Xbox 360 System Update rolling out

I wanted to let you know that the team has just released a system update for the Xbox 360 over Xbox LIVE. Starting today when you sign in to Xbox LIVE you’ll receive a prompt to accept this mandatory update. If you are signed into LIVE already, you may be signed out and asked to accept the update and you’ll be back online in a few moments.

This update will increase performance and is part of our continued effort to provide the best possible Xbox LIVE experience. In this update, we are providing a fix to a color issue that some were experiencing, and it will be immediately notable in the dashboard. The fix is also being applied by partners to their apps on Xbox LIVE, which we expect to roll out over the coming months.

Thanks for finally fixing this!  And it only took you guys since the first day of the preview program to acknowledge it and patch it, when it never should have been broken in the first place.  Big props to Digital Foundry for doing the objective testing it took to prove this problem existed, since most people don’t have their TVs properly calibrated enough to notice.

Now bring on the app updates.  Netflix still looks like washed out garbage.

I use Netflix on my PS3 now. It not only has correct black levels, but it’s also in 1080p, has Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 audio, and allows you to choose which TV episode you want to play before playback starts.
It’s an uglier interface, but it works so much better.

I totally agree! I have almost quit watching it on my Xbox. I either use the PS3 or the Roku. I would rather use the Xbox because it’s on all the time anyway, lol. I just cannot handle the episode automatically playing on start up. ugh. I have 3 people in the house and we all watch different things at different times. I hope that gets fixed.

Is anyone else experiencing issues installing games post-update? I’ve tried two separate games and neither would install, the Xbox just shows the “preparation screen” indefinitely, and nothing except turning the machine off gets me back to the dashboard. It’s seriously starting to bum me out…

I am having that issue with DNF. But Portal Two and Borderlands installed without issue. I have not yet tried the rest of my library. I was going to see what else did not work before I reported it.

That’s odd: Borderlands was one that didn’t work for me, together with NFS Hot Pursuit. I’ve written to Xbox Support on Twitter, let me know if you find any more of your games refusing to install.

Does this fix the down-scaling problem too? Videos from Zune play at 1080p but videos from personal library and other sources only play at 720p even when the source material is 1080p.

Nope.  Video player on the dash still downscales 1080p videos to 720p.

The whole idea of Metro is that it’s full of glanceable info, negating the need to go in and out of apps all the time.   Xbox Metro is the opposite of that, it’s just a bunch of giant app icons mixed in with masses and masses of ads.  I assume it will be real Metro in the next Xbox…

Hi Major, does this address issues with the game installation feature since the metro dash/new disc format?  Most games now take 2-5 minutes to spin-down from full blast after starting the game after installing.  Some even never spin down in-game even when installed.  For example In Soul Calibur V after installing, the disc spins full speed for several minutes at the main menu.  Any time you return to the menu it does it again and sometime never stops.  Somethings not right.  Installs have never acted this way until these updates, and this was previously one of the 360’s best features.  It is not an isolated occurrence.  Support has not been helpful in addressing the bigger issue. Thanks.

I’d heard it was an anti-piracy feature added….however I don’t think it’s working as intended. Adding this stuff only inconveniences us, the consumer, who legitimately paid for our games. If they were to make games either the prices or more accessible piracy would lower as a whole I guarantee it.

Well, this isn’t the first update, or anywhere near the first mention of Kinect and Metro UI. So, if you didn’t think before hand or do some consumer research, shame on you. You may not be able to return it at this time, and that’s kind of on you, but there’s always a window to return anything and you should have thought of that.

Nothing here is major, and all of the major changes were announced and publicly beta’d before they were “sprung” upon anyone. It’s kind of a sob story no one wants to hear. The vocal minority will continue to cry, but the stats and the dollars speak for themselves: Metro UI and Kinect are a global smash-hit.

Perhaps he voted with his dollars before they did the said update. I don’t mind it however, I was a  early adopter back in November 2005 and if I didn’t like the direction they’ve taken it I’d be out the $500 I spent back then.

Same here. I’m actually on my 2nd XBox. I was an EARLY adopter. Personally I love the changes. That said, my point was that the Metro UI was announced like this time last year, right? It didn’t launch until December. That’s a lot of time to get information and make a decision. Unless you bought it before then, in which case you’re still in the minority if you don’t like the changes. That is, according to the most recent data.

While it may not be a problem for you, it is an issue. I have 50 or 60 games, from full to indie games that I occasionally will go back to play, even if only for 20 minutes every few months. Having to scroll to Rock Band 3 through 50 other games when my friends come round isn’t much fun, even if it does only take a minute.

Plus I don’t want to have to download a game every time I want to play it and MS has been pushing bigger and bigger HDD on the Xbox for just such a reason.

How about an update that lets Time Warner Cable users finally use ESPN3, given that Microsoft raised the price of Xbox Live Gold to reflect the different services being offered, yet we can’t use some of them.

Do you have their video service?  TWC is an ESPN partner already, but if you don’t subscribe to video, you’re out of luck.  That’s the boat I’m sailing.  Drives me bonkers that they require you to have the video service to use the app.  Why would I use the app if I already have the channel?  I’d just use my damn TV!

I’m allowed to use ESPN3 on my computer which is located 15 feet away from my Xbox, but not the Xbox. Whether or not you’re in a situation where using ESPN3 on your Xbox is better than just watching ESPN on TV is irrelevant because it’s a service offered that I’m paying Microsoft for and not getting.

Whats really pathetic now is the fact that you need Gold for practically every feature on the Xbox.  YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, 4OD, 5 On Demand.  Applications that you can access on your phone/PC/Laptop/PS3 for free, but with Xbox you need Gold.  Also people pay subs to Netflix and Sky, but hey if you want Netflix or Sky on your Xbox you must be Gold.  What next you need to be Gold to play your Xbox.   Even MS wanted iPlayer to be for Gold subs only when its part of your licence fee.

Youre paying for the servers and technology used. Most people wont be able to stream HD content without buffering issues or having to wait for it to load if you use your phone or PC. On Live however Microsoft boosts your internet connections ability by running content through filters if need be to decrease corruption.

That is why the likes of Sony suffer badly for screen tearing on multiplayer games.

You can stream 1080p on 5Mbit broadband, I would argue that most people will be around that ballpark and even if not they should handle the 720p stream so still HD.

Also the buffering problems were pretty much eradicated when Microsoft switched to Silverlight for the dashboard as it works identical to Netflix in that it seamlessly drops to a lower bitrate stream rather than trying to brute force one which your connection cannot handle.

For security reasons, I’m sure Microsoft filters everything going to your console through their own servers.  It’s only natural in our Capitalist society that the only thing they allow through for free are the ads which technically pay for themselves, and then some.
