When Preview Program members start receiving the Xbox 360 system update next week, one of the changes is that unauthorized Memory Units will no longer work with the Xbox 360. If you’ve moved your profile or saved games onto one to “back it up,” you’d better move it back onto an authorized Xbox 360 storage device prior to taking the update. If you continue to use an unauthorized Memory Unit after the update, you will not be able to access your stored profile or saved games. If you need help identifying officially licensed Xbox 360 storage devices or accessories you can read more about the licensed accessories program on Xbox.com
Ooh dear, Datel and their customers aren't going to like that very much.
Maybe if Microsoft released larger storage options at prices that weren't completely ridiculous then customers may not seek alternatives.
All my stuff is from Microsoft so it's all fine with me.
There are unauthorized storage units? This is the first time I've heard about them...
Great news! Another great thing about this update. :)
This is a joke right? I swear the ebay listing said it was an legitimate "authorized" xbox360 storage device... apparently they're overstocked with them in Hong Kong which is why it was such a good price! ;P
Seriously though... drop the price point of the HD's. If I can buy a 1TB external drive for $100CDN, what makes MS think it's reasonable for us to shell out $150+ for 120GB.
Wow I bet the 3rd-party companies making 360 storage devices are really going to love this. So does this mean that none of the Datel memory cards are going to work any more?
haha I just read the post when Litheon brought it up and yes people make there own sata hard drives to work with the 360. Finally the big times modding people get a kick in the butt.... and EXU they are coming out with a 250GB HD for MW 2 and Forza 3 console and you know people will sell the hard drives later on...
whoa! an easy way to boost 120Gb HDD sales
some of u people are noobs and 250 GB hard drive will be out sooner or later aka MW 2 CONSOLE for the time being
After the Preview Program finish, will be the next update with these "features" mandatory to all Xbox Live users?, even for owners of "authorized Xbox 360 storage devices" (like me and had to pay a very expensive 120GB HDD, which, by the way, for the price it costs should be over 360GB instead of 120GB) and don't care and don't plan to use Zune, Facebook and Twitter...?
huh.. Years ago I had purchased a few 3rd party mem cards for my PS1. They were junk. My personal experience has tought me to always buy 1st party peripherals. When I got my 360 4 years back, I was happy to see Microsoft wasn't licensing to everyone for cheap made stuff. My naiveness assumed that was that. I had no clue there were unauthorized mem cards on the market. If its not offically licensed, you can't expect it to work the way the xbox needs it to. Should be no reason for complaints on this one. Even so, this shows very good show of face on Major Nelsons part by allowing these consumers a chance to get a proper MU. Good Job Larry! I'd like to add. I have had a 512 MU since Microsoft released them and it has not once ever failed me.
I only have legit memory cards/hard drives, but I'm going to have to say that your ridiculous price points don't help you here at all.
30 GBP for a 512MB memory card or 90 GBP for a 120GB hard drive?
@xX4C1DxR41NXx You must have missed the part where I said "reasonable prices", which the authorised storage devices DO NOT HAVE.
M$ you are about to make another a very very bad move...
@AngelAzrael1977 Yes. Some of those can be disabled, but how is unknown at this time.
Time for MS to play some whack-a-mole. I get that they need to protect LIVE users from modders, but it's pretty crappy for the people that just wanted more storage at a price not beyond insane.
For those touting the 250GB MS drive, even if they release it (which they say they aren't) what makes you think the price tag will be anywhere near reasonable?
@AngelAzrael1977 Of course it will be a mandatory update, just like every other dashboard update ever released for the 360.
What about people pirating games?
Just ban hammer?
Can't wait. I've signed up for the Twitter and Facebook preview program. About 2 days ago. Waiting for start! Great news about the MU Unit.. Would stop alot of them people cheating gamerscore, etc. Wouldn't harm me. I'm using my HDD! Now I can actually move up on MGC. Microsoft, once you do this update make sure you reset them cheaters again. There back... Not fare for people who gain them gamerscore points instead of cheating.
So my 2gb datel memory card will stop working? great.
And to everyone complaining about this, I would think it's likely an issue with people modding more then anything if they have easy access to the data on the drive, which they likely do with a third party device but not with Microsoft licensed devices.
My HDD and MU are legit but Microsoft is making it pretty easy to jumpship and go with Sony. You can use any Hard drive and usb drive you want. Lower your crazy HDD prices!
Just2Lazzzy but this update is not going to stop them from taking screws apart of the official hard drives and hook it up to a computer.
Maybe if Microsoft sold hard drives for the 360 at a sensible and rational price, people wouldn't feel the need to use modded or unlicensed ones in the first place. I certainly hope this isn't going to render 3rd-party memory units built specifically for the 360 like this one useless: http://bit.ly/1d8KFi
Well I guess there's one good thing to come out of all this: at least now we know that the upcoming update is going to have other system updates besides just Twitter, Facebook, last.fm and Zune Marketplace. So what else can we expect to be included, or should I say "removed"?
