Cloud Storage and more coming to Xbox LIVE

Following the E3 Briefing earlier today, we also announced the following features coming to Xbox 360 and Xbox LIVE Members later this year:

  • The New Dashboard. Simpler. Cleaner. Easier to navigate. With the addition of new entertainment content on Xbox LIVE and our commitment to continuously improving the overall Xbox experience, we’ve updated the dashboard with a new look and feel that makes it even more open, inviting and intuitive to navigate. All of your favorite content is categorized in a way that is easy to browse and find what you’re looking for, plus you can use voice anywhere in the dashboard to effortlessly navigate and get to what you want.
  • Bing on Xbox. We are bringing Bing to Xbox. Bing on Xbox searches Netflix, Hulu Plus, ESPN, as well as our music, video and Xbox LIVE marketplaces to find exactly the entertainment you want to enjoy. With Bing on Xbox and Kinect, you can effortlessly find the games, movies, TV shows, sports and music you want by only using your voice. You say it, Xbox finds it. The experience is now simpler than ever before.
  • Expanded Kinect Voice Support. We want Xbox LIVE members around the globe to experience the magic of Kinect’s voice recognition technology so we are committed to bringing voice to eight additional markets by the end of this year with a total of 13 markets that will have Kinect voice. We are also exploring some innovative new ways to enable the LIVE community to help us accelerate the refinement of voice models in new markets, and look forward to sharing developments on that front soon.
  • Beacons. We want to make it easy for you to connect with friends over your favorite games on Xbox LIVE, so we are introducing Beacons to the service. Beacons are a way to tell your Xbox LIVE and Facebook friends that you want to play a game on Xbox LIVE. By setting a Beacon, you tell Xbox LIVE what you want to play. Then, Xbox LIVE lets you know when friends are playing or want to play the same game. With Beacons, no matter what you’re currently doing on Xbox LIVE your friends know that it’s ok to ask you to play your Beaconed games. Imagine sending out a Beacon to let your friends know you’re interested in playing “Halo,” while watching a movie on Netflix. It’s about making it easier for you to share and discover games and multiplayer opportunities with friends on Xbox LIVE.
  • Cloud Storage for Game Saves and LIVE Profile. Here at Xbox LIVE we listen to your feedback. We are making it easier for you to sign into your Xbox LIVE account from any console at any time to access your game saves and full profile, including items such as Microsoft Points to make purchases, Achievements and friends. Cloud storage will allow you to enjoy the same great Xbox LIVE gaming experience even when you’re not in your own living room by giving you the option to store your “game saves” securely in the Xbox LIVE cloud instead of on a portable memory unit or your console’s hard drive. Gone are the days of “gamertag recovery.” Now all you need to do is sign in, no matter where you are!

[…] Major Nelson just posted all the new features that will be coming to Xbox 360 and Xbox LIVE members later this year. The new Xbox LIVE Experience includes a whole new dashboard that (IMO) mirrors what Microsoft is doing with Windows 8.  BING search will also be integrated to find all content relative to the console, an expanded Kinect voice support.  Beacons which allow you to broadcast your activity on the Xbox and Microsoft is following in Sony’s footsteps by giving us a cloud storage system for  save games and LIVE profile. They decided this wasn’t important enough to announce in the keynote? This is one of the best things to come from Microsoft at E3 so far!

Hey, they had to fit that Sesame Street and lame Tomb Raider stuff in there… Something had to get cut from the live program…  Beacons and Cloud … Maybe someone decided that these two additions would stand on their own even if they didn’t get stage time.  Now if they would have saved Sesame Street and Tomb Raider for later, would we have even heard about it?  Nope…

What’s with the Tomb Raider hating? Looked good to me.

I agree. First Tomb Raider in a long time that might be enjoyable. TR:GoL was meh…
        Sesame Street was just… weird…
This should have been stated in the presentation, at least as a back display.

TR:GoL was a good co-op game. But you can’t really compare it to a normal TR game.
But yeah, the new TR game looks interesting.

I’m most looking forward to TV coming through my Xbox. I hope eventually I can watch all my channels, not just selected services. I also hope we – UK – get as rich of a service as others.

Great news so far…minus the fact that bing is being hardcoded with no choice options.

Same thing happened with my Samsung Fascinate. Give users a choice to use Google…or make Bing a good search engine already!

You realize that it’s being used for content only available on the console, right?  It isn’t as if you’ll be searching the Internet.

Actually, I did + not + know that as where I had originally read about this mentioned web access as well.

If we’re still not gaining support for web browsing, it becomes a non issue to me. I’ve never had a problem simply browsing a-z for a selection (in fact, that’s how I find something new and interesting to purchase on most days), so I have no concerns out complaints now!😉

I’ve seen no evidence of Web access.

The upcoming UI changes to the Xbox 360/LIVE are centered around integrating both the Kinect user and non-Kinect user.

People who have Kinect and use it via the Kinect hub have been clamoring for a voice and Kinect integration in the dashboard.  The problem is I think the NXE and Kinect Hub just didn’t work well for either replacing the other.

With the addition of Search, applications like Netflix and Hulu can integrate with the search engine and provide in app search capabilities that better utilize Kinect.  One of the BIG omissions with Netflix and Hulu was a proper search function that could be used without having to pick-up the controller.

My only real issue is I don’t understand why “Bing” needs to be promoted so heavily within the console.  I think a small “Powered by Bing” logo in the search feature would have looked better.

Not to be a bearer of bad news… but just like you lose your purchased content and MS Points if you get banned, by using the cloud for your gamesaves, you’ll likely lose those too if you get banned.

So there’s a good aspect to cloud saves and a bad one.

And another as of yet unanswered question… is this a ‘gold’ only feature?  If so, what happens to my saves if I am no longer gold?

Expanded Kinect Voice Support: Does that mean that some countries in europe wil get voice support?Because the ads and packaging stated that voice controll was build in as standard here in the Netherlands.. Here in the Netherlands we havent had this function from the begining of the launche of kinect.. as we contacted support a few months ago they told me and others that we sould recieve a update for our very expansive camera to support voice. this never happend..

Yeah, I would like to see solution to having multiple xbox’s in a house and multiple profiles. Anoying that not everybody is able to play all arcade games on different xbox’s (I don’t mean at the same time) with out buying a the same game on multiple accounts.
