but the kinect has ruined the bone.

        • Ryan Blaine

The PS4 is better because it has an antiquated interface?
It’s not slow at all, in fact it’s instant if you opened it previously. Maybe you didn’t clear your cache.
Battlefield 4 looks very odd and washed out on PS4. The framerate is also garbage.

    • Pinkeye69

Price at some retailers for the Titanfall bundle in the UK : £349.99
Price of the PS4 in the UK with 1 game : £384.99

      • Faisal Munayam

it’s a little too late, i think if they remove kinect & go at £299 with titanfall then they could regain sales. titanfall is a decent game but its no cod killer

        • roozbeh, again

Since when is 6 months from release too late?

    • ImTheMetalLord

Isn’t life great. We all have choices. You choose to jump ship and play an inferior console and I choose to wait and see how all this plays out.

I remember a day when the 360 wasn’t much either but look at it now. It blew away the PS3. I remember all my friends were buying PS3’s because they were so much better at launch and for the first few years. Trouble is they never improved not once. In fact they got worse. We’ll see. We’ll see.

    • MarcusFenix

No one wants their credit card information stolen (as in, several million at a time) or have their entire network pwned by a hacker group for months on end, but hey….no one’s perfect right?

  • Pinkeye69

I’d like a screenshot ability in the next (may/june) update,, “Xbox, take screenshot”. Uploads to onedrive. We have DVR, surely screenshot isn’t that complex.

    • Nizar Warcraft

nice, now i want that too

    • Digiadam

      Agreed. PS4 has it.

      GET TO IT MICROSOFT!!!!!

  • Jimmy DoneGood

Incredible update. Sad that Ps4 can’t enjoy the same things. Xbox One seem so much more advanced than PS4.

    • Nizar Warcraft

Have you seen the Playstation Eye thingy? It’s a absolute joke compared to kinect. It’s quite funny

      • Michael Košut

PS4 is a joke and I own PSP, Vita and PS3…. Xbox Won me.

        • Lance Malcomson

I have owned all the Playstations (except PS4) and all the Xbox systems and I prefer Xbox hands down. the PS4 controller feels cheap and there are no good game for it the interest me so I doubt I will get a PS4.

      • Pinkeye69

I remember the PS2 eyetoy camera being very wonky in terms of pickup and focus. The 360 camera was better quality but sadly underused at the time.

    • Digiadam

Xbox is and always will be better than anything Sony can come out with. Heck I also have a PS4 but that was only for Infamous…..now it collects dust.

    • evilfangs .

Microsoft a software company is always going to beat Sony when it comes to updating and the software side of Xbox one.

  • Nizar Warcraft

The update before this actually ruined something. If you record a game clip and go to the friends feed, it will show up as always, but you can’t highlight it, press menu button and delete it, you have to play the video and THEN you can delete it. I don’t understand why they removed the option to delete the video from the feed.

  • Nizar Warcraft

Another thing I want is to adjust how long game clips are when you say “Xbox record that”. I have lost so many good moments because its only 30 seconds and the whole record timing system seems very inconsistent. When I say xbox record that, does it keep the last 15 seconds and continue to record for the next 15, or is it just the last 30 secs or is it the following 30 secs after saying the phrase. CONFUSING

    • Pinkeye69

Same here, I’ve done an “xbox record that” and sometimes it’s 30 seconds, sometimes it’s 28 seconds.
Same with the DVR. I selected last 5 minutes but the time it records varies from 4m 45s to 5 minutes. I’d like an option to say “default record that time is : 15s|30s|45s|1 min”.

      • dibils

i believe it doesnt record if you go to the dashboard so that might explain the varieties in the record times

    • Danilo Viana

It records the last 30 seconds. It doesn’t record the start screen so if between those 30 second you went to the start screen your capture will skip those moments.

Also you can at any time say “Xbox snap game DVR” and choose “end video here”, it will ask for the time (30 seconds, 1 minute, 3 minutes, 5 minutes) and will record the last X minutes of gameplay. If instead you choose “start new capture” it will start recording from the moment you chose the option up until 5 minutes have passed.

      • Nizar Warcraft

I don’t want to snap anything during a multiplayer match. I want to record something really quick and continue playing without having to mess around in the DVR menu every single time I want to keep some cool stuff i just did in a game. We want to customize the length of the clips ecorded when you say the magic words “Xbox Record That”. It’s easy to crop the best stuff in Upload stuido when you are done playing. Just give us the option…….

        • Danilo Viana

Yes, it would be cool to have that option. At least to increase the time to 1 minute. Maybe 5 minutes for the record that command is a bit excessive but 30 seconds is really too short.

  • iShaun 95

Has anyone got the update yet? I live in the UK and it’s 12:00 PM, still waiting! :)

    • Emanuel Correia

      me too

      • iShaun 95

I can’t stand this lol, knowing I should be able to get the update yet I can’t. I need this update now lol

        • Bully of Smeg

          Same………nearly 2pm and still nothing.

          • iShaun 95

Hopefully soon dude, thanks for the response though!

          • Chris Knibb

I left mine on overnight and when i woke it was ready to update. (Newcastle-UK)

  • Lance Malcomson

Great update, but where are the game sales for the One?

  • scrapplejoe

    from the xbox forums:

The most recent update that was rolled out to the update preview
community, xb_rel_1404.140411-1830, is starting to roll out to the
general public tonight. While the preview of the April system update is
winding down, the update previews for SmartGlass and OneGuide will
continue across multiple preview waves. We will also continue to engage
on the forums to read your feedback and requests, as well as continue to
investigate issues that you identify. Here are a few common questions
and answers regarding next steps in the update preview:

    Q. Will we receive another 1404 update to bring us to the same level that the general public will be at?

    A. No, the build you are now on is the same one that is being rolled out to the general public.

    Q. What happens to the Update Preview forums now?

    A. The forums will remain online, and active. There are still active
investigations that the developers are engaged on with members of the
update preview community, and we are still reading your feedback on what
you like, and what you don’t. Also, the update previews for SmartGlass
and OneGuide will continue on and will span multiple system update
previews. Please continue to post your bug reports and feedback!

    Q. When will we get another system update to preview?

    A. We’re still working on the exact date, and will let you know when as
soon as we can, along with what changes will be present in the new
build. But it will be SOON!

  • fur low

Now they just need to mail all xbox one owners an external gpu that will compensate the xbox ones measely 1.25ish tflop gpu, and maybe we can finally have a next gen console that plays multiplat games in 1080p, you know, like the ps4…

    • http://soundcloud.com/ViRUSfromMARS Jaffa Cake King

That made me laugh, nice one.

    • Bully of Smeg

I love my multiplat games and can’t wait to play some more multiplat!

    • http://www.RoKtheReaper.com/ RoK the Reaper

You’re pretty damn stupid. Go look up Direct X12 Xbox One.

    • Danilo Viana

Yes because all ps4 games are in 1080p. It’s not like Sony lied about Killzone’s resolution or anything.

      • disqus_icUCvMAJ5v

I’d cry if Killzone was the exclusive shooter I was stuck with.

        • http://soundcloud.com/ViRUSfromMARS Jaffa Cake King

Killzone Shadowfall is a beautiful looking game but i got bored with it after a few hours.

    • roozbeh, again

BF4 is 900p on PS4, so you would still be wrong.

Honestly, I doubt these consoles will last ten years. More like 5.

    • Ken D

You’re a douche. Go back to the PS forums.

    • slasaru

Does any ps4 AAA exclusives run 1080p at 60fps? None yet, lol ))

  • http://soundcloud.com/ViRUSfromMARS Jaffa Cake King

It would be nice if we could have:

    1. The option to put our pinned items in alphabetical order.

    2. Achievements in a list not in huge slap me round the face side scrolling boxes.

    3. The ability to see what Xbox One achievements we have unlocked from the 360 dashboard.

    4. Unlimited external HDD storage for both the 360 and the Xbox One.

    5. Permanent cheaper digital pricing.

    6. Family and friends sharing for purchased digital content.

    • disqus_icUCvMAJ5v

      Those would all be great!

      • I Keel Zohmbeez

Shared content not on the console will never be. Why would they allow something that would cost them money in the long run?

  • MarcusFenix

    Major,

It’s good to see these updates, and it’s being reported that there are others (like external hard drive items) coming down the pike.

I’ve been pretty happy with my system, the game selections, the Kinect, all of it.

My only real complaint, past small cosmetic items on the home screen….is the DVR.

30 seconds is a REALLY short amount of time. For instance, lets say that you want to record a really brutal and well fought match in Killer Instinct, or even just the ridiculous Ultra you pulled off.

Recording too early misses the end of the sequence…recording too late cuts off the beginning of it.

I’m not someone who needs 15 minutes of DVR time. 2 minutes would suffice for most applications of the program.

Is this something that will be addressed later? I’ve not seen anything publicly stated about it, so I could be missing something.

    Thanks!

    • iShaun 95

Dude your issue is already resolved! If you snap Game DVR you can record up two 5 minutes of game play! You can hit record and have it go on for the full five minutes or even snap Game DVR to capture the last five minutes of game play! Your issue is already solved Bro and the ability to record up to 5 minutes has been there since the release of the Xbox One

      • MarcusFenix

I wasn’t aware. When I use the Upload app, it simply gives me the 30 seconds garbage.

Much appreciated for the heads up..it’s good to learn something new everyday. Thanks!

        • iShaun 95

          No problem dude!

  • disqus_icUCvMAJ5v

I really hope this update solves the issue with Xbox One. Voice chat still seems to be something that works sometimes and not others. I tried to start a party with a friend yesterday. I could hear him but he couldn’t hear me at all. This happens every time, I don’t have him on mute and he doesn’t have me on mute either! We reboot our systems and are able to get party chat working albeit with all the audio issue that came with that stupid chat adapter.

Every time I start a party it launches the game I have in the drive. Why? I wonder if this issue will be fixed.

Hopefully these issues have been successfully addressed in this current update, I can’t wait to find out.

So far I haven’t been too happy with Xbox One at all. If the chat issues get ironed out that may change.

    • Senses Failed

My theory would be this; the party app is only snappable (not fullscreen) and it’s loading your disc because that was probably your last activity (main/fullscreen).

  • http://soundcloud.com/ViRUSfromMARS Jaffa Cake King

I miss the 360 guide menu.

  • disqus_icUCvMAJ5v

How do I know when I have the update?

  • http://www.niknokseyer.com/ Niknok Seyer

    Hoing to get Blu-Ray 3D support ! :D

  • mullerlt

More intuitive access to Invites and Messages please. There has to be a better way to accept invites, the small amount of time you have when the pop up appears from someone inviting you is way too short. Half the time I miss the window to hit it because i’m off doing something, and then theres no message waiting for me telling me I have an invite? Also, it should not instruct to “Hold Xbox button” to accept the invite, its just a simple press, countless time I have ended up at the shut down screen or on the dashboard because i missed my “accept” window. Just some perplexing steps backwards from the 360. I just purchased a XB1 so I can’t even imagine what things were like before the last couple months series of updates. MS is is being quite good about listening to the communities wants and implementing them though. So kudos.

    • mullerlt

Perhaps a new version of the Quick Guide menu that was on the 360 like many have suggested is the answer.

  • Anubis316

Can you have a video walthrough of what this does, because I am lloking at my games right now and I have some new icons that I don’t know what they mean. For example a white triangle with a green dot on the top right corner of 3 of my games and a controller icon with a “+” on it on the top left of 3 games(only 1 game has both symbols). what do these mean? also does this update have the audio mixer thing so I can try to improve the quality of my stereo headset? if it does please tell me how to do that. thanks

  • Tuxx Wat

Please add the ability to playback media from a external hard drive/flash drive. That’s what I hear all my xboxone friends wanting the most. Well that and if you add the ability to play last gen (in your case xbox 360) games. Either (or both ) of those features would give you a ‘one up’ one PS4. Please focus on those upgrades.

  • Tuxx Wat

As far as voice commands when I ask for “xbox music” it pulls up the scan a code screen… that’s pretty odd

  • Anubis316

If you want to know what to do for future patches you need to look at the 360 and EVERYTHING that you decided to go backwards with you need to fix, how about auto sign in without the kinect having to see me for example. Also I have a small room, so improvement of kinect working in small areas would be cool, but not needed.
I would really like to be able to catagorize my friends more. Just like with the favorites tab, but let me create more and name them how I want, this would allow people to have a CLAN tab, maybe a local friends list(people they know outside of XBL), and whatever else people want. And to really make that feature awesome allow us to set different notifications for different list and restrict what some lists can see(like the clan friends can’t watch you broadcast). There is a lot of potential if you would just give us the simple ability to categorize our lists and really maximize on the ability to have 1000 friends.

Great updates. But we would like more apps also such as Pandora, HBO Go, Vikii, Tunein Radio. These are just a few of the apps that would be nice. In order to be an entertainment one stop shop, the Xbox One would have to be able to replace the Roku or Apple TV but it still lacks. The cable TV integration was poorly done. I prefer my Time Warner interface so I have unplugged it from the Xbox One. That needs work also.

These are just suggestions. I still love my Xbox One.

Why would you need to unplug it to use the Time Warner interface?

      • The Hungry Geek

I figured it out after reading your comments. Thanks :)

    • slasaru

This is because they think not only about the US and thus concentrate on global improvements. Xbox lacks influence in Europe greatly

    • Kvally

We use the Time Warner interface works like normal in the Xbox One, so not sure of your concern?

      • The Hungry Geek

I figured it out after reading your comments. Thank you so much. :)

          Anytime.

System improvements and fixes > more apps

Not to mention different development teams.

6:25pm UK and no update on either of my Xbox One’s.

  • llortretsam

lol, why are people praising MS for stuff that should had been there to begin with? XD

    • Kvally

I guess they should have hired you to build a new console, OS and UI from the ground up, with every feature in existence. What was Microsoft thinking, not putting you on payroll.

      • llortretsam

Yup, they would had been better off.

      • Monstrous Tard

You would have to be an idiot if you didn’t think that the development of the Xbox One wasn’t rushed, the console was built around DMR and was changed at the last minute, all while trying to get the console out before Sony did theirs. Even the name Xbox One was a rushed thought, guess no one there seen that it would be abbreviated as XBOne or thought that it may confuse some non gamers when buying the console. I’m not saying the consoles bad, but it was obviously rushed.

        • Kvally

You would have to be a monstrous tard if you didn’t think it takes a a long time to create a new console, a new OS, new apps, and new features. I guess the Xbox original and the Xbox 360 should have debuted with all those features and apps. Are people really that dense? LOL. Every console has been rushed, sadly.

          • Monstrous Tard

Other than the Xbox One most consoles have launched with most of the features of their previous generation counter parts. Lets not pretend like this is typical, your just making excuses.

          • llortretsam

Just ignore the idiot, he is obviously trolling… and he thinks the original Xbox had apps… I guess if a music player and Xbox live count as apps… lol

I told you to stop coming to my house and looking in my windows, you know i have restraining order against you!

Is there a reason the UI is so slow? I think naturally I’m comparing the time say, my phone takes to load my contacts and the time my Xbox does. Why would the Xbox take 30+ seconds (first time of the day) to load whereas my phone takes less than a second? I don’t mean to sound ignorant. I really don’t understand why it’s like this.

    • slasaru

Phone checks through text message database only, and Xbox checks also online status, games played, etc. details. Remember how trophy list was displayed at ps3

      • Faisal Munayam

the xbox 360 loads the recent players/messages/profiles MUCH faster, almost instant AND on top of current game/app. the xbone UI is just poorly developed face it.

    • Kvally

Could be your internet connection. I haven’t had those issues on my Xbox One.

    • Faisal Munayam

because the UI on the xbone isn’t optimised enough for the average multi tasker, sure snap apps are pretty good, but they need to tweak the performance the people/messaging app to run on top of current session like the 360… it’s just poor development basically.
