I don't think most of us are having a hard time understanding what he is trying to say, but the fallacy of the argument is that it is assuming equal processors rendering those scenes. Yes, a system maxing out displaying 720p will obviously have to lower it's quality (read: reduce what it can do with each pixel being shaded, etc.) to display that same picture in 1080p.

This is obviously some jab trying to say 1080p (read: PS3) is not all it's cracked up to be because it will have to compromise to throw games out at that resolution versus the 360 which targeted 720p when it was produced. What this tells me is that yes, even though the Fall Update will allow 1080p on the 360, any game produced for that resolution may look better at 720p because it will have to compromise things to get to 1080p. However, this should not in any way be generalized to the PS3 because it is ia completely different system and should not be judged in its ability to do games in 1080p untile we see them.

re: More on gaming in 1080p

I always find it amazing the uneccessary and often ignorant comments found in the console flame wars.

Bruce Dawson is one smart guy. His article is spot on and even if I didn't understand what he was talking about, he's one of the most knowledgeable guys working on the Xbox360, so if he says it chances are 101% its not only true, but he has test cases and statistics to prove it.

IMO, when you talk about frame buffers, you have to focus mostly on the GPU hardware. ATI powers the Xbox360, NVidia powers the PS3. Whereas Xbox lost to PS2 in fill rate (alpha blending and such), I think Xbox360 has the edge this time around.

1080i/1080p is the same thing to the GPU, you must fill 1920x1080 pixels. If I have some super neato (tm) pixel shader doing per pixel lighting with normal maps, etc (this gen) its going to take more time per pixel to render than straight diffuse texture rendering with directional lights (last gen). Do you want to be fillrate bound or cpu bound? I think to get 'next-gen' graphics, most games stand to be fillrate bound. So they choose 720.

I think its just the marketing juggernaut on the rampage, influencing the mostly ignorant masses with buzzwords. Personally I'm sick of graphics buzzwords. I rather focus on great gameplay with last gen graphics and more AI/Physics horsepower.

Most of the comments referring to Bruce's email are right up their with Jack Thompson's understanding of the game industry.

re: More on gaming in 1080p

All the DLP tv's use wobulation because they only have a resolution of 960x1080. Here is a wikipedia explanation of wobulation. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wobulation
