Show 380: Child’s Play dinner and getting ready for the Holidays

Technical Note: This weeks show is being presented as an enhanced .M4A file. In addition to using a modern codec that results in better sound and smaller file size, if your media player supports it you may see chapter markers, URL’s and/or contextual artwork for some areas of the podcast.

Please leave a comment and let me know what you think of this new format.

If your player does not support M4A, you can download the regular un-enhanced MP3 file here.

  1. Thanks Major. URI links are working fine in iTunes 9 when the album artwork inset window is visible. Haven’t seen a way to use any other features, but I will try it on iTunes 10 later.

  2. In the post above you said that the iTunes podcast version was MP3, when it’s actually the M4A.

In iTunes 10, as long as you have the album art panel open, you can see links and use the chapter markers to skip around.

  3. The new format doesn’t work on my Windows Phone 7, which means I have to download it manually. Can you create an RSS feed for the MP3 version, please? All my podcasts (except this one, now) sync automatically through RSS subscriptions, and I don’t want to have to manage the episodes manually.

It seems odd to me that you would publish the podcast in a format that can’t be played on Microsoft’s own players. Although, if you can get Zune to do an update to support the format then I’m sure a lot of people would be happy!

  4. Great audio quality. You emailed me a link to the last show in M4A which played fine in Zune software but none of the features worked. Same goes for this episode. It auto synced to my Zune HD and sadly wouldn’t on there, keeps popping up a message that says “video not supported for this item.” It makes me sad, the features sound awesome and I would love to have the functionality on my Zune HD. Get the team working on a patch asap 🙂 Nice work trying something new but I would perfer the MP3 format for a while until at least the audio alone could play on my Zune HD.

  5. MP3 as the main format please – I feed these through RSS and putting up M4A as the main source screws this up. Sure link these as alternatives, but it’s a podcast, it doesn’t need high fidelity or extra crap, given the way I *listen* to them – listen being the operative word here.

  6. I’ll be happy with a M4A feed and an MP3 feed for those who can’t use M4A.

As for me, I enjoyed having this show, and the audio quality was MUCH improved this week. I’d prefer to keep M4a in my iTunes feed.

  7. No no no no no! M4A files are a problem for many players. They may play but if you pause or stop and play later it starts from the beginning. The MP3 should still be the default for the feed and the M4A should be the optional link.

  8. To anyone from MS, just a heads up, a TON of MS employees email and passwords were leaked along with the gawker leak. Most notably was Trixies among others. You guys may want to get on it if you see this.

  9. It sounds like I’ll need to move back to the MP3 file format until I can get the Windows Phone 7 and Zune teams to support M4A. Did any other players choke on the M4A?

  10. Hey Major, my preference is MP3 format as well as I listen to it in the car and my car only supports MP3 format. Is it too much to ask to move the MP3 format back to the normal feeds and maybe create a new RSS/iTunes feed for the enhanced format to get the best of both worlds for everybody ?

  11. M4A does not work on Windows Phone 7 (yet) so definitely either leave default to MP3, or create a new feed please! Was most annoyed when I found this out on the train!

  12. So this week, I’ll kick the MP3 out in the main feed…and then maybe (if time permits) make an M4A as a seperate download until the Windows Phone and Zune teams can update their firmware to handle that file type. Yes. I did have an email exchange with the WP7 and Zune teams about this 😉

  13. actually, Zune can take M4A as i bought a song off itunes (which was in M4A) and that works just fine….so I am thinking that the Zune HD cannot handle the features added.
