  • NBA Kirkland

Will the achievement popped sound be different from other notifications on Xbox One?

    • DarkMaturus

Dynamic achievements is the actual news. That’s awesome stuff right there

      • Not_A_PC_Gamer

No it’s not, they are a nightmare for us completionist and are also part of the reason I am switching to PS4. I’m not playing MS’s games anymore.

        • Nick Peck

          Lol, ok, Bye then.

          • Not_A_PC_Gamer

I’m still going to stick around here just to amuse myself.. :) I’m sick of all this smartglass, kinect, dynamic cheeve, and hiding apps behind the gold paywall bs. MS is just very anti consumer all around.

          • Lucas Sanches Cestari

            Lol, ok, Bye then.²

          • Nick Peck

            haha :O)

          • Not_A_PC_Gamer

            ok by then 3

          • Morris ヅ

            bore off already

      • Jason Voorhees

I know right, but this is actually very smart as it will at least put the break on selling games for completionists as they will have to come back to the games they thought they completed. No more easy 1000 games.

        • Not_A_PC_Gamer

It’s actually very stupid but I would expect morons such as yourself to bend over for MS on more than one occasion. ANYONE who thinks that’s a bright idea has the IQ and personality of a roof shingle. You blind MS supporters…. lol.

          • roozbeh

Okay dont you think it puts possible more replay value?

          • Not_A_PC_Gamer

No I don’t I think it adds nonsense to the game just to keep us playing longer as if acheivements and trophies didn’t take long enough to complete the way they are now.

This reminds me exactly what Epic does and I can’t stand it. I didn’t bother finishing Gears 3 because of Seriously 3.0 and because of that, I didn’t want to touch Judgement with a 10 foot pole.

Just my personal opinion but MS keeps making bad decisions one right after the other..

          • roozbeh

okay i will accept your opinion but come on. microsoft i agree blew it big time back at the reveal and at e3. but now they are making better decisions. indie policies, region locking, drm policies.
i can get your upset but to say you wont use a microsoft product anymore is an exaggeration dont you think?

        • Not_A_PC_Gamer

You have got to be the most inept individual on here if you can’t see everything that is wrong with that. This is just ANOTHER PRIME EXAMPLE OF MS PUSHING WHATEVER THEY WANT ON TO YOU and you fools take it bent over. Sorry you can have your controlling achievements. I wont be hassled with it.

  • Morris ヅ

finally the podcast is back iv missed it Major..

  • Morris ヅ

and for the sounds i think we should have a choice out of a certain amount of sounds

    • Quanicus

The achievement sound should stay the same, change the sound when a friend logs on. I

      • Morris ヅ

yh but we should be able to choice what sounds out of a bunch like mobiles tbh

  • Dennis Crosby

hey do anyone know if i will be able to purchase Payday 2 from xbox live

    • Jason Voorhees

If? Yes, at some point. Payday 2 is a retail game, so I guess your question is “When?” The answer is we don’t know yet as MS hasn’t announced day and date digital releases for the Xbox 360 yet.

  • DarnedNut

    cant wait for x1!

  • Lezlow

Major, my RSS is not recieving this podcast for some reason. Lucky I saw it on Twitter though.

  • Jason Voorhees

Friendly word of advice, NEVER put your email address in public locations on the internet.

  • roozbeh

i love that assassins creed 2 soundtrack in the beginning

    • Barry Brennan

I only realized that from playing it last week ha.

  • Guest

Breaking on Eurogamer, the PS4 has some very poor memory management. Only 5GB will be available to games on it as well. 4.5GB is only guaranteed with about 512MB of flexible memory. The other 3GB are used by the sharing features of the OS, like the DVR. Just pathetic!

    • Death Dealer

Considering the Xbox One runs an entire other OS and apps for multitasking, it truly is. But like others have been saying here before, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Xbox One was a bit more flexible with these memory requirements in the long run.

      • roozbeh

that b@stard said his game needed 5 gigs of ram just to work.
who believes a word that comes out of his mouth? honestly?

      • xjumper

Xbones Memory setup is basicly the same. 3GB for the OS and 5GB for games. Nothing really wrong with that. Xbone has DVR too is that not pathetic? lol /fanboys

        • Jason Voorhees

XBOX ONE has a DVR too, correct.
However Xbox One does not take such a wide overhead for features. The Xbox One runs 2 operating systems with another hypervisor for extensive multitasking. At least we know with the Xbox One where that memory gap is being put in use.
With the PS4 you are now basically buying 3.5 GBs of expensive GDDR5 memory and not knowing what it is for.

          • roozbeh

Sony have a reputation of not being that good in coding. XMB anyone?

          • Volitar Prime

I’m pretty sure that the XBOne doesn’t have a DVR. It doesn’t even have a tunner, just an HDMI input.

          • roozbeh

Ah actually it does. 5 minutes of gameplay on its own. Plus you can command the kinect to record. For 30 seconds.
Also I would like to say its been proven that the ps4 is hdmi only. Sony confirmed it. There was an accident in naming the inputs it seems

          • xjumper

there is something called future. Preparing for future OS features is not bad and a really good idea.
Sony can even reduce that footprint later in the cycle.

      • JayD

Of course his game is coming to Xbox One. Sony just brought a timed exclusive. Go look it up on Wikipedia. In regards to the memory situation: it looks like the Xbox One will have a faster memory system than the PS4 as well.

    • xjumper

      So the same as Xbone?
Wow and why exactly is that poor memory management?
      But still 5GB GDDR5 >> 5GB DDR3

      • Jason Voorhees

That depends if GDDR5 will still be better. We know that DDR3 is better for smaller chunks of data with lower latency and combined with the eSRAM and data movers actually allows for significantly greater bandwith than the PS4’s implementation. I think we will need a benchmark suite to actually prove it all, but until then the notion of the PS4’s implementation being better is kind of hogwash.

        • xjumper

no it wont allow for better bandwidth. People need to stop believing in Microsoft PR and “good” fanboy rumors…

          • roozbeh

Digital foundry disagrees with you. If anything people need to stop listening to playstation fanboys like you. You guys spread the assumptions that your beloved console has 7 gigs of ram

          • Jason Voorhees

So you’re saying we should trust all you PS fanboys without any technical knowledge out there over Digital Foundry…? Bye!

          • Not_A_PC_Gamer

Some of us PS fanboys will own both you know..

      • roozbeh

Why is it that every one forget that chunk of esram in there?

        • xjumper

because that ESRAM wont boost more performance out of the memory. ESRAM is more like a little Cache for the GPU. And that peak rumor about 192GB/s is bullshit. So nothing to see here.

          • JayD

Digital Foundry confirmed it and their source was developers. So no it isn’t a rumor at all.

          • roozbeh

Here we have specimen known as ps fanboy. Watch as he pronounces everything against his beloved console bs.
Lol man. Stop raging. As if specs even mattar

          • Landsharkk

I’m a big supporter of Xbox, but that 192GB/s was in fact a ‘theoretical’ speed, not actual. So for those downvoting roozbeh, let’s try and be realistic instead of theoretical.

ESRAM basically allows the GPU to stay closer to 100% utilized on a more constant basis. Rather than wait for the CPU, the GPU can instead use the ESRAM as an off-chip cache.

So the CPU can fill ESRAM cache while the GPU is busy, allowing both CPU and GPU to run more efficiently.

          • roozbeh

its real world bandwidth is around 133 GB/s if memory serves

          • Death Dealer

Indeed, but all the RAM can be addressed in parallel, so you can add the bandwith of the eSRAM and DDR3 together. With the 4 Move engines the bandwith becomes even highger.

      • JayD

Except with the ESRAM the Xbox memory system has now been revealed to run at 192GB/s vs the PS4’s 176GB/s.

        • JayD

Since ur comment is awaiting moderation my reply is here. Digital Foundry confirmed it and their source was developers. It isn’t a rumor at all.

UPDATE #2: Sony has issued a statement:

We would like to clear up a misunderstanding regarding our “direct” and “flexible” memory systems. The article states that “flexible” memory is borrowed from the OS, and must be returned when requested – that’s not actually the case.

The actual true distinction is that:

“Direct Memory” is memory allocated under the traditional video game model, so the game controls all aspects of its allocation
“Flexible Memory” is memory managed by the PS4 OS on the game’s behalf, and allows games to use some very nice FreeBSD virtual memory functionality. However this memory is 100 per cent the game’s memory, and is never used by the OS, and as it is the game’s memory it should be easy for every developer to use it.
We have no comment to make on the amount of memory reserved by the system or what it is used for.

Based on this information, plus the new source coming forward to explain the properties of flexible memory, our take on this right now is that there is 4.5GB of conventional RAM available to developers, along with the OS-controlled flexible memory Sony describes, in addition to that.

We understand that this is a 1GB virtual address space, split into two areas – 512MB of on-chip RAM is used (the physical area) and another 512MB is “paged”, perhaps like a Windows swap file. But to be clear, of the 8GB of GDDR5 on PS4, our contention is that 5GB of it is available to developers.

The good news is that the amount is static and not dictated by OS functions as we stated in our original post, making it a lot easier for developers to work with.

          • Death Dealer

That’s a very sad situation for the PS4. People are now indeed buying 3GB GDDR5 for unexplained reasons, which is stupid.

    • Not_A_PC_Gamer

Don’t be a fanboy dude. The amount of ram dedicated to the OS and games will be roughly the same for both.

      • roozbeh

        this^.
their equal right now. it doesnt matter what anyone says as both will be awesome in many ways.
        as if specs even matter

  • ChintuPatel

the zune don’t have a update this podcasts

  • http://www.majornelson.com Major Nelson

If it was not showing up on iTunes, check again. I think I fixed it.

    • ChintuPatel

      it fix thank

    • HelloGorgeous

Hi Major. You’re a pretty funny guy and I’m really looking forward to the Xbox One. Good job; that’s all I wanted to say.

  • Landsharkk

ESRAM basically allows the GPU to stay closer to 100% utilized on a more constant basis.

A ‘normal/non-ESRAM’ situation would be the GPU asking for more calculations from the CPU, but having to wait for the CPU to finish it’s current task/thread before receiving the data.

With ESRAM, however, rather than having to wait for the CPU, the GPU can instead use the ESRAM as an off-chip cache.

So the CPU can fill ESRAM cache while the GPU is busy, allowing both CPU and GPU to run more efficiently.

  • Dennis Crosby

I wanted to say this before bed.Don’t buy a console because of the popularity its gaining.buy one for your preferences. If you spend most of your time playing online games Xbox 1 is for you. Microsoft had proven they the better online experience.but if your more of a single player person who enjoys a story driven game ps4 is for you. All of these specs mean nothing when it come to the consumer experience. Stick with your preferences and you all way make the right choice

    • Not_A_PC_Gamer

I do agree with this however.. XBL has always been ahead of PSN. I’ll always give MS their dues for that at least. I’ve been boosting Uncharted 2 online for the past few weeks and I can’t begin to tell you how much of a chore that is without party chat. Instead we use the text chatroom to communicate with both parties of 5 to boost.

But then again, MS has a far better OS and system software too. In the end though, I’m still not buying an xbox one. Maybe I can borrow one just to play that Quantum game and DR3.. I’ll see.

      • Not_A_PC_Gamer

So I praise MS for one thing and I still get downvoted? It’s you guys who are the fickle trolls around here. Bunch of clowns if you ask me.

        • roozbeh

Its not all of us. What ever happens there will be fanboys on both sides hating on each other.
Plus why give a damn about downvotes. What ever anyone says there is bound to be down votes on that comment.

          • Not_A_PC_Gamer

Not you roozbeh, you’re a good guy and a level headed fair minded gamer. I honestly don’t care about the downvotes to be be honest with you as it’s just people hating on me for slandering MS before.

I’m here because I still like to follow the happenings in the Xbox world despite the fact I’m picking up a PS4 first. I was also going to sell my xbl account with hundreds of games to a guy on ebay for nearly $400 bucks but I decided against it just in case I decide to get an Xbox one down the line and want to continue building my profile.

I won’t be flaming or trolling anymore however.. You have my word on that! :)

/Edit: 1 second after I posted this I already got 1 downvote! You see what I mean? Haha, I won’t let it get to me though.

          • roozbeh

thats good. in all seriousness xbox and playstation are really similar. both really do have awesome features. and both are worth having.

i know what you mean about the dislikes. but give it a week. there will be a change by then.

    http://www examiner com/article/phil-fish-breaks-a-gasket-tells-media-member-to-kill-himself
    LOOOL!

    • roozbeh

as much as he deserves to be hated i just kinda feel bad for him.

      • Death Dealer

Me too. But that’s what these indies get for being so arrogant I guess and Marcus Beer is right to throw it out there albeit at a tone I disapprove. These indies all think they are god or something after only having released one, yes ONE, game. The same for Jonathan Blow and even more so for Brian Provinciano.
I don’t think they should leave the industry, which Phil Fish is now doing, but I do think they should come to their senses with their trash talking and learn some humility. MS is creating a really big thing here and all they can do is criticize when most were supported by MS to begin with.
If there’s one thing MS likes it’s developers using their tools to create great things. Anybody who’s ever visited their campus knows this.

        • roozbeh

to be fair not all the indies were like blow and fish. almost all were happy and were willing to release on xbox.
to be fair we all kinda lose out here. the childishness of fish and beer made us all lose a potentially good game.

          • Death Dealer

            I agree.

    • Dennis Crosby

That guy have some issues. He insults alot of people, blames his problem on other people. Now he tells a guy to kill himself and quites his job and cancel his game.hopefully he gets some help

      • Not_A_PC_Gamer

I guess you never have seen the indy game movie have you? His attitude towards MS is 100% completely justifiable. You couldn’t even find those XBL arcade games because of the convoluted dashboard interface.

        • roozbeh

you know his attitude now is not justifiable at all. this isnt a stupid flame war. this idiot wants to leave the gaming industry as a whole. this isnt him supporting or hating anyone. this is phil fish saying he doesnt want to make a game for anyone.

          • Not_A_PC_Gamer

Yeah I agree… this is exactly the same impression I got..

          • roozbeh

seriously people whats with the dislikes?

        • Karl Cramer

Really? Because I remember Fez being on the dashboard homepage for the longest time.
The one guy from Team Meat was freaking out because the game didn’t show up until the afternoon. The afternoon. He started pulling out and eating his hair! Documentaries are edited to make it seem more dramatic.

          • Not_A_PC_Gamer

All I’m saying is.. did you see the Indy game move itself? It’s on Netflix if you haven’t. I remember how new the NXE was and how it made finding things so difficult in comparison to the blades? That’s basically what Phil complaining about…. well that and the fact that MS didn’t actually release it the arcade wed that they promised him.

Definitely check out netflix and look for it. That film was a real eye opener IMO. :)

          • Karl Cramer

Yes, that’s what I was talking about. It was edited to make it seem more dire. Documentaries do that. The reality was that both Super Meat Boy and Fez were featured on the home page and got a lot of dashboard ads for months afterwards.
Also note how the documentary neglected to say that Fez was supposed to be a Summer of Arcade title but Phil Fish missed that deadline. One of many, many deadlines he missed

          • Not_A_PC_Gamer

Thanks for the heads up.. apparently I didn’t remember all the little details of the film or I was either too drunk to remember. I can’t remember which one it was for me though! :)

I could have sworn he complained about it being hidden in the dashboard, or at least one of those indy developers did.

  • Vince

Major, what’s heavier a battery for a car or xbox one?

    • roozbeh

a battery for xbox one or the console itself?

    • Death Dealer

The car battery is heavier. Without a doubt… Do you want the Xbox One to drop through a shelf?

      • Nick Peck

        Don’t feed the trolls :D

  • Jason Voorhees

So Games with Gold…next is either Crackdown or the original Dead Rising 2…according to a Polish website.
Is that another Crackdown 3 hint?

    • roozbeh

I will bet you it will be neither.

      • Jason Voorhees

It would be strange if it wasn’t Halo 3 TBH.

        • slasaru

halo 3 have just been on sale this week, if im not mistaken
So little possibility it will be this time

        • mightywombat

Why is it strange? Would make more sense for it to be September’s game as an anniversary from its release. It’s not like they said it was one of the first games for this promotion.
And so glad that DR2 is going to be free, finally something I didn’t already own. Though, I never even bothered to finish Case Zero.

        • roozbeh

Well we dont know. I think we have to see how the first game of july goes. If its feedback is positive I think we won’t get halo 3 on july.

        • Karl Cramer

Halo Anniversary would be a better choice but you’re right. It’ll probably be Halo 3.

  • slasaru

Major, will there be any exclusive JRPG on xbox one this generation?

    • mightywombat

I am guessing there is nothing to announce right now, but they had a decent number of exclusives this gen. Hopefully they buy Atlus and then stand a chance in Japan ;)

      • Morris ヅ

TGS in Sep will see that stuff

      • boe2

Atlus becoming MS exclusive? It would be like squaresoft leaving Nintendo for Sony, times ten, instantly shifting all the odds in the great console race.

Not going to happen though :p

        • Death Dealer

It would be great if it did…MS has the cash ATM and could fight a no-compromise war. Having Atlus under their wing would be a big win for them overseas.

          • roozbeh

or they could just make a already owned shenmue game

          • Nick Peck

Aahhh Shenmue… I really miss the Dreamcast :) Had so many gems on it. I really wish they would either remake or reintroduce the Powerstone series, those games were a lot of fun.

Oh and not to mention Chu Chu Rocket!! Come on MS, make it happen!! :p

          • roozbeh

Man I miss sega consoles. The master was my first system. Played the heck out of it.
If shenmue or any of those games do come out I will pay a thousand bucks for them.

        • mightywombat

They did buy Rareware way back when, so you never know. The Atlus auction is still happening I’m pretty sure. I know its just wishful thinking, but MS could pretty easily outbid almost anyone else that would be interested. And they could still allow Atlus to make portable games, so those series wouldn’t be completely dead. I love their relationship with Cave so far and this would be a great way to take on Japan.

    • Morgon Britton

There aren’t gonna be any JRPG exclusives because Japan is more favored towards Sony than Microsoft. I can’t even think about a Japanese exclusive for Xbox right now to be honest.

      • roozbeh

        d4?

        • Morgon Britton

There is that one, I never heard of it until now, nor never heard of the company

          • roozbeh

            well now you know.

          • Karl Cramer

Then you didn’t own a Dreamcast.

      • boe2

A game being Japanese seems to have little to do with the platform it gets released on. As an example, the 360 has all these VERY Japanese SHMUPs that the ps3 simply lacks, even though it’s a very popular genre in Japan.

The 360 had a few exclusives that went multiplatform later (Tales of Vesperia is a good example), and on the ps3 they are also pretty rare (though admittedly, there are some really good titles, I bought a ps3 just for the disgaea series). It seems that the publishers realise that when releasing a jrpg in the West (which has a limited audience to begin with), it’s a bad idea to slice your market in half by releasing only on 1 platform.

        • slasaru

Yes, but also we have to admit that creating jrpg costs much less money than western style game
Tales of vesperia looks like a flash game but still rocks

      • slasaru

But jrpg does not only mean Japan – it’s japanese style rather, and there are many japanese style game nowadays – capcom, team ninja, final fantasy (which sucks lately)

I dont think getting Star Ocean cost too much for MS

  • Jason Voorhees

It’s good to see NVidia has finally demonstrated that realtime Cloud powered lighting models, what I was talking about some time ago, are becoming a reality even for the current internet.
Now MS can show the power of Azure over that of what NVidia uses.

    • DarkMaturus

Great find. I just read about this this morning. nvidia has credibility too. Us tech smart people have gotta keep educating. Masses of ignorant people have been spewing madness lol. I’m excited for cheap dedicated servers via Azure! That’s sweet!

      • roozbeh

I was actually on vg 247 and I happened to see an article about it. Awesome stuff right there.

    • Not_A_PC_Gamer

So completely delusional.. not just about the lies regarding cloud computing but about everything else..

      • roozbeh

ah come on. you seriously cant downplay this. it has some nice potential.

        • Death Dealer

“I won’t be flaming or trolling anymore however.. You have my word on that! :)”
          =>
“So completely delusional.. not just about the lies regarding cloud computing but about everything else..”

He’s just a lying troll, and a very bad one at that.

          • roozbeh

No son, it’s you who doesn’t understand and are unable to see the lies and deception that took place right before your very eyes since the announcement of the DRM to it’s reversal. Then again, I’m sure you aren’t very perceptive and most likely inept.

          • Death Dealer

Too bad I have university friends now working at MS disproving your every word. Swallow them and we’ll tolerate you. There’s no use being a whiner on this site anymore.

          • Not_A_PC_Gamer

And I’ve read countless articles on the net that say it’s nonsense. Also you don’t speak for everyone on this blog. Regardless, you know I’m a PS gamer now for the most part and you know I have a lot of discontent for MS. However I did decide to keep my 360 because I have too much invested in it. Whether or not I eventually get the Xbox One depends on what I see from MS in the next 4 years.

If PSN hasn’t improved to the level of Xbox Live with the PS4 or if I still deem the dual shock 4 as a horrible controller for first person shooters, I might compromise and come back to the one. As of this point though.. It’s not very likely.

As I said before, I’m here because I still like to keep up with what’s going on in the Xbox world regardless of the fact I’m buying a PS4. In the meantime, I won’t be trolling anymore..

Just please don’t confuse me for trolling just because I disagree with the many things MS are doing. I’m going to speak my mind either way, I just will refrain from flaming others while doing it. Don’t worry, I’ll be good.

          • Death Dealer

Good, like we all said, it’s never been about censorship, but the way you tried to convey your message didn’t convince anyone of the statements you are now making and neither does the reply to Jason.

          • Not_A_PC_Gamer

            Fair enough…

        • Not_A_PC_Gamer

I’m sorry roozbeh, I’m just very skeptical.

  • HyperTallih

Jason = Guest, Jason voorhees makes dubble accounts like of computer technican to say i’m a PS4 fanboy, Well well how he knows it? He hates me downvote me comments have extra account like Death Dealer, Jason Voorhees is here the biggest troll. Sure, and you see later downvotes here.

I’m not a fanboy, i love the xbox one and PS4. But i know… the biggest troll is the comment under me….

And sorry for my bad english i type too fast.

    • Death Dealer

Says the guy who’s facebook page is one PlayStation loveletter and who’s first comment on Disqus is a threat towards MS because he’s a Sony fan. Yeah, nice try kid. I’m not Jason Voorhees, it’s what I’ve been telling you for a long time and you still don’t get it. We are both Dutch and friends, that’s it.
Guest is a bug in Disqus where someone deletes his account, but I’m sure you don’t know anything about that as you delete your spiteful comments on GameKings all the time and you get removed from there faster than anything after everyone downvotes you.
It’s also very comforting to know that you are the one upvoting trolls all over the internet, including here and your previous comments match troll ones on here exactly. Don’t bother deleting the upvotes or posts as I took pictures, just like you do to threaten everyone that disagrees with you.

Major Nelson’s Comic-Con cosplay costume: Since Halo 4 showed that Spartan-IV armors now specialized, he could be an Ice Spartan, for cold weather combat situations.

From a long time listener.. after a long hiatus, I think most of your listeners would rather hear about what games you have been playing than your travels overseas. I have been listening for 30 minutes now, and this is far too long when it’s more than half of the podcast. This is a video game and tech podcast, not international travels.

  • Tonezorz

Missing the links to the travel power strip, also the engineer who tested the power supplies. Also, e, speed it up! you’re still the slowest-speaking member of the show, and you repeat portions of your stories after Major interrupts you (in order to try and speed you up). Such as, “I don’t have that problem with my 3DS” Major – “Why not?” e – “Well i don’t have that problem with my 3DS, because blah blah USB cord.” Zzzzzzzzzzzz

    • http://twitter.com/#!/maxlimitz Max Limitz

You’re right about the missing links, but I don’t mind “slowly” speaking e, as I’m Finnish.

    • KingWulfgar

Yeah, I really wanted to see that power supply test info! When you say you’re putting things in the show notes, put them in the show notes.
