The rumor is that the studios will hold off implementing HDCP until 2010 or 2012 but what happens if that rumor is wrong or they change their minds? I also happen to be one of those with a ginormous screen (121 inches diagonal front projection) so lack of 1080p or digital signals will affect me. The bottom line is that if the XBox 360 HD DVD drive cannout output digital video, it had better be dirt cheap!

Also, what are the chances that Microsoft will announce an XBox 360 with a built in HD DVD drive and DVI/HDMI?

Major, can you comment on how the lack of HDMI out will affect us once the movie studios implement HDCP? I've heard that if they decide to do this, your HDCP enabled HD-DVD disc will only play at like regular DVD quality (480p or so) if you're using a component video connection.... I know this is probably way later on when they'll decide to implement this, but it is still a concern. No one wants to have to go out and buy another HD-DVD player to play new HD-DVD's in HD.

re: How you'll control the HD-DVD player from the Xbox360 Dashboard

Of course, that Open HDDVD should be Open HD DVD :)

WILL THE HDDVD PLAYER FINALLY ENABLE US TO UPSCALE NORMAL DVD'S TO 720P/1080i ?

The current dvd playback on the 360 is piss poor and there is no technical reason why dvd playback is not upscaled. (in the US playback is at 480p/60 and europe 576p/50) The playback on european 360's is shocking, I get a better image using a normal SD dvd player than the 360. This is not a new request, many many users have complained about dvd playback.

I for one am not going to move onto the HDDVD bandwagon but I will definitley buy the HDDVD addon if it offers upscaling for standard DVD's.

Looks like everything is in place except a price point and release date (hopefully before Christmas ... perhaps a rival to the PS3 launch in November? Who knows).

But I have to admit, I'm not really happy with the external design of the drive. It's an attempt at making a 'small twin' version of the console, which is obvious, but why the ugly grey at the front? Keep it all white with a hint of green, that sounds better.

If they do start making HD-DVD movies in 1080p, will the 360 and the HD-DVD player be able to handle it and display 1080p?"

Even if they do add 1080p support to HD-DVD, you will not be able to view 1080p over component video, there simply is not enough bandwith to handle the full 1080p signal, you need HDMI for that. And major, the problem is not the picture quality between HDMI and Component video, it is HDCP. That is what it has always been about. Granted the studios are not implementing it yet, but IT WILL HAPPEN, then the XBOX HD-DVD player will be a brick that can only play early HD-DVDs. This is the movie studios that we are talking about, THEY WILL IMPLEMENT THE HDCP to protect their intellectual property. It is too easy to steal full bandwith HD video over component. To everyone, keep this in mind. Your investment for HD-DVD is for a flawed player that one day soon will only be able to play part of the HD-DVD releases. You also argue that cost is going to make people buy the 360 and the add-on over the PS3, but for games and High definiton functionality if you don't charge less than $199 for the add-on then it is the same price as the PS3 and you still don't have 1080p or HDMI. All of the sudden the price of the ps3 doesn't look outrageous. XBOX360 + HD-DVD = $499/$599, PS3 (with blu-ray) = $499/$599. You better get that thing out for $149 or less.

re: How you'll control the HD-DVD player from the Xbox360 Dashboard

Huh. That just doesn't seem right somehow. Why not simply split the icon into two. Here, take a look - http://twiskonline.com/pages/news/2006/8-august/images/dashboard-corrected.jpg

I'm also curious about a couple of things... Your podcast mentioned that 95% of the data from the HD-DVD is compressed and only 5% is sent over the USB, where it is then decompressed by the 360's CPU-cycles back to what should be a close representation of what the movie should look like. Questions:

1) Do the normal HD-DVD drives work like this? Anotherwords, is the information on the disc already compressed like that, or are you compressing it that much so you can push the data over the USB 2.0, because it can only handle "so much" bandwidth? If you're compressing because of the USB bottleneck then I'd rather have a stand alone HD-DVD player, that doesn't compress the signal like that...
2) Will HD-DVD ever support 1080p? If they do start making HD-DVD movies in 1080p, will the 360 and the HD-DVD player be able to handle it and display 1080p?
3) Still wondering about the DTS encoding...
4) Will normal DVD's played in the HD-DVD player upconvert to 1080i or 720p? That would be kick ass.
5) Will there be ANY functionality that we won't get if we decide to purchase the HD-DVD add on drive for the 360 vs. a stand alone player? IE. Advanced menu options and extras, etc.
Thanks again.... and sorry for the repeat questions in from my earlier posts.
