I must give them credit, the hardware implementation of the PS3 is great. I think in this field they've done better job than MS did with the 360. I just read an article over at Daily Tech "The Sony PlayStation 3 Dissected"(http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=4908) , and they took apart the the entire PS3 down to the motherboard. My highlights:

The Cover - All you need is to remove literally one Torx screw to get the top glossy cover off. This is a far cry from the pain it is to get the housing of the 360 off, not that you really need to anyway so whatever.

Slot-Loading Disc Drive - I think slot-loading is the way to go, and it's a shame that the 360 is the only one in the next generation to not take this route. I think it's cooler, and one of the problems I have with the disc tray on the 360 is that I can't get the IR port to read my remote after I eject a DVD.

Built-In Wifi - I think it was a mistake for MS to not make this standard, it's a mistake Sony didn't make it standard but at least it comes integrated in their more expensive model. There's something to be said about the community aspect of this, and I think MS realizes this now looking at the built-in Wifi with the Zune. Imagine us getting together for some lanning with H3 and not having to run cable or get a big switch for 16 different boxes, instead we just turn on the Wifi and connect on an ad-hoc network and let our boxes detect each other for the LAN. I think one thing MS did better than Sony was the fact that their Wifi adapter supports the A band which is much better for media streaming, but nonetheless the wifi should have been standard and even the Wii has it.

Flash Memory Reader - Once again the 360 is the only one not to use a standard. I don't like proprietary memory cards because once the next-gen rolls around they're useless. The Wii and the PS3 have the option to use a standard SD card for your game-saves.

Standard HDD - We've complained about this to death, and the 360 games will suffer because of this compared to the PS3 games. Imagine how much better GoW could have been if Epic got their way and MS made the HDD standard. One really cool thing about the PS3 is that you can use an HDD you want. You literally remove a cover on the PS3, pull the HDD out, then plug in the new bigger/faster HDD you bought and the PS3 gives you a notification that a new HDD has been detected and must be formated. After formatting the PS3 correctly identifies the new drive along with the increased size/speed.

Power Supply - I hate the power brick! The PS3 has a built-in power supply, all you do is basically take the power cable, plug one end into the PS3 and the other into the power socket. It works exactly like a PC, once again NO proprietary power cable required you could literally take the cable of your PC and plug it into the PS3. I honestly don't care for the increased size for the console either, I actually preferred the original xbox with the power supply built-in. Another benefit is that if it's built into the same box you could use some sort of shared cooling solution instead of having fans on the power brick.

A/V Outputs - You don't need one end to plug into a special port on the PS3. Once again there's no proprietary ports required. You can use a standard HDMI cable you already have to plug into the PS3, and you can plug an optical cable directly into the PS3 also. Even if the 360 releases an HDMI cable eventually, you'll need one end to plug into their proprietary port on the back of the 360. The 360 needs HDMI, I can tell the difference on my TV with how good the colors look on the PS3 and I would love to use my VGA cable with the 360, but unfortunately I'm suffering from the same problem many people are with the VGA implementation on the 360, the colors are very washed out even after trying to adjust the settings.

Cooling - The PS3 cooling system is ingenious. Make sure you click the link at the top of this post to check out the pics, but basically it's ONE heat sink integrated with some heat pipes topped off by ONE larger cooling fan. All of this equals a very quiet PS3 even under full load. I swear the loud fans on my 360 are incredibly annoying sometimes and when watching HD-DVD movies with the HD-DVD drive it becomes the most annoying.

Backwards Compatibility - This is how it should be done. Guess what, no emulation required. On the motherboard of the PS3 off to the side they have an Emotion-Engine/Graphic Synthesizer chip which is of course a new version incredibly reduced in size. This would be equivalent to having an original shrunken intel/nvidia chip for backwards compatibility on the motherboard of the 360. There will definitely be some problems with the PS3 implementation at first, but it's incredibly superior to the 360 emulation route.

In conclusion, my 360 is still my favorite console but hopefully MS can take some hardware design cues from Sony and do a better job next time. This all seems to make sense since Sony is primarily a hardware company and MS is just beginning to do hardware and is an expert with the software. There's still no comparison with the software on the PS3, MS rules by far in this dept. Sony's online is also a joke.

Microsoft, please, please, fix the VGA and let's get some HDMI 1.3.

re: Show #202 The one about Xbox history

Major: You mentioned you're using a Windows Mobile device now. Can you tell us which one? Also is the real reason you're using it to test out the Live Anywhere client for Windows Mobile? :)

P.S. RSS feeds might be cool, actually. Now that I think about it, it would be nice to see news headlines pop up in a 360 dashboard notification, and then I can press the Guide button to read the full story. Naaaiice.

re: Show #202 The one about Xbox history

Revolt Revolt Revolt :D Revolt Revolt Revolt
