    1.68 GB?! Holy crap! I missed this game the first time around, so I was going to download the trial to give it a shot, but I’ll have to clear some space first.

    As I sat looking at the box for the orginal game last night, I thought to myself, “self. How cool is it that you can play this on kids old Xbox and tomorrow you are going to be able to play it on the big screen with the 360.”…now, excuse me while I go buy a game I have no problem with paying for again.

    Larry, if you’re reading…

    Is there ANY chance of this getting a disc release in North America (or anywhere else in the world that you know of)?

    I purchased the original Xbox edition of BG&E upon release in December 2003. I love the game, and would very much like to obtain this new HD reissue — but I loathe downloads. If this title remains in the realm of download-only, chances are slim to none that I’ll purchase it.

    A little background: I’m 47-year old with 11 systems (currently) plugged into my 3D HDTV, and a very large library of original titles, all in complete and near-mint condition (I take excellent care of my collection, and it’s treated me well in return). There are many titles I’ve replayed over the past 25+ years, and I could only do this because of the physical carts and discs I purchased.

    With future game purchases, I prefer a form of physical media that still gives me this ability for another 25+ years. Sadly, downloads via Xbox Live does NOT guarantee this — something I learned after being screwed by the cessation of the original Xbox Live v1 services. I certainly cannot redownload any of those items I “own”, can I? I’m not anti-download… I’m simply anti-accessibility.

    While downloads are fine for some people, they certainly are not for everybody… at least , not yet (indeed, many gamers I know also refuse to purchase download-only titles). Until a more “permanent” form of download repository exists, some method should be in place to make HD remasters and the better Xbox Live Arcade titles available at retail. (Sony’s already had great success selling HD remasters at both retail and online… hint hint).

    For Microsoft, the “Xbox Live Arcade Compilation Disc” was a positive step… but it’s been over three years since the first (and so far only) volume. Additional releases are long since overdue — is there anything in the planning stages?

    Apologies for the length. Many thanks in advance for any answers you can provide (or divulge)…

    Cool beans, I enjoyed the original, although I might wait for a sale on this one. Would prefer to buy Torchlight next week instead. Also, Baron Brain, Major Nelson is not the person to be asking about a retail release. Ubisoft are the IP owners and publishers of this game. Besides, you can put it on a USB flash drive. There’s your physical format.

    Sweet! As soon as I log in on my Xbox I’m getting this. Been waiting… Own the Original and never played it enough because by then I had moved on to 360 and had all kinds of new stuff to play. Been waiting…

    Odd World Stranger next please.

    (Oh and how come PSN gets Dragon’s Lair and Space Ace and we don’t? =( )

    Thats why you need to own both systems, get the best of both worlds:)

    BTW on topic, is there a way to turn up the brightness?? I couldnt find the option. I hate when games leave this option out, that and not being able to skip cut scenes really urks me.

    Normally (in previous generations) I would have most likely owned multiple systems. But with this generation I didn’t really feel a need to. There have been a few games pushing me to get a PS3 but it still hasn’t become a major factor yet to me. Since I got a standalone cheaper Blu-Ray players I don’t really feel like I need to get one. 360 has been pretty damn good to me and treated me nicely over the years. =)

    The control options for x and y axis are really odd, any chance they could patch it so you can invert them independently?

    I think it’s great they released this. This is one of those classic xbox games that never got enough attention. I really hope people give this a shot and make this release successful as from what I hear the reception to this really is going to play a role on how soon they focus on the sequel.

    @Baron Brain comment:
    You can download the game as many times as you want for as long as you keep your gamertag (not relevant if it is Gold or Silver) be aware that you will be able to play it in the first downloaded xbox (the one with the license) and a second xbox that has your account currently logged into xbox live. This is by design. I have yet found a title that I have had bought since 2006 that is not available anymore under my downloads in my account and I doubt it ever happens. So yes, you can download any thing you bought as many times as you like.

    There are two arcade compilation discs, not just one, and the idea of these are not to substitute the arcade download system. In fact, having Games-on-demand is great, I would love GoD with some way to lend it to my friends… that would rock, definitively.

    I’m against buying new discs (e.g. need for speed hot pursuit) because they include a token to play online, meaning that if you change your gamertag you will need to buy a new token to play online! how is that for a rip off?

    Bottom line, keep your gamertag in a safe place, and do not change countries (changing country physically is possible, but it is impossible from an xbox live perspective) and you will have no problems with any downloads.

    Regards.

    @Baron Brain:
    You have an interesting and understandable perspective, however I see the future having less and less physical discs and more downloadable content, so your hopes for retail releases are probably never gonna be realized. But keep in mind that the downloadable games are usually $15 or less, so they’re not nearly as expensive as retail releases. For example, if Ubisoft did release BG&E retail, it would cost at least $20 and my guess would be an MSRP of $29.99. So think about it in terms that you’re getting a $10 or $20 dollar discount for the fact that you aren’t able own a hard copy of the game. So in the end it’s totally up to you, but you are missing a lot of great games on the Xbox Live Arcade.

    @a1984darkboy…
     .
    Thanks for the reply…
     .
    As you wrote, Ubisoft indeed retains the “Beyond Good & Evil” IP, not Michel Ancel. Microsoft’s only part in this is the general due diligence & certification stages they utilize for every Xbox Arcade release.
     .
    I’ve already sent a query to Ubi requesting a separate retail release, or perhaps the alternative of bundling it with BG&E 2 (when – or if- the game sees a release). You never know…
     .
    Although Major Nelson has nothing directly to do with publishing BG&E, he IS Director of Programming for Microsoft and knows quite a bit about what goes on behind-the-scenes. He’s also been nothing but helpful to the Xbox community. Again, you never know…
    .
    If you don’t take the time to ask, you’ll never get any response, be it good or bad. What’s the worst that can happen?
    .
    Lastly, regarding your suggestion to just “put it on a USB flash drive. There’s your physical format.” — that’s only really viable as a short-term solution. Notwithstanding some problematic issues involving such an idea (16GB limit = LOTS of cards in the end; a pain to store/alphabetize; possible corruption from writing/deleting; and so forth). I also dislike downloading or moving about GBs of data per game (even though I personally have a very fast broadband connection).
    .
    One big issue that come into play involves the DRM license — what happens when Xbox Live “evolves” again for the next console iteration, as it did when the original Xbox Live services were shut down in April 2010 (this is not an “if” but a “when”)? Especially if my X360 needed replacement? Even if I had a copy saved on a flash drive or DVD, how would a discontinued Xbox Live service “reauthorize” my copy to play?
    .
    It’s the same issue that now plagues the original Xbox — if I require a new Xbox or otherwise lose the DLC data on my HDD, I’ll never be able to get it again. It’s essentially gone forever.
    .
    Once upon a time, the game you bought was yours forever — your Genesis game still works on any Genesis; your SNES game works on any SNES (even the new clones released a couple years ago); PSX games on any Sony console — and the entire game was contained on that disc or cart; you didn’t have to worry about a missing bit of DLC. With DL & DLC titles, you’re really only renting the title for a few years at best — titles & content can be pulled at any time for a variety of reasons; there are limitations where you can use the content; and harshest of all, once the service is closed, should you lose the content or require a new console, it unlikely that you’ll be able to obtain those levels or games again.
    .
    Apologies, I didn’t mean to preach, but for gamers / collectors such as myself that look at the long picture, the answer isn’t as simple as “put it on a USB flash drive.” There are many other concerns that come into play with DLC, and right now — at this point in time — it creates far more problems than solutions. Some day, perhaps in a decade or two, this won’t be the case any longer (at least I hope so). Please remember this is just my own experiences & viewpoint; if the current state of DLC works for you, that’s great.
