Xbox 360 System Update

I wanted to let you know that the team has just released a system update for the Xbox 360 over Xbox LIVE. Starting today when you sign in to Xbox LIVE you’ll receive a prompt to accept this mandatory update. If you are signed into LIVE already, you may be signed out and asked to accept the update and you’ll be back online in a few moments.

What’s in it, you ask? Behind the scenes foundational improvement that will not be visually noticeable, but will help enable an easy update this Fall. There is an area that some of you may notice: We’ve added voice search for Australia and New Zealand.

If you own a Datel controller, read more here about issues after the system update.

Thanks and we will see you online.

They did a update last week that pretty much nuked a good portion of Netflix users on 360…. I wonder if they do in-house testing of these patches first.

It didn’t affect my Netflix tho, in fact because I couldn’t play a game I instead watched some shows on Netflix. Just turned on the xbox and it went right into game which it isn’t supposed to do but I guess it’s reading it now.

Indeed I forgot to mention in my post that my MW3-disc was suddenly unreadable according to my Xbox after playing online for about an hour or so…
After I took the HD out of the Xbox and inserted a USB-stick, formated it and downloaded my profile all worked well.

Also there’s a few new filter options in Game Library and when browsing Game Extras it now shows two columns of three rows instead of two by two.

Curiously no regular retail games filter despite it being in dashes up to NXE 2.0, and the Game Library/Marketplace handling is still poor. Hope this is taken on board for Metro 2.0.

Yeah, I was wondering why they are helping them. I guess I don’t mind because 360 is no longer competitive without ranking systems in halo or other games. I would hope that they don’t do this with the next console. The next console should be mod free or I might just turn to buying these mods. It’s ridiculous playing call of duty and halo with players who use these to cheat or make their avatar afk jump infinitely.

I would like to know why facebook and twitter were removed from the Social Hub? instead of Social Apps under Social Hub it is now Avatar Store. What’s more worrying is that under My Apps in the App Hub, facebook and twitter aren’t listed. The only way to access these apps is to go to the Apps Marketplace.

I was one of the lucky few that recevied the update early last week and i brought this to the attention of the XboxSupport twitter account as the TV Hub was also missing. After many attempts of clearing the cache and the update they came to the descision that this was by design choice.
@timqueenan I gotcha. That may indeed be as intended – I don’t have any specifics on why that’s the case currently. ^JD@timqueenan The social hub is by design, so that part is normal, but do you have any TV apps that you can still access? ^BB

It’s good to have the TV Hub back but removing facebook and twitter from the Social Hub and it only being accessible from the Apps Marketplace seems to be a poor design choice.

Happy to disuss further and would like to know what other people out there think of this.

little things like this just seem so random and irksome. You really got to wonder what happened in designing updates that made the things you liked and took for granted to become so askew.

I noticed it, too. The same thing with has been going on with the Kinect Fun Labs thing since last Fall, you literally have to search through everything as if to get something new and then you have to do that again anytime you want to use it. Meanwhile, there are things like “Picks” under the game Marketplace that are given a headline and separate tab. The future worries me.

      Makes no sense.

Just wanted to come home, sit down and watch some Netflix (which shouldn’t require live in the first place). Still waiting for the update to complete… This is why Microsoft will fail in the mobile marketplace and eventually everywhere. Lack of respect for the user’s priorities

You think THAT is bad, have you ever used a PS3?

Game updates (not firmware, GAME updates, those things that take 30 seconds on Xbox) on PS3 take consistently 30 minutes to complete and if its a game I haven’t played before its often an hour and a half before I actually get into the game.

This is on 40Mbit broadband, which the PS3 kindly struggles to pull 7Mbit off. If the updates are so large they should at LEAST allow my full download speed.

Conversely though, I can boot up the PS3 and load Netflix in about 1/10 of the time it takes to do the same on Xbox 360. Netflix is super slow to startup on Xbox and the picture quality isn’t as good either, and its more clunky to use.

      Like

      • Nick Piekarski

I agree, the PS3 when downloading and installing anything is horribly slow. Also agree on the new NF UI, it’s very slow and clunky. Though I have seen a few of you guys say this, but loading my “quick play” is so damn slow these days but I did notice if I was using my wireless connection it loads faster?

Make any sense? I have my systems hardwired for obvious reasons but damn my 360 is slow loading these days and it wasn’t always like that. Kind of annoying but oh well, hope it gets fixed.

True, so that gives MS I free card exploit customers, There is nothing wrong with a customer asking for better goods and services. I’m sure you’ll be happy when the service cost twice as much and has less features of use…

Are you actually asking for more goods and services or demanding them? Because if you’re asking, it means you’re willing to take “no” for an answer. If you’re demanding, you can always go to another system if you’re not happy with the conditions. It’s pretty simple. Stop complaining about nonsense.

Textures look cleaner and more detailed as well as more anti-aliasing I have noticed. Also a little more in the way of tessellation/Direct X 11 effects.

    Like

    • Alex_Atkin_UK

Are you serious? Its highly unlikely they would make any changes that would affect rendering of existing games as they would have to test every single one to make sure nothing gets broken.

      Like

      • http://WWW.Undergroundraw.com/ Undergroundraw.com

I am serious. Even the last update made textures cleaner, but this one made them cleaner with far less aliasing and I can see the tessellation (not as strong as PC) in the environment. I have played GTA 4 online since it came out so I know that game inside-out. The gameplay is also smoother too. The only thing is, when I tried to the GTA Race, it did not work! I wanted to see that to make sure because the cars usually have a lot of aliasing.

If you play games then toss them and get news ones, then I guess you won’t see it, but if you play certain games over and over again, you see it.

        Like

      • http://WWW.Undergroundraw.com/ Undergroundraw.com

I am sure it must have something to do with it’s rendering of textures as textures are just there and then applied. I like the results, it is like having a news system. I guess they do not mention when they change video enhancements because they feel that it will be too technical for us.

Too bad you did not fix the insane 3 minute plus slowdown every time you want to launch your game library or even browse a marketplace item if you have about 200 arcade games purchased on another console. Makes the console unusable in a multiconsole household. My PS3 is lighting fast under the same scenario, because they designed their DRM better.

    Like

    • Alex_Atkin_UK

The PS3 DRM works on 2 consoles MAX, I would hardly call that better.

I agree there are issues Microsoft need to fix, but the fact you can use your DRM on an unlimited number of consoles as long as you are signed in to live is certainly not a feature to downplay.

Although I suppose in a 2 console household if you do not need to use it on more, the PS3 DRM is better as it allows unlimited use on 2 consoles compares to Xbox where its unlimited on one and then only while logged in to live on any others.

Yes, but if I have a console defect, I just can just deactivate and re-active a new console for my PS3, and I would not suffer from this ridiculous slowdown because the 360 software is so dumb that it has to rescan every single arcade game on my system and compare it to a network DB almost CONSTANLY so it can tell if its a Trial or Full Game. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Just check if I am entitled to play the full game ONLY WHEN I LAUNCH THAT GAME! Don’t make me wait 3 minutes plus while you rescan my whole library every time I quit out of a game!

Restarting the console was painfully slow, did the Cache Cleanup en eventually even a format of the HD, but nothing helps. It’s HD related, because retrackting the HD and inserting and configuring a USB-stick worked normal. Is this an update-issue or just a conincidence that my HD failed last night?! My Xbox is about 3 months old…
