Just bought today Risen 2: Dark Waters. I’ve heard its quite mediocre, but for 7€… I think it’s worth it. Is Risen 1 worth it too?

    • Some guy

Well, consider that you have to buy everything(skill like kicking, blocking that only work against humans so you’ll get murdered by everything else, crouching and others) and that there is no sense of progression + side quests are lame and the gameplay is clunky.
Of course nothing stops you from enjoying it.

      • Cagateybaila

Yup, I’ve already read all of that. The leveling is quite bad, but still I think i will enjoy it. I think it is interesting to “learn” your skills through characters instead of “magically” adcquire them, all by yourself on the top of a mountain after killing a goblin.

Thanks for the issues you pointed out, though.

        • Some guy

There’s still some RPG stuff where you magically get stronger by putting points after level up.
Good luck for getting the gold required for the stuff that cost gold though, enemies don’t respawn.

          • Matthew Bunton

There is plenty of gold in the game and enemies are replenished in areas of the game at specific times such as when a new Act starts.

I pretty much disagree with most of that. There is a very good sense of progression as you learn new skills more options of gameplay open up to you.

For example dialogue choices based on intimidation or charm, mining for gold, digging for treasure chests, drinking and shooting mini games, blacksmithing, firearms crafting, alchemy voodoo and probably a few other I’ve forgotten to mention.

The side quests are far more interesting than most other RPG’s and often funny or clever.

Agreed the gameplay can be a little clunky at times and ther are a few bugs but remember that these games are made by a relatively small studio.

It’s a bargain at that price you will certainly enjoy it.

Risen 1 is actually a better game all round but suffers from very poor graphics on the 360. However it is still very enjoyable but if you have a decent PC play it on that instead.

I am really looking forward to this game. I enjoyed their earlier Gothic games and both previous Risen games.

Their games whilst a little buggy are excellent they build a far more interesting and living worlds than any other RPG. Yes they can be difficult to start but that’s part of the magic there is no hand holding and if you wander off the beaten track your likely to encounter very powerfull enemies but also nice rewards.

You need to plan your character build. Eventually you become very powerfull and are able to return to the tougher areas to explore further without fear of instant death. These games have a strong fan base but its a pity more players don’t give them a try they can be far more rewarding to play than even the Elder Scrolls games.

Hey, guys, how are graphics on xbox 360 version? The first one was outrageous, but the second one wasn’t that bad afterall, still seemed outdated, though. I’m curious about this one, because I love these games for their gameplay ;)

  • Liquidfx Xboxdude

this is one of those games you either hate or love right out of the gate. really the worst part of the second one was the fighting mechanics. sluggish but the concept was awesome. i hope they made this one decent.

  • Cagateybaila

Btw… no week’s sales this week?

Not a lot of love for this game, I see. XBLDB(dot)com shows Risen 1 and 2 for $5 each (gold member discount). I’ve read and watched a few reviews for Risen 1 and 2, but I wasn’t impressed. Maybe I’ll skip these super-cheap games because I have so many others to play. I still haven’t touched Kingdoms of Amalur and Arcania: Gothic 4. They were $5 not too long ago.

I spend $5 here and there without too many regrets. My hard drive is full, so I delete stuff I’m not playing – just like everyone else. Now I’m forgetting what games I own!
