Look--they're the original recordings, it's new content, and it's content that most folks that like Rock/Alternative/Metal care for. Considering the tracks alone would be $6.00 + tax at iTunes, and there's more work that goes into these than some whining folks care to admit...it's a good value.

That doesn't seem too bad to me. I hear people saying the songs should be 100 points a piece, but that is unrealistic. A song on iTunes is just under a buck, but there is far more involved in these songs that an extra 25 cents would cover."

$2.08 (per song as DLC) - $1.00 (per song on iTunes) = $1.08 (extra per song as DLC)

Where do you get 25 cents?
100 points per song does work out $1.25 per song, but your statement claims the extra 25 cents would cover the "more involved" process. Perhaps you meant the extra 25 cents would NOT cover the extra work?

If they sold the packs at 400 points for 3 songs, it works out to $1.66 per song. Surely an extra 50% (plus) profit per song would be more than enough to cover the "extra work" involved, no? Is it really reasonable for them to charge more than double the iTunes cost, when it's limited to "in-game" use only?

I think they charge that much, simply because they can.

Many people have proven they're willing to spend their "points" without much thought....which is the reason we have the "points" system to begin with. As soon as people buy points, they no longer consider it money, and are therefore willing to flush it down the toilet without a care. Which would be fine, IMO, were it not for the fact that we ALL end up paying the inflated prices in the long run.

In short, the idiots who don't care about the value of a dollar are costing me money. Pricks.

re: In Game Content: Guitar Hero III

Zammel,

I'm not trying to tell you how to spend your money, if you're happy w/ it, more power to you... but as far as paying the programmers? go back and read my comment on page 18. 100 points ($1.25) would ABSOLUTELY be a fair price for each song.I've worked in music before, and I can say for a fact that as far as royalties are concerned Activision is probably paying something like fifteen cents (MAYBE as high as thirty cents) per song sold. That's for the original master tracks - the covers were most likely done as works for hire meaning the artist was paid only once for their efforts - In a nutshell, the pricing is as it is because of greed.

Again, I'm not here to chastise anyone for their spending habits, I may disagree with you, and I certainly disagree w/ activision, but at the end of the day it's your money to spend, so please don't take this as an attack - it's not. Just dropping some information out there for you to read.

re: In Game Content: Guitar Hero III

Thanks as usual for the heads up, Major. I downloaded the Foo Fighters Pack, and I'm having a lot of fun with it.

As for the people complaining, I both agree and disagree with your comments. Yes, the game just came out, so it would have been nice if these songs were included on the disc. I also agree that these songs should be sold individually, but this model worked for Activision on GHII, so I am not surprised that it did not change with GHIII. At least this time(so far,) the songs are packed in a logical fashion. As long as this continues, I will purchase packs that appeal to me.

As for the cost argument, I do not understand the problem. When you break it down, each song is about $2.08. That doesn't seem too bad to me. I hear people saying the songs should be 100 points a piece, but that is unrealistic. A song on iTunes is just under a buck, but there is far more involved in these songs that an extra 25 cents would cover. Not only do the usual royalties have to be paid to the artist and the label, but Activision also has to pay the programmers at Neversoft who make these packs.

In short, if you don't like them, don't buy them. Complaining will not change anything, because there will still be enough people who find them reasonably priced to prevent things from changing. I also have a feeling that the complaining will continue with Rock Band as well, because even though the songs will be sold separately, their individual prices will most likely be around the same price as Guitar Hero III's.

re: In Game Content: Guitar Hero III

I have both Guitar Hero 2 and 3, they're some of my favorite games. But I will NOT pay for this outrageously priced content. How does it work that the 70 in game songs (plus backgrounds, animations, graphics, etc) cost $60, but 3 new songs cost $6.25 (500 MS points)? That is asinine. That is the sight of a company trying to milk its customers. I for one am not going to be had like this.

If 100,000 people buy a 500 MSP pack (that's $625K each pack), think how much would be made if 130,000 people bought a 400 MSP pack (that would be $650K)! People are only going to pay what they think is reasonable (or a bargain) so if we "complainers" are the small voice of a larger group, Activision would be smart to make that extra $50K for "being thankful" to the community. If for no other reason than money, people will buy the new packs because they think "Oh noes! It's teh 100MSP cheaper. Better get it while it's hot!" Bargain!

In business, it's not all "rape and pillage" tactics. Sometimes you get more than just money from goodwill.
