Airdom – the filename is “MSKeynoteCES2008.mp3” and it’s given by Bill Gates. That’s last years.

I switched off the second I heard Steve Ballmer’s name announced … sorry, but he’s an incredibly poor public speaker in my opinion, and since the whole “Developers” rant and the infamous “I love this company” fanboy screaming I’ve gone right off anything he presents. Why can’t he just deliver a keynote with a genuine and authentic enthusiasm for his products.

Just my opinion of course, but I preferred listening to Bill talk about Microsoft products.

very dull for a keynote speech, 2009 looks like a dry year for games.

If you want some constructive comments :-

He did OK – he was really uncomfortable first few lines which is to be expected, but he got on track pretty quickly and seemed at ease. Overall you should be reasonably happy, while there was nothing ground breaking it was professionally delivered and gave an impressive overall outline of MS’ future direction (even when you are emulating – that was smoothed over pretty well).

To your speech writers (I do this for a living) he overplayed some of what he deemed his bigger lines and they plummeted.

The “I am a PC” line is perhaps the best example, it is a responsive advertising campaign which has not and will not stick, its too overt and the supporter base is not made up of those type of people – Also the product is not the type they will ‘die in a ditch’ for unlike their mac counterparts. You cannot get people to pin a windows powered Dell/HP machine to their chest like a mac (sonys are as close as you can get and thats still a ways off) What you can do is make a windows machine part of the modern urbanites essential kit with a function over style angle.

Having said that the Pharrell Williams direction is probably closer to where you should be going – link the essential kit idea with playing up a ‘Geek Chic’ versus ‘jock’ (I hate that description but it best describes what I want to say)

I’d have to agree with thetonyclifton for the most part. The other major thing that irked me was the repetition of & references to the 3 screens mantra. I know that it’d be one of the core things that the presentation would have been pushing and likely going to be a marketing slogan but I think it was used a bit much. If I got a bit tired of it just listening to the keynote, I’m not likely to respond well to the ads (then again I have a very low tolerance of repetition so I’m skewed to one side here). I’ve not seen the video version so I’m not sure what the presentation looked like but I’d probably have focussed more on presenting the 3 screens visually rather than audibly.

As for the voice, I think I’ve changed my mind, now he sort of reminds me of Henchman 24 from The Venture Brothers

Heh heh, Steve played off his previous ‘Steve Ballmer Rant Dance’, as funny (and shocking) as it was, it was a ‘staple moment’. I’m not big on keynotes (sermon for business types and using a collaboration of words that mean “money, fart, mo money, burp, business”) in repetition, but this keynote was a nice. The PC, The Phone and The TV statement was the most interesting words of the entire speech. And my response to that was “What the devil!?” as my anticipation grew more.

@thetonyclifton (replying to the video version)
My words in reaction to all what was said: Sony, Aibo, Qrio / Aibopet (a great innovator) / Toyota. Essentially getting to the bottom line: (Product X) a great product, expensive product with loads of buyers and fans, a nice OS and a fan so in-love with it, he made significant upgrades and though unofficial, users loved each other for it. Will Company X listen to the customers and the unofficial contributors? Customers come in all uses, places, ages and intellects.

Windows 7? Already? I’m not made of money here. Microsoft should fix Vista first or send a free copy of Windows 7 to each Vista purchaser. This just plain disgusts me.

I’m ok with the Xbox stuff I guess, although, I think that Prime Time should have been released with NXE.

Total snorefest. One of Microsoft’s weakest Keynote’s in a long long time.

Hmmm… I tried to stop at Win98SEb, it was stable, did not have a lot of ‘candy’ as XP, better than ME. Now I’m on WinXP Pro. I love it. I experienced Vista and immediately spit it out and refuse to upgrade. Especially when I called Adobe to see if my suites would work with it. When the customer service rep (very nice one who you swear are robots) “Yes, we can upgrade all of your software for Vista for only $1200, would you like to upgrade now?” My software alone (though outdated – but still very useful) is a little over $7G (and some of it like Poser6, ZBrush 2 and 3, After Effects eludes) me so I do not even use at all any more.

As for PrimeTime, hmm… 1 vs 100!? It sounds like a good idea for ‘sane’ family types to come together and be social in Spring 2009. Until then I just have Party Chats and we play http://www.isketch.net/i2.html. (If using a wireless controller, wiggle the analog every 2 or 3 minutes or you lose chat because the controller turns off.)

NM – I found the Windows 7 Team Blog where they just posted an updated. Apparently (and obviously) they are having some network issues and want to make sure Microsoft.com is going to be able to handle the many many people who will be hitting this download as soon as it goes live. Here’s a link for anyone interested:
