Xbox LIVE sees biggest month ever

January 2009 saw the most members join LIVE than in any previous month since the service launched in November 2002. Currently more than 17–million people are now connected over LIVE. In addition, the January NPD numbers also reveal that Xbox 360 sales were up 33 % from last year. Some other PR factoids for you to digest:

Edit: Here is a link to the official press release

  • OMG Aero

So how many people actually joined Live in January?

  • Willeth

    Gold or Silver?

  • Mcmax3000

Awesome news. Always glad to hear of the service expanding.

  • sarge mat

I though it was over 20M connected over Live? If its 17 then Sony is ahead. Not that it really matters.

  • MadMojo

Great job! I love the service and it’s why I bring all of my friends to it. =)

  • BillyMagnumFOD

How about some free codes/avatar clothes to celebrate? 🙂

  • CompactDstrxion

Each household has watched an average of 16 movies over the service

My behind! Perhaps qualify that by saying households that actually live in a place you can get Netflix and households that are subscribed.

Why not partner with one of the many providers outside the US for the rest of us, or is our money not as good as yours?

  • Adauctus

    Such hostility.

  • Frayteez

what does gta4 have to do with anything for January?? the dlc comes out THIS month

I personally thought August was bigger. Yeah there wasn’t Netflix(which i dont even have because the quality was AWFUL) but you had amazing XBLA games such as Braid and Castle Crashers.

That was an awesome month for me.

  • DrAllsopp

Whoopeedoo. So 4% of the worlds population can use the service.

Any chance the remaining 96% of humankind having a chance to try this out?

Fat chance. We are expected to pay more than the US while getting less.

    Wonderful isn’t it.

“Xbox 360 hardware failures were up 33 % from last year”

My 02/2008 Elite Falcon just got E 74 a few days ago ¬¬
And guess what, Microsoft won’t fix my 360 because I live in Brazil and bought the console in US(they don’t even sell Elites here).
And it’s cheaper to buy a new Arcade Jasper than to pay for a third party to TRY to fix it(with no guarantee that it’ll work afterwards).

  • oO MG81 Oo

Major where’s this weeks Live activity stats??

  • Briguymaine

Ditto to what Shiaoran said. I contributed to the 30% in crease in sales because mine died 2 months after the warranty ended. So with Circuit City going out of business I bought a new one for 20% off. I’ll see about bringing my old one back to life with a x bracket fix but I’m not holding my breath. The Xbox Live service and games are great, but the hardware needs some help.

  • Shelldragon3

I just joined the Xbox community in 2008 myself. I started making game comics because of it. if you want to see for yourself. I’m not the only female to combine comics and games(awkward zombie is another example, I’m trying not to compare myself though because she is very awesome.)but maybe I’m the only one doing mostly Arcade games? *shrug* I’m waiting for someone else to show me up.
I also recently got Netflix post new dashboard because it was going to be viewable on Xbox. I don’t use cable tv so I like to watch movies and shows over the internets via Netflix. Hooray for cross promotion.
On another note the box I’m using is a first generation 360 and it hasn’t died yet, did I just jinx it?

  • Hi I am Phil

    Good to see.

  • Joergen8

And whats best, it didnt crap out during the holidays! MS have really gotten ontop of things. Except for the 360 hardware reliability of course.

  • Xbox Sonic

    Good job and congratulations!

  • Kendoguk

Sarge, PSN has around 14-15 million, thats not more.

  • Anonymous

“Xbox 360 is the only place to get the complete storylines for hit games like Grand Theft Auto IV and Fallout 3”

That’s Microsoft for ya. Using money to buy exclusives and exclusive DLC.

Well, I’m not surprised by this news…

    Kigmal = douche

  • Agent Klutz

I believe there were 3 or 4 different websites that were offering the 12+1 for 29.99 in the past month. We all know that Microsoft controls the price at the retail level and I hope they continue with this trend of lower prices.

  • BillyJo

when will you offer Netflix services outisides US ???? if the services is ok on the web all around the world i dont understand why it would be not on the 360 ????

    explain me plz |||

  • VILIUS169

    great.i love xbox live

  • MetalGearFloppy

So, everyone outside the U.S still wants to know when we’re getting a similar service to netfix… when we’re gonna get TV shows on marketplace and what happened to IPTV for us?

I know there’s a heap of licensing issues involved in getting these services running, but I’m pretty sure it would be possible to achieve.

Some kind of statement saying that it’s being worked on still and we haven’t been forgotten about would be nice… off the top of my head I can think of at least 10 or 15 media/tv companies that would no doubt jump at the chance to help provide/make a profit from such services here in the UK, I’m sure it’s the same elsewhere in the world.

So? Have we been forgotten? Is all that stuff in the pipeline for us? Do tell….
