AVI - divx/xvid ...etc.

This HAS to be added for support. I have 300 Gigs of family movies and have to currently use the transecode360 to stream it to my 360.

If a programmer can include support for us - why can't a multi-billion dollar company?

I'm not going to "forget about it"...as people have commented on about this topic. The 360 has the capability to do this - Microsoft needs to make it happen.

Many of us CAN'T sell (the idea of) the 360 to our family and friends without these features.

Help us Microsoft...help you!

Just figured what is wrong with the Amazon and Into the caves HD vids from WMhdv as detailed above. They are 1440x1080 and the 360 renders them at 4:3. Just tried a 1920 x 1080 video and it works a treat :-). Wonder if an tweak is required so that the 360 renders 1440x1080 on the screen at 1080 and black borders the edges to fill.

Well nice to see some updates. Personally I'm a bit indifferent to the new dashboard look. I preferred the old on really. Nice to see the ability to play wmv files. As others have mentioned the big omission is multi way chat on the dashboard. It was stated in previous MS blogs that multi way chat couldn't be done due to limitations imposed (not technical problems) and that the video chat would be multi way. This has yet to happen. What has happened to multi way chat. Its is a real let down loosing this as it was one of the best Xbox Dashboard features.

I think somebody must clear up some issues about the fails and errors and crashes here, it seems like they rushed things up with this update.

Maybe it is better when they begin from scratch and rebuild there dashboard. and make it more organized when your add it.

This update bricks brand new consoles with the E71 error. I'm on my 3rd brand new 360 today! It's as if brand new 360's can't take going straight to the fall update without having the spring update installed first. Please Major, what is going on?

Well I'd love to be able to see the update benefits but I just got my console back from repair due to random crashes and the 3-red lights thing. So with what looked like a brand new console, I plugged everything back in again and went through the startup wizard. All was well until it tried to connect to XBox Live, found the update, started downloading the update, rebooted the box and then ... WHAT? ... a red light? oh please no. Yup, I now have the unknown error E71 and an offshore call centre telling me that I'll need to send it back again. So did the update cause a hardware failure? Is this what the woman was hinting at on the phone? Where's the factory reset button when you need it! What is E71 anyway? Surely those of us interested in our consoles to the point of chatting on the net about them would appreciate some level of detail on what's wrong with our prized hardware before we have to wave it goodbye yet again on the UPS truck. As a postscript to this tale, I also have to ring back later as my request couldn't be logged. Apparently the repair centre hasn't closed my previous request as its a fairly fresh case (yeah really? It just got delivered an hour ago!) *bangs head on console-empty table* Hope this is, as usual with these things, a blessed rare minority glitch.

E71 error after downloading the update on 3 brand new machines. I thought the machines were bad but after the third one today (walmart must think I'm nuts) I called microsoft support. The guys eventually talked to his Supervisor to find out if there were any new details, but nope. Apparently there are quite a few people getting this error - but he says it seems it's on systems that come from a certain manufactoring plant. not sure how they tell that, but I gave him my serial # so maybe that's how. Anyone else getting this? At this point they said they don't know how to fix it, and it's touch since this is their first firmware update. If it was just to the HDD I could run it without the HDD in but it's direct to firmware They say to keep an eye on xbox.com to see of update on this, as they may put out an update to correct this issue. Although they guy wasn't sure if it would fix systems that already have the E71 error as it's before the dashboard and on firmware, but it at least would prevent others from getting the error. Maybe the Good Major will know something about this by tomorrow and make a post with some info? I'm taking my system back to the store for an exchange (this is a replacement, my first is toast after a year) - but others that can't return theirs should probably call microsoft for an exchange. Any thoughts Major?

Hey I was browsing through the MS site and found this content, mailny HD videos that you can now stream to your xb360....some of those look really cool! Speed7 windows media encoder is free from microsoft if you have a genuine XP, and its all you need to transcode pretty much anything to WM9 ive done some tests trying out functionality and it works just fine (the encoder is pretty slow tho) I meam c'mon microsoft i can understand your stance on dvsx/xvid even tho i think you're wrong. But at least give us H.264 we know the 360 can decode this using ATi's decoder now just add functionality from DVD because i archive my home movies in H.264

I retract my former statement. I have since discovered from the xboxteam blog that Microsoft does in fact offer such a product! hooray Microsoft you never fail me, you are full of surprises and I love you for that. I just can't stay mad at you. Any way check it out I'm downloading it right now.
