E3 2014 Binaural Audio Experiment

Pop the headphones on and listen to this special Binaural audio visit the the E3 Show Floor

Update: I’ve seen a lot of questions about how I captured this audio. Here is the equipment list:

Recorder: Zoom H1
Microphones: In-Ear Binaural Mics

Yup..pretty simple. I  record as WAV and upload to Soundcloud as a WAV. You want to avoid compression as much as possible to ensure maximum Binaural effect.

E3, Gaming By Larry Hryb, Xbox LIVE's Major Nelson

It’s from the future, way out in 2104!

  • David Edwards

This was interesting. Now just some Oculus Rift video and we’ll get the whole experience.

  • Holesome

The audio is very clear. Cool hearing all the other chatter and background sounds.

  • Kevin Olson

    Wow, that is amazing!!!

  • ilovegoogleglass

    Pretty cool!

  • ilovegoogleglass

    It’s pretty loud in there…

This is so cool, Major. Thank you for doing it. I’ve lived and breathed gaming my whole life (Xbox only since 2003 though) and this is the closest I’ve ever felt to E3. I’m at work (overnight shift) and put my headphones in and put my head down into my arms and I felt like I could see what you were describing. I kinda feel like I had the honor of meeting CheapyD and Geoff now too.

I loved when you would describe to people what you were doing and then finally someone was like, “This is creepy.” LOL

The Halo Master Chief Collection is my Game of Show, of course. What 343 Industries has created there with my favorite games of all-time is something that literally had me choked up as it was announced and I realized the dream-come-true-style rumors were actually real.

    • VGamer

I wasn’t just choked up, I was punching myself in the face to prove it wasn’t a dream, Halo 2 is my favorite piece of entertainment ever, of all time (#RedvsBlue). But seriously, I would have payed $60 JUST for the original multiplayer OR campaign of that game remade, I love the f*** out of it.

Where does one get some microphones like this? Would be great for reviewing interviews…

I added the gear list to this post.

    • VGamer

Probably from Microsoft testing labs :)

  • Swat

    Sounds fake

  • Death Dealer

    Just like GamesCom, it’s LOUD.
Great way to convey it to us here on the internet though. Kudos!

  • D S

Impressive audio separation. With headphones on if literally sounds like i’m there. Pretty awesome Major.

  • Please Clarify

Nice to get to hear experiments like this. That indeed did feel a lot like being there.

  • EighteenCharacters

That was excellent, Major! Can you tell us more about the tech you used to record this?

    • http://www.majornelson.com Major Nelson

I edited the post above and added links to the equipment list.

      • EighteenCharacters

        Awesome. Thanks!!

  • Ulisses Cavalcante

Hey Major show a pic whith mics rsrs

  • DHX

Overall this was pretty cool! However, this would have been so much better if you had a Lumia 1020 attached to your forehead recording synced POV video as well! Maybe next time. I’d also like to know what equipment you were using. Cheers!

  • Yusuf Seedat

Record an episode of the podcast with this.

  • John V.

really really cool thanks Major! Hey, do an AMA on r/xboxone!

  • Francis Harvey

Very interesting, thanks for sharing this. It’s especially impressive how the microphones don’t get overwhelmed by ambient noise; you can still clearly hear conversations you’re in and nearby conversations. I guess your ears helped focus the sound. Maybe this experiment would be something to share with the Project Fortaleza group, although I am slightly discomfited that without your warning no one would have known they were being recorded.

    • VGamer

No one knows it when its a wire either.
