I have decided to no longer play the video disc game. Instead I will download movies I want to watch and save lots of $$$ by not having to purchase a Bluray player and movies (which will sit on a shelf for years never to be used again). I am sorry to see HD DVD lose out as it seemed to be the superior format for hi def movies.

As long as the game system I purchase has good games on it then so be it. HDDVD and Blu-Ray both are just side effects to what should be a gaming system first and foremost. Make no mistake...I own an Xbox but am not opposed to the PS3, but right now the Xbox simply has better games. A simple look at the past year and the list of hot games shows that in the gaming arena Xbox is the current leader. When the PS3 begins to put more 1st party killer apps then I will consider the switch or the possibilty of owning both systems.

re: What's up with HD DVD?

Looks like the Sony fanboys are out in force on the Gamerscoreblog. Quite sad really that they're going on about a movie format which Sony themselves created. I didn't buy into any of this format war nonsense, so I'm happy to have no part in the fallout which follows. All this will be redundant soon anyway when downloads become more and more popular over physical media.

What a waste of money. I'm going to to part exchange mine (and all my HD-DVD's) for a PS3. Not for the games mind, but purely for the blue-ray player. PS3 is shite other than that. At least the Xbox360 is still the best as a 'games' console.

oshiba Corporation today announced that it has undertaken a thorough review of its overall strategy for HD DVD and has decided it will no longer develop, manufacture and market HD DVD players

and recorders. This decision has been made following recent major changes in the market. Toshiba will continue, however, to provide full product support and after-sales service for all owners of Toshiba HD DVD products.

HD DVD was developed to offer consumers access at an affordable price to high-quality, high definition content and prepare them for the digital convergence of tomorrow where the fusion of consumer electronics and IT will continue to progress.

"We carefully assessed the long-term impact of continuing the so-called 'next-generation format war' and concluded that a swift decision will best help the market develop," said Atsutoshi Nishida, President and CEO of Toshiba Corporation. "While we are disappointed for the company and more importantly, for the consumer, the real mass market opportunity for high definition content remains untapped and Toshiba is both able and determined to use our talent, technology and intellectual property to make digital convergence a reality."

Toshiba will continue to lead innovation, in a wide range of technologies that will drive mass market access to high definition content. These include high capacity NAND flash memory, small form factor hard disk drives, next generation CPUs, visual processing, and wireless and encryption technologies. The company expects to make forthcoming announcements around strategic progress in these convergence technologies.

Toshiba will begin to reduce shipments of HD DVD players and recorders to retail channels, aiming for cessation of these businesses by the end of March 2008. Toshiba also plans to end volume production of HD DVD disk drives for such applications as PCs and games in the same timeframe, yet will continue to make efforts to meet customer requirements. The company will continue to assess the position of notebook PCs with integrated HD DVD drives within the overall PC business relative to future market demand.

This decision will not impact on Toshiba's commitment to standard DVD, and the company will continue to market conventional DVD players and recorders. Toshiba intends to continue to contribute to the development of the DVD industry, as a member of the DVD Forum, an international organization with some 200 member companies, committed to the discussion and defining of optimum optical disc formats for the consumer and the related industries.

Toshiba also intends to maintain collaborative relations with the companies who joined with Toshiba in working to build up the HD DVD market, including Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, and DreamWorks Animation and major Japanese and European content providers on the entertainment side, as well as leaders in the IT industry, including Microsoft, Intel, and HP. Toshiba will study possible collaboration with these companies for future business opportunities, utilizing the many assets generated through the development of HD DVD.

HD-DVD was on a shakey ground to begin with. The PS3 had the advantage of being the cheapest BR player on the market and it was a games console. It's a no brainer. You have two markets buying it the HD movie buffs and the gamers. By proxy the gamers will start to buy BR movies. The same happened with the PS2 and its DVD capabilities.

Add to this the fact MS wanted its backed format to fail so that it can push its user base of 10 million users to buying HD downloads...its not like they will make HDDVD titles in a few months time is it.

All in all MS did a great job of shafting its own userbase :)

HD/DVD had everything going for it. Cheaper production, interface was

fantastic. I am not really sure what on earth happened, but I think

it all comes down to data storage. You can store more data on a BluRay

disc than you can a HD/DVD. That is why they won.

Ms helped develop the code for HD/DVD, they have it! They can help

Bluray with their product. I will miss HD/DVD, got the player for

Christmas ( Xbox 360). I guess I will just have to go out and buy
