Hi Major, lots of people complaining without offering solutions, so let me try:

    - DRM: Internet check-in every 24 hours for INSTALLED games only, if you don’t install the game, it’s a one-time requirement when your profile first boots the game disc (it would only continue to check if there was a connection, and without one, that disc is locked to that account).

    - Privacy: Allow us to unplug the Kinect! For games that require it, a prompt to plug it back in like an unplugged controller prompt.

    - Buy to Own: A firm statement on what we can expect when this console becomes legacy. A commitment to people, prior to purchase, that their purchases are not done time-delimited; that children of today will be able to revisit the games from their childhood by digging the Xbone out of the attic. Either that, or a right proper explanation as to why we should pay $60 for a rental and a thorough explanation of what you’re allowing publishers to do and not do in regards to abandoning their games.

I will buy this console because I work in this industry time to time, but I will buy my cross-console games for PlayStation next generation *if* it’s a less restrictive platform. It’s that simple. If I can not buy games to own on either console I will not buy games for either console. I will buy them for a PC I do not yet own instead.

Wish you and the team all the best sorting out these difficult policy decisions.

    • BostonSup

Nicely said. I think that it isn’t so much about protecting the console and the publishers (even though that is what they try to make it look like), but rather it is about money and saturation of their other products.

      • opaquely transparent

For years many Blu-ray players and Smart TVs have things built-in like Skype and widgets for a much lower cost. If Microsoft doesn’t focus on games with their game division they’re going to lose the next console war in epic fashion. It’s all about the games.

        • BostonSup

They are not going into gaming, that was just their foot in the door. What MS really wants is to be the central point of the living room. They want to be the cable box, the movie player (Blu-Ray, DVD, streaming, digital rent or buy), the twitter/facebook/internet, the skype, everything. MS doesn’t want to be the gaming console, it wants to be the jack of all trades and have everything connected and filtered out by them. You are right that it will be an epic fail and I think they will be cleaning house of the upper management and heads in the not so distant future.

Windows 8 and Xbox One/Kinect are failures because it is their visions forced onto consumers (New PCs had to give away a downgrade option… Businesses won’t use Windows 8, all because MS won’t allow for desktop only modes). Almost a “suck it up and be happy with what we give you” attitude. Windows phones are not doing well, and the same can be said about the MS Surface. MS will have to clean house, I haven’t seen a crash and burn approach like this in a very very long time.

          • Baron van Dedem

Microsoft isn’t what it used to be. Windows 8 is bad, Windows 8 Phones don’t sell, Surface don’t sell. And now the whole gaming community is mad a them. This could be the savior of Sony, they can really have this in financial difficult times.

          • Kieran Tsao

this all happened AFTER Gates left… I wonder if he had the same effect as Jobs did to Apple – cohesively making the company work as a whole. Since these two legends went – MS and Apple just aren’t the same.

          • Baron van Dedem

I Think there a to many business people in the company’s. Gates and Jobs were true rebels the people no at the top are just university guys, with no connection with their product.

          • Nick Peck

Win 8 has sold a ton of copies and is a very fast, solid os. There will be a desktop mode in the next update. Kinect was a separate purchase so you didn’t have to buy it, but sold extremely well. The surface is so much better than android and icrap its not even funny, but is still new to the market and is selling very well.

Sony just dumped half of its assets to not go belly up, show how good Sony is running a business while Ms has billions to throw around safely if they want so I wouldn’t worry. They are dropping billions on games for the new system just to start and will have a very steady stream for the first several years.

I prefer all in one boxes and always have. I have no issues with having a ton of options even if I don’t use them all. They are headed in the right direction as most people use their game systems for media and games more and more. Think the ps4 is going to be void of media apps? Not. How about Sony run movies and music? It will all be there, just like DRM.

  • Jorge Garza

Does anyone else find State of Decay’s menus and subs hard to read? I mean, they are not too small, but the font type is so annoying for me.

    • http://videogamersblog.com/ Bryan Stilbon Conrad

Yeah after about 2 hours of trying to figure out the menu, learn to rested and what button or random thing I have to do to switch to another character. I just gave up and took a break.

Great game for $20 bucks no pun intended :D

    • Timothy Hames

Its funny I was playing on a old TV and it was hard to see. I switched to a 39″ 1080p and I have no problems.

  • Colorfulchew

My only concern now for the Xbox One is whether I will be able to play games that are released on both 360 and the One, between the two platforms. I know PS4 cross-play is highly unlikely but atleast the 360 and one :D

    • TheDestinyUprising Gamez

There will be no backwards compatibility on the Xbox One, So Xbox 360 games will not play on the X1, This is because of a different architecture, The Xbox 360 was a PowerPC while the Xbox One will be a X86 processor, meaning that emulating the PPC will be hard on the Xbox One, The PS4 isn’t backwards compatible but does have a new service called Gaikai which will allow steaming of previous generation playstation consoles to the PS4

      • Colorfulchew

I’m well aware that the one will not play 360 games, my question is whether the multiplayer of games released on the One and the 360 such as destiny, will be able to play multiplayer with each other.

      • Does Not Equal

That’s not the question he was asking.

        • TheDestinyUprising Gamez

          Oh Sorry :)

        • xboxoneforlife

I’m not sure but because they are built on different archtitecture unless the servers are going to be able to code the different games. I can’t see how you could play 2 different coded games.

      • Senses Failed

MS might have a solution, i guess we’ll see.. Monday

  • StaceyJK

Very well written; considered and eloquent. I’m okay with the announcements but I can understand why some of the issues around pre-owned games are causing concern.

More commentary of this quality, please.

  • http://videogamersblog.com/ Bryan Stilbon Conrad

Well said and better than anything I have or could have ever posted here or any where online for that matter. Let’s hope that if for nothing else Major Nelson will read this and pass it along to the executives at Microsoft.

No matter what any of us have said either disrespectful or respectfully we do care and have a passion for Xbox. It is not having the freedom of choice that is guiding us.

  • Kieran Tsao

Will the new xbox even be legal to sell in Europe? We have the strictest consumer law in the world, and not being able to play games if you don’t check in every 24 hours falls foul of the description laws – you would expect a games console to play games!!!

    • xboxoneforlife

Can you play steam in europe?

      • GmailIsDown

Exactly. The only difference is that the check in time is longer for Steam offline mode.

        • Dylan

Steam will now be forced by law to allow the selling of used digital goods in the EU or be shut down

          • GmailIsDown

not sure what your point is. they do sell disc-based PC games that require Steam for activation.

          • Dylan

Hit that refresh button, edited my comment to make my whole
            “I don’t get the Steam=Xbox” argument

          • GmailIsDown

because both require periodic online check-ins?

          • Dylan

One deals in the mostly physical and one purely only digital.
If Microsoft went pure digital with the console that comparison would be justified in my opinion.

          • GmailIsDown

I think that’s just a formality. Everything is essentially digital on Xbox One. Discs are just installation media and nothing else, the same way the discs work for games that have Steam DRM.

Microsoft just offers the extra option to trade in your games back.

      • Kevin Giguere

Yes, but Steam is also being sued in Germany for not enabling resale of games.

        that’s what EA thinks.

EA: Hey look, dumb PC users now are willing to take whatever c**ppy DRM we threw at them, Battlefield 3, Diablo 3, SimCity. Relax. Console users will eventually give up their little pathetic struggle and put on the ankle bracelets as well. Besides we already dropped the season pass and we will need another way to compensate our loss.
Microsoft: So if I say no you will skip Xbox One completely?
EA: You want your next console to be like Wii U?
    Microsoft: …

10+yrs for me on live :(

  • Jiffer

ive had mine since day one

  • mightywombat

You might be jumping the shark on PS4, you might want to wait 3 more days to see what they are doing ;-)

  • PSN_IS_GARBAGE

Not faulting you really, it was a nice post but I have to bring this up.. You’re saying MS helped shaped your life more than any other corporation? Really? I’m so pissed.. after E3 I’m thinking of selling my windows phone for an android, getting rid of my windows 8 pc (takes too long to learn this horrible OS) and buying a Mac. Their greed knows no bounds and I’m sick of it.

  • John

Good show Major, State of Decay rocks!

I’m with the rest here, the 24 and 1 hour check-in needs to be way more lenient if I want to consider the Xbox One, if you can do that and go down with your deal prices fast you might be better than Steam if you do it right.

Steam needs about 3 weeks on the PC for verification, so try and make it 21 days on your primary console (or with a disc check option if there is no internet for longer periods like for the armed forces) and like 24 hours on the secondary and subsequent consoles.

    • boe2

See, this guy gets it. Constructive criticism tends to be better received than blind hate and hashtags.

    • ikari_paul

agree. if they want to go that way, the prices have to come down

  • usrev

despite all the xbone hate right now, state of decay is pretty fun, glad I bought it so far.

    • http://soundcloud.com/ViRUSfromMARS Jaffa Cake King

I agree, the only thing I don’t like is that the game carries on when your not playing it. Loaded it up yesterday and one of my group had died! If this is what persistent online worlds is going to bring us then no thanks i don’t want that. I don’t want to be in the middle of the Supermarket and think “Sh*t I’ve forget to take my character to the bathroom”. Don’t want to come home to that, all his AI comrades have left him because he can’t hold his bladder.

How did i manage to turn that into an Xbone complaint?

  • TheDahaka

    #XboxOneDOADayOne LOL

  • JoeGrahamcracker

That sucks man! I’m extra cautious with her because she’s hot LOL

  • FoxHound R – Xbox One Day One

I played a bit of State of Decay and… it’s freaking awesome. Seriously, for an xbla game it rocked my socks off. It makes me wonder what would have happened if those guys had access to a AAA budget. Seriously Microsoft make use of them for an XBOX ONE zombie game.

    • jlh

I really believe that with 250K sold in two days that MS have to back them on their State of Decay MMO plans now and that game will definitely be on Xbox One. That is an insane amount of games sold on XBLA especially at the 1600 point price.

  • beardyman3218

What happened to “we must provide compelling answers to new questions”? Your being too vague MS and so is Sony you both need too come out with direct answers that don’t beat around the bush.

    • dibils

?? MS have, they pretty much showed their whole policy… wtf lol go read it

      • Dylan

Not really. Just brought more questions than answers. Here’s a breakdown if you want it

        http://www polygon com/2013/6/8/4407600/xbox-one-microsoft-policy-answers-raise-more-questions

        • GmailIsDown

          the rest are just details.
i do hope this 24 hour requirement varies by region, which means i’ll get an xbox one from one of the unrestricted regions and play imports for the next 10 years or so.

      • beardyman3218

they havent announced why the period of offline play is so short, they havent announced if the price of live remains the same and sony hasnt announced anything but the controller, they have told us the restrictions but not why they are in place and how it benefits us as a consumer. MS have announced more than sony has but their answers leave more questions as too why these policies are in place.

      • ikari_paul

there are still some unanswered question, like Live Gold, game prices, if friends can pose as “family” and share their game library with us… hope they reveal everything at e3

  • ElektroDragon

Ok, so let’s talk about State of Decay. Why do you people like a game that:

    1) Has horribly ugly graphics
    2) Has terrible animation
    3) Has poor shadow effects
    4) Has a jerky sometimes stuttering frame rate
    5) Is part of the yet another zombie game fad
    6) Swears gratuitously in its first 5 seconds
    7) Is overpriced
    8) Is being used to test and fund yet another mediocre MMO
    9) Is supposedly “open world” but its game over if you leave the “mission area”.
    10) Whose bodies of water are all ONE INCH DEEP.
    11) Has shimmering textures.

I must be the only person on the Internet who thinks State of Decay is garbage, which is a shame. I swear, it feels like they could release any trash game and as long as it had zombies in it you guys would lap it up and ask for more.

    • Kal-El-001

its not about the graphics just ask Walking Dead

      • ElektroDragon

I have a Platinum in Walking Dead. It has better graphics. And Dead Island is a better game too. And cheaper now.

        • Shenmue

Are you seriously trying to stop people from purchasing this game? If so…why? Now I’m curious I’m going to go and give the demo a good play through.

          • ElektroDragon

Yeah as if you hadn’t already. Buy what you want, it was just a public service announcement to help people otherwise blinded by “OMFG it has zombiezzz!!!!$%%!!”

    • dibils

weird am i the only one that thinks it looks great graphically lol (i only played the trial FYI)

    • jammin500

It’s over priced as are all arcade games, but I like it, I like the game play and the concept of the game, I like the mix in styles and I enjoy the simplicity of it. But agree its over priced and graphically challenged.

    • https://live.xbox.com/MyXbox/Profile?gamertag=DarkGin87 Lee Rayson (DarkGin87)

Because it the first fresh Zombie game since the walking dead episode game.
the rest feel done over and over

    • boe2

Every time I visit this blog, I see 2 residents here: You being extremely negative, beyond reason. And FoxHound being extremely positive, beyond reason.

You guys are like Ying and Yang. Fascinating really.

    • Volitar Prime

But dispite everything you said about it the game is very fun to play. That is something that can’t be said about many games with better looking graphics and animation.

      • ElektroDragon

I never said anything about the gameplay. It could be good gameplay, but I can’t even evaluate it because of the issues above.

    • EighteenCharacters

Cell phones record video and audio, and are constantly connected. Plus, they can be tracked via GPS.

Makes the tinfoil hat pop right off your head, doesn’t it…

      • Daniel Lawson

don’t let them know that even if they turn it off it still does those things… you gotta remove the battery completely… to bad for you iPhone users

    • Shenmue

I have never seen the gaming community act so incredibly stupid.

      • EighteenCharacters

        I couldn’t agree more.

      • Nick Peck

Most of the gaming community consists of two people and it’s obvious which one prevails (think along the lines of younger, more stupid and spoiled…). It’s very sad and annoying and I can’t wait to laugh at all of the “going to ps4″ people / comments.

        • ikari_paul

the ones defending MS’s policy really dont appear to be more mature than the ones trashing it. The machine is going to sell, because a lot of people just want the FIFA/NFL & COD fix and dont care about anything else. But from the feedback i hear from my friends and on forums is that the machine is going to lose quite a bit of following, and itll sell much less than the PS4

heck, the PS3 just overtook last month the X360 in world sales. If MS lost this gen with such a great machine, then next gen they risk selling the same nr of machines as the original xbox.

          • Nick Peck

There is no winning, losing, there is NO WAR…. Why do people still think this way? They are competing products. Just think, if the 360 could sell better in japan, the #’s would demolish the ps3. So even with the 360 not selling in one major spot it still was on top all of this time.

Also, people are very stupid and don’t bother to wait or to learn anything before they jump on the hate bandwagon. Pretty much everything MS has announced policy wise will affect next to no one. Honestly, how many people take games over to their friends house anymore?

If I go over a buddies how I take my nice BenQ monitor with my system lol. Most games work like that today anyways, where you need the account owners GT or whatever on the other system for it to work. Very few work without it so honestly, what’s the big deal? How long has it been since PC gamers haven’t been able to trade in games? Exactly.

Not one “policy” here is going to affect anything that I do, I will play my games, watch my tv just like I have always done it, but with a much better device. We will find out here later today, but you guys will see that the ps4 will follow many of the same “rules” because they don’t have much choice. Publisher / content creators want more control over their products.

The ps4 isn’t doing anything better at all hardware wise. This gen is more about the software than anything as the dev’s have two beefy systems to work with. Although sonys background software is usually garbage so we will have to wait and see how easy they really made it for the devs this time around.

          • ikari_paul

i usually borrow games from mates. and for the past month, ive been unable to play bf1943, due to EA not caring to fix the servers. just because your ok with the restrictions, doesnt make them acceptable. its nothing but your opinion. dont be so delusional.

your giving up features, and not receiving anything in return. unless i hear m$ say that prices will go down to compensate the loss used games, i dont think that its the ONE is good deal. thats just my opinion. do whatever you want with your money, but dont patronize people. where you dont see a problem, i do.

    • GmailIsDown

you should destroy your smartphone first.

      • ikari_paul

i dont have one. many dont

  • Shenmue

They’re right. State of Decay is really good. The XBOX team needs to keep supporting games like this for XBOX LIVE.

    • Daniel Lawson

1000 percent agree… games like this should get extra backing from MS

      • ElektroDragon

        It already did. :P

  • disqus_vkwyaBuO48

i havent played the game yet but i have watched so many lets plays on YouTube with it. from what i have seen it looks like a solid XBLA game, sure there are issues with it but over all i think its a great start to something better down the road. it looks fun. i give the creators alot of credit and hope for AAA budget for undead labs on another project like this.

  • PSN_IS_GARBAGE

Haha, fair enough. You know when I got my first PC? When I turned 26 in 2000. This is also why I’ve never gotton into PC gaming either.. go figure. :)

  • boe2

People wanted clarification. It wasn’t clear anymore what is fact and what is rumour. Now it is, even if it is not what you wanted to hear.

    • Does Not Equal

That’s what I’ve been saying all along. People should have been able to move on. Instead, we got a revolving door of people coming here to defiantly proclaim they were switching allegiances to Sony (or Steam), and ending with some variant of “You Just Lost A Customer.” (In the history of commerce, no one who’s ever said that has not looked like a douche.)

You’re not gonna buy an Xbox One? You’re mad, you’re disappointed, you’re breaking up with Microsoft? That’s great. No one cares. Delete this link, erase it from your browser, and never look back. We don’t need to know the details.

      • Rishard Chapoteau

Perhaps if MS listens to enough people saying they don’t want this and arent’ going to buy their system they will listen and not make a costly mistake. Personally if the PS4 doesn’t have the same restrictions that the One has, I’ll buy the PS4 instead.

Consumers are upset with their anti consumer policy, and before they vote with their dollar they want to be heard. Maybe after hearing MS will change their mind. Its not too late for them to pull out of this.

      • ikari_paul

as long as the xbox loyalists dont complain about being trashed at retail, im ok with what you said. The ps3 just overtook the x360 in world sales last month, so its not s stretch to see the ONE sell less than PS4. but lets wait for e3

        • Does Not Equal

There’s coming here to say you’re unhappy, and there’s coming here to boldly tell everyone reading that you’re switching to Sony/Steam and slamming the door on your way out. Plus there’s a large number of people who post cutesy pictures or make multiple insult comments.

Whining and insulting makes people look like children. Being civil and rational gets results.

    • ikari_paul

what about game prices. will they stay the same? now thats something id like to see clarified. shouldnt they come down, now that piracy has been defeated and used games are a distant memory? i think its only fair, imo

what about Live Gold? will it stay the same, now that PSN has caught up?

what about game sharing? can i and a buch of friends just call ourselves “family members” and share the games we have on our accounts?

hope they clarify all this today at e3

  • Daniel Lawson

You can’t attach a price to fun… it’s easily worth the 20 USD

    • Nick Peck

Yup, I started over and man it’s crazy how things are totally different this time around. I can’t fine ANY building scraps at all, and food is impossible to find. My first game I had plenty of both…. Very fun game so far.

      • Jsin

so many tense moments too. no stamina hurt horde on your tail and you see a cars in the distance…

        • Nick Peck

Yup :D Can’t wait to get home and fire it up. The only thing I don’t like is that you can’t adjust the speed of the aiming> It’s wayyyy to slow for me lol.

  • ikari_paul

is State of Decay like DayZ of some sorts?

    • Dennis Crosby

some what but its more of its own kind of game. ive been playing it nonstop and like the devs said everything in that game is random

  • beardyman3218

watching e3 and loving it, for gold members 2 free full retail games every month on 360 aswell and free to play games such as world of tanks which is a 360 console exclusive.

    • John

Yeah and these won’t be rentals like on PSN+, these will be full purchased licenses.

      • macd82

yes very good Microsoft im sure lots of people will now rush out and buy a xbox one all is forgiven its not like we pay a fee for live

        • Pending Demise

especially seeing as they wont carry over cause of backwards comparability giving me a bigger reason to stick with my 360

    • mgsrocks1

Except Microsoft is only offering the ” free 2 games per month” deal for 6 months till Xbox One launch….

Like iv said before they cannot give brand new games away for free, there needs to be a back catalogue of games for this too work, when sony announced drive club it wasnt the actual drive club game it was a ps+ edition which will be like gran turismo prologue.

xbox one over priced and restrictive and looks like an old vhs player, ps4 is the SAME as the xbox one

    • Dennis Crosby

the ps4 is just a slanted verison of the xbox one

      • Wastedemu

that’s because it is made by an Asian company

If the response to Sony’s E3 show are any indication, there is a very strong positive emotion towards PS4. It’d be very interesting to see how MS handles this.

Gamers are a very brutal, demanding and stubborn audience. If the sales of Win 8 are any indication, you cannot force your choices upon your users. If you make similar mistakes here, this could turn out to be a major disaster.

Please come to your senses and fix the very obvious blunders first, otherwise superficial broadband oriented features won’t save XB One. There is a very serious gaming market outside of US, DO NOT forget them.

to be honest i thought the Sony E3 show was boring. non of there exclusives appealed to me .

      • sebastianboehm

None of the Exclusives was exiting for me, not on the PS4, neither on the XBOX ONE. The games that impressed me are all multi platform and i am quite happy about this so i can concentrate on chossing the system that offers me as a customer the best package and this is ps4 in price, used games and not including any camera!

Let’s see how Microsoft will react!

  • BillGatesAuntie

It says State of Decay at the top.
Is this a reference to, or about your customer base/business model now?
It’s got to be in a permanent state of decay now.

How to UNFU(K the XBOX ONE

    1. Make KINECT optional, not an essential Part of the System. There are many Gamers who dont like Aerobic so they will not pay for it. Sell an XBOX ONE without Motion Controller for 399.- EURO/$. Sony is NOT INCLUDING any Camera in the PS4 Box! So no need to fear of motion control game elements in core games!

    2. Make a clear Decisision how to display games regarding Motion Control. It is extremely important that it is clear at first look if a game can be played completely without Aerobics or not!

    3. Change the DRM System for Games on Disk. Make them be playable offline, without 24h internet Access required. We want to use Games outside of internet connected areas, we want to lend games to our frinds even those who are not 30 days in our list and i want to buy a used game and sell it again. everywhere. from a friend and to a neighbour for example.

I really would like to stay with XBOX because i love my 360 but if this issues will not be fixed i will move on to the next system. I would prefere to collect achievments instead of trophies, but to be honest, i will not accept the many disadvantages of xbox one.

Do you really want to loose the console race next generation already half a year before the first systems are sold? What is going on with microsoft company, why dont you listen to your customers. i am not a sony fanboi! i own more than 60 xbox 360 games. Microsoft should start to listen and understand what the customers want.

look at windows 8, we dont want to use tiles at all, so a start button is only a placebo solution in windows 8.1! Give us back the start menu and give us apps running in normal standard windows. listen to your customers or learn it the hard way.

On the console market, you have a competitor, if you dont listen to your customers and do what they want they will buy somewhere else. we are the customers, we are the kings! never forget this!
