Having gone to several E3 shows over the years, there is something to be said for its passing in its current incarnation. That being said, I know what it is like to stand around for 6 hours to play a game for 10 minutes and to have to deal with the chronically hygiene-challenged among us! With all the advances on Marketplace and the announced features of the other next-gen consoles, the possibility of live streaming press conferences and game video would be possible and even open things up to everyone, not just those lucky enough to attend. Everyone could get the scoop at the same time--you could even have random drawings for all those "attending" for swag giveaways and possibly participate in Q&A over Live! For those who never got the chance to attend, I am sorry as it was something to experience. For those who have attended, we all know the love/hate relationship with E3 that most of us have developed! I, for one, would rather see the millions spent on game development (and getting more Arcade titles into production faster!) instead of the huge mega-show E3 has become. I guess I will have to figure out how to meet porn stars and Paris Hilton another way! ;}

Sirharper brings up a good point above. Just to play Devil's Advocate, how would MS' E3 from this year fit into that statement? If this is now "for people in the gaming industry", then how would the E3 week appear on XBL? I mean, is it the "specialness" that got lost, or is it a feeling of entitlement?

Not being sarcastic here, I truly am wondering this point.

I think that because we got to this point that E3 got scrapped. But now a new problem arises: Is this smaller E3 just for "people in the industry", or is there a plan in place to appease both "people in the industry", and the folks who will be throwing their MONEY down on what they see? That is two different groups there, and the level of distaste between could grow exponentially in a short time.

I think there can be a distinction, but how many "industry" people would get buttsore over it, and conversely how many gamers and normal folk would wash their hands of it?

Excess is NOT a "cool" thing these days. You show excess, expected to be shelled.

And once you let someone into a process, you had better keep them in it. So honestly, turning the new E3 into a "industry club" convention would be a bad, bad idea on so many levels.

@ UNSCleric...what in the heck do you think this has to do with Sony, and why do you blame them for all this other than the fact your a fanboy? Did you not even see Larry's CORRECT accessment that the show was simply too overdone to be sustained. E3 was supposed to be for people in the gaming industry....NOT gamers! This is not a Sony slap in the face of gamers. Seriously, how do you even come up with the crap Napoleon Dynamite?

If you have the cash they will let you in. When I purchased my tickets this year I tried to explain who I was and I had a feeling I was wasting their time explaining it. “Next”!

If you do go pay the extra money if you can to get into the sessions. The meetings are by far better then any game I played on the show room floor. Very inspiring.

Yeah, they just screwed to public over on E3. Team Xbox has the same story. Well, sucks for me, because there are NO trade shows on the east coast for video games, and I was saving to go to E3 next year. Guess it'll be money well-spent elsewhere.

Gamespot just put something up on this topic O_O. It's cancelled to the public, only the press and important people can go now :( Click my name for more info. This kinda isn't shocking though Peter Moore said they were going try this in an interveiw when the interviewer said he couldn't play some games because it was to full.

Reading the joystiq article, I might not be that disappointed. I did go 2 years ago and it was great, but I was disappointed in a few things there.

Plus it's kind of unfair that people that tons of people could get in that worked at places like wal-mart and not really into games could get in, but big gamers couldn't get in if they weren't press or worked at a place that sold video games. I want to go to more gaming conventions that are open to the public, now that I don't work at a video game retailer.

without E3 how would we found out when Halo 2 was coming out?.... Even though it might cost alot of money but if the game looks and plays goood people go get the game and the company gets the money back

this might be better for gamers instead of spending all the money on hall and *** they can spend all the cash on live feeds to xbox live amd sony online wiinet demos even

also making a game ready for e3 can also have it own problems aswell it takes away time for the overall game via a month somtimes so they can make a demo that only people at e3 will play

but its going to be said i'll miss e3 but HHAHA suck *** IGN now ya can milk e3 with insider

I heard that a lot of the money raised at this one event (E3 07’) is used for The Entertainment Software Association to lobby congress about rating systems and all those wonderful issues the video game industry keeps creating. Nothing like a little Hot-Coffee to get people in congress involved in what I play.

I did go to the 06 event and I can’t imagine the industry not having this event next year. I hope someone tells everyone yay of nay because that show is not created in a couple of months.

Sounds like to me some industry "elites" got their feathers ruffled now.

It seems their super-duper We-also-have-adult-companies-here liefest has come back to haunt them now. Too many grab bags, perks, and excessive budgets have created a monster in which no one likes. The "industry" folk (which cracks me up to hear) don't get their perks anymore. The "average joe" got too close, and game companies can't gloss over bullcrap anymore (Valve's "AI" from a couple of years ago, Killzone 2 last year, and Sony this year).

Reading above I see a bunch of "industry" people whining about too many people. You helped that along folks, because at some point "rock star" mentality hit the scene and look at the "industry" now:

1)Less variety in titles.

2)Employee burnout from the folks who MAKE the games and not the folks who WRITE about them.

3)Too many "journalists" now so the perks can't get handed out.

4)Greed and market share override good content and planning.

Yeah, Sony fell hard this year, but don't blame E3 guys. Blame the fact that Sony's ways finally caught up to them this year. "It's a computer!". HAHAHAHA.

Cold water bucket time now. When you party all the time, someone has to pick up the bill. And EA is losing too much lately to keep giving you folks Godfather keychains and Spore models.

Where will this go? Curious to see. Sweep it under the rug and business-as-usual, or wake up and make some changes to the industry.

Who know Congress and the Games Industry would be so similiar at this time?
