Actually, I don't think this update means that standard DVDs will be up scaled. Outputting in 1080p is almost useless for the HDTV world unless if you support an HDMI out. Please Major, get MS to add an HDMI out. This would make the 360 > the PS3. Until then the 1080p output in a non-feature.

This is great. I love they there are giving us free updates for this. It will be nice getting 1080p native over component, and upscaled DVDs (and older games) to 1080p. Rock on Major!

Always take press releases with a grain of salt. It says: "... an update that will allow the Xbox 360 console to output full 1080p games and video". Note that it says "output", it doesn't say "calculated in". We will see if there will be true 1080p games. Right now, many (most?) Xbox 360 games don't even support 1080i.

Upscaling DVDs cannot be done due to legal reasons (of course it's technically possible), according to Boris Schneider's Blog (German Xbox Product Manager) at dreisechzig.net.

Now Xbox 360 can do 1080p, I always remember a quote from UbiSoft or another big time developer, who before the 360 launched said, "...It is an amazing machine [xbox 360], it's so powerful, and we won't know everything it can do for years to come, The machine has things hidden inside that years down the road you'll say , wait it can do that too?!" It really is an amazing machine, can't wait to see what else Microsoft unlocks from their white box

Major, Give the 360 team a thumbs up for me for playing the ace they had up their sleeve this entire time. All though its been said from day 1 the 360 could do 1080p, now I see why MS keep it so vague. Basically luring Sony into a false sense of superiority, and then smacking them open handed when they least expect it.

Upconversion - clarify?

Any chance we can get a clarification on upconversion, from yourself or another MS team member? I'm seeing a lot of people assuming that DVDs will be upconverted to 1080p (1080i, 720p, etc) but no direct quotes saying that DVDs will be upconverted - just that it will output movies at 1080p. Upconversion would be killer, and I can't think of a good reason why the 360 couldn't do it, but I'd like to hear the official word from MS on this.

Wow, I didn't even think 1080p upgrade through the software was even possible, but I guess it is. Sony must be feeling some heat.

Maybe now with this news, MS should put out a HDMI cable, or at least a DVI one seeing as how I don't have HDMI on my HDTV. That was way too many ackronyms.

That 19,800 Yen price is nice, seeing as that translates into 168 USD I would LOVE to think the HD-DVD player for the states will retail for 149, Id snag that up in an INSTANT at that price. I have a feeling it will retail for 199, at the lease, though and that extra fifty + kills my interest.

Component cables can support enough bandwidth for most of the 1080p varieties I'm aware of. However, almost no current 1080p capable TVs will accept a 1080p input over component. Even the high end Sonys and Samsungs require HDMI for a 1080p input. Without HDMI support, Microsoft's 1080p announcement does not put them on the same footing as Sony. I'm hoping an HDMI adapter (or a new HDMI capable 360 model) is forthcoming.
