#XboxReveal

On Tuesday May 21st, we’ll mark the beginning of a new generation of games, TV and entertainment. On that day, we’ll be holding a special press event on the Xbox campus and we invite you to join us via the live global stream that will be available on Xbox LIVE and Xbox.com. If you are in the US or Canada, you can also watch the broadcast on Spike TV.

On that day, we’ll share our vision for Xbox, and give you a real taste of the future. Then, 19-days later at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles, we’ll continue the conversation and showcase our full lineup of blockbuster games.

We are thrilled to pull back the curtain and reveal what we’ve been working on.

Having backwards compability is needed. There are a lot of 360 games I would like to play and wouldn’t want to have to hook up my 360 just to play them.

Would be an advantage over the PS4.

Many of the people who are interested in the ps4 and went the xbox route this gen want to play the exclusives they missed, the lack of BC on the ps4 is a huge minus, and having BC on the 720 would help keep some of the people loyal.

Not to mention it would be worth it to play the exclusives people who missed the 360 didn’t play (even though the proportion isn’t as big as the ps3’s)

Who has the space to have TWO Kinects hooked up above the TV, or wants to mess around swapping between Kinect 1 & 2 all the time?

Who has the SPACE to have an Xbox 360 and Xbox Next hooked up at the same time? So that means swapping them around and that means increasing the chance of breaking the ports and cables. HDMI in particular can be fragile, the ports broke on my old TV from swapping all the time.

So there are many reasons to want a single console.

        Like

      • Jaedre

if you cant fit 2 kinects on top of the tv you need a bigger tv LOL

        Like

      • Alex_Atkin_UK

Kinect is supposed to be central on the TV, if its either side then the area its looking at will also be skewed to either side of the TV making gameplay awkward.

Plus I also have the Singstar wireless microphone transmitter on one side and Playstation Eye on the other, so space is at a premium.

There are rumours that it will have the Xbox 360 SoC in it. If not, there are other rumours that there will be an Xbox Mini that has the Xbox 360 hardware in it. If you connect the Mini to the new Xbox it is supposed to make it backwards compatible.

Why would I want to buy a Xbox mini and connect it to the new xbox instead of just keeping my god and old slim version?

        Like

      • Alex_Atkin_UK

Because if it DOES work like that, it doesn’t take up an HDMI port.

Except I believe the Xbox Mini is just going to be a full Xbox 360 needing its own HDMI port, not an expansion. So I REALLY hope they include Xbox 360 as a SoC in the new Xbox.

Well, I hope they find a way to emulate the 360. No extra costs on hardware for buyers.

        Like

      • Alex_Atkin_UK

Unlikely, it took them ages to emulate the Xbox and not all the games were supported, some of the ones who were supported didn’t run perfectly either.

Emulating Xbox 360 would be much harder, particularly as the CPU on Xbox Next is unlikely to be as big a jump over Xbox 360 as Xbox 360 was over Xbox.

What’s the problem with timed exclusive deals? Actually what’s the problem with the lack of exclusives? You get to play some games, let other people enjoy the same games. Exclusives are an abuse against the free market, free, as the freedom that the USA supposedly defends and promotes. It would be way better for consumers if console makers focused on making good consoles (hardware and features wise) and developers could focus on making good games that would work on all systems. That would promote competition on all levels and all consumers would get the most for their money. Exclusives are a way to make the market less free, more closed and a way in which consumers lose.

So no, please Microsoft, Sony and everyone out there, don’t try to milk customers, we don’t like it, don’t be evil, we won’t forget that.

      Like

      • http://www.facebook.com/josericardo.passos Jose Ricardo Passos

        Its quite the opposite way.

The console market, you see, doesn’t works the same way as the other hardware markets.
If all the consoles are able to run all the same games, nintendo would have been dead for a long time now.
Exclusives are a necessity on this market.

I know it sucks to us as consumers to have to buy more than one console, but if it was not this way, there would be no competition.
Not to mention, making a game for just one hardware makes the game so much better.
Halo 4 or Uncharted 3 wouldn’t be as good if they were multiplats.

Anyway, imagine this gen no consoles had any exclusives at all. What would have happened? Microsoft would have ruled without any competition at all.
Superior controller, one extra year on the market so people would follow their friends to play online with them, superior online capabilities (cross game chat and the such).
The ps3 and the wii would just have no reason to get sales (remember the wii had such a sucess due to motion controls right? well, it’s sucess was all based on wii sports, but that wouldn’t happen because there wouldn’t be any exclusives).

They ain’t being evil by making exclusives, they are trying to survive.

you have no clue how gaming markets work do you. exclusives are the biggest draw to one console or another, the original xbox sold because of halo, the 360 sold because people were waiting for the next halo.. the next box will sell because of fanboys

I really REALLY hope its backwards compatible too, its an instanbuy to me if it does. If not then I am definitely tempted to go with PS4 if its more powerful as rumoured.

I don’t think the new Xbox will be ALWAYS online though but will require to be online to redeem the game. I think it will work identical to Xbox 360 in that the console you first download/install the game on can work offline, all others only work when signed in to your profile.

This is also why it will block second hand sales, as effectively you are buying a digital copy of the game and the disk is only to avoid you having to download the game and appease the retailers.

The PS3 was more powerful than the Xbox yet the xbox still “performed” better due to the way they built it. I would say that if MS is waiting so long it has to be better otherwise they would have come out first and just announced a tonne of exclusives to draw people away from the PS4. Maybe you’ll even be able to run two games at once on the new Xbox if some of the rumors are correct.

It was easier for devs to port to. They need to make sure they retain that, or they could lose the third party king status.

Historically the most powerful console has never won the console generation. It always comes down to software features (including games) and price.

MS is waiting so long because they want to (in Apple style) launch a product not long after its announcement, to keep the buzz going. They did it with the 360 slim and it had very good sales from launch.
Tapeout was rumored in January and there were also a lot of rumors hanging around that the next Xbox would be available to the general public at E3. A 6 month production cycle would be enough to mass produce millions of consoles before June, but they are just rumors for now.

Running in the background for multiple apps/games is already possible on all the new Windows platforms, so yes that would be a very good assumption.

ps3 didn’t perform as well because of cell and weird ram layout, the ps4 doesn’t have this issue, and it’s why so many indie devs are flocking to the system.

I think that people mistake lots of Indie devs to a few, who are overly publicized by IGN and gaming sites to create controversy. Also the developers have probably been under NDAs for Xbox so once it is revealed we will see a lot of devs announce their new games on the platform, both indie and triple A.

        Like

      • Alex_Atkin_UK

Totally, but I think the PS4 has some compelling features, especially as the PS3 did several things half-right but had huge drawbacks preventing it delivering a good experience. For starters if they actually follow through this time with almost all games working via Remote Play on the PS Vita, that is a big plus.

Smartglass I can’t see how it could compete with that due to lacking real controls. I can’t even use the Forza Horizons GPS on my Android phone, a huge disappointment so far (although admittedly better than anything the PS3 can do).

I hope Microsoft do pull a rabbit out of their hat. For example if I can Skype chat with someone on PC while gaming on Xbox that would be pretty useful for me. However with Kinect 2 being bundled I can’t help thinking the console HAS to be less powerful to offset the cost. I don’t care which console is most popular, my priority is the one that will look and play the best. PS Eye 2 is a much much cheaper product than Kinect 2 so more money can go into the console itself. So come on Microsoft, I am waiting to be pleasantly surprised.

The indies go to PS4, Vita, PS3 and Wii U (but not Wii) because of policies that help them develop and earn money, XBLA has some of the worst policies, Team Meat had a terrible time because MS gave them a deadline, Polytron (FEZ) and Reverge Labas (Skullgirls) couldn’t update and fix their games because of high fees and file size. Small indie devs are confined to low earnings and only the region they are from and, AFAIK, only the US and Japan have them.

Also, I bet xbox is going the nintendo route: getting a big disc, but not blu ray, a proprietary of their own.

That depends who you buy your games through, on Steam and Origin yes. On other services and some disc copies, no.

The steam prices totally compensate for that. Doesn’t matter at all.

Also, with consoles you own the disc, but only have a license to the game, thats why bullshit such as on-disc dlc and online passes are allowed.

Hmmm … interesting to see what others value in the next generation console. I want them to release the best gaming experience possible on both the hardware and online services fronts.

I would much rather Microsoft spend resources on better next-gen hardware then on backwards compatibility. I am also open to eliminating used games entirely, if this means I can buy or subscribe to games through a digital store on Live, instead of having to travel to a brick&mortar retail outlet. Bonus points if those same games can be played on a Windows 8+ compatible PC. Both Steam and iOS offer gaming content through digital stores only, this is the future.

Always online could be a big win if they are developing cloud services that enhance single player experiences. I could probably count the minutes my Xbox 360 has been offline and in use since 2005 on one hand. To me, offline access is a complete non-issue.

Rumours suggest the backwards compatibility add-on needs always online, which is fine by me.
In Aus and with some line issues, I don’t always get a stable connection to Xbox servers, so I wouldn’t buy it if I couldn’t play games when I lose connection to servers.

I totally agree whatcha just said Joshua.
        – Non Backwards Compatibility (Out Wit’ The Old ‘N In Wit’ The New)
        – Eliminatin’ The Used Games Market (To A Certain Extent Will Benefit Everyone) —>😉
        I haven’t bought a used game for my Xbox 360 since 2005 ‘n I refuse to do so ‘n here’s why..
Cause when you go to GameStop or Electronics Boutique & trade your game
that you paid $65 for you don’t even get $30 you’ll be lucky to get twenty somethin’. The very next day I went to purchase a new game ‘n I seen my game that I previously just traded in sellin’ for $54. This is a proven fact even well into 2013.
This is why somethin’ must be done.. GameStop ‘n EB Games are makin’ most of the money — Microsoft only makes a small percentage outta that.
It isn’t Microsoft ripping you off it’s the used game market honestly.
        There has to be countermeasures.
I know that this is a hard time for everybody & I can understand why ppl are mad/uspset on used games butcha gotta look at this from a business prospective — any of us will be takin’ countermeasure so we’d stay a float so I respect Microsoft for that.

I also wanted to say when I was 16 I got rid of my PS2 ‘n bought my Xbox 1 on launch day NYC it was the best choice I’ve ever made. PlayStation 2 was a mistake ‘n Xbox corrected that mistake. *I’ll never make that mistake ever again.*

I back Microsoft ‘n support ’em the fullest

eliminating the used game market hurts everyone. software sales will plummet and the game retail market as it is is quite frankly broken, the profit margin for retail on a new game is almost nothing no used games and I wouldn’t be surprised if gamestop bestbuy and even amazon stop selling the products. in comparison a video game might earn $2 for the store net profit while something like an HDMI cable will earn much more ( a $20 HDMI cable will be bought by a store for like $2 at most)

Restaurants sell food at about a 300% markup yet video games, something people don’t buy much are is less than 4% profit, a company cannot stay in business like that.

I understand completely Curtis ‘n I respect everyone’s opinions but if there’s countermeasures it should be addressed in an orderly fashion.
Whereas Microsoft ‘n GameStop will come to an agreement..
This won’t only benefit GameStop, Microsoft ‘n their investors but also us gamers.
At the end of the day I’m a gamer just like everyone on this site.

I can buy used games fairly cheaply, through private channels (eg ebay) rather than stores but plenty of stores about offer good prices.

If we end up with now 2nd hand market, MS/game publishers get to fix the price of their games. Games I can pick up for just a few pounds now are on the market place at 20+ still.

All that will happen is gaming gets more expensive.

It won’t be backwards compatible since this time round it will be using bluray disks, i believe u will be able to play used games, the 1 disk per console was a method Sony had managed to create which caused a big scare but will not be implemented, as for the always online DRM its rumored that it might have it, if it does then MS are stupid while the world is pretty much connected as it is, if our Internet goes we can still play our console but with the always online if any thing were to happen to our interent or at MS end then they would be nothing more than a flashy paperweight and since half the worlds Internet isn’t that stable they will lose out on so many customers.

Contrary to what happened with the PS4 when some of the features leaked, MS apparently won’t listen to us. Since Paul Thurrott was right with the reveal date, like all the media are saying, he might be right with everything else. If you look back to the history of the XBOX, you’ll see they didn’t listen to anyone and succeeded because of it. With the original XB, people didn’t want to pay for access to XBOX Live and wanted dial-up too. With X360, we didn’t want to keep paying for XBOX Live and didn’t want DLCs and digital formats and an “optional” HDD. Since we have dealt with it, I guess MS is pretty confident we will deal with it again. Just one thing for MS, if you won’t, I mean, since there won’t be BC and used games, drop the BD/DVD/CD drive, what would be the point, if we will end up recycling after its use in one console, save the plastic, instead just issue cards with redeem codes if you still want to make physical collectibles. Cardbord is easier to recycle than BD´s.

Agreed, backwards compatibility makes it an instant purchase. No backwards compatibility means wait a couple years til I’m sure I’m done with my older games. I think for a lot of people, it’s a burden to keep multiple systems hooked up to your TV. I only want one device and I want it to play my current and older games.

100% agreed BUT WAIT! That might not be the case. I’ve already primed and prepared myself for the BAD news…remember that unfaithful day the announcement about Windows Phone 7s not being upgradable to 8?..after all the wishful thinkings, warnings, pleading and hoping for the best on tech forums?. Microsoft is kinda now known for giving us unexpected and undesirable news, so don’t hope to hear all three of your features being met. For me, I’m expecting No backwards compatibility, can’t play used games and will be always online….it’s sad and painful to me but I’ve known Microsoft since Windows Mobile and Win 95 days and that’s the news they gonna give. Prepare yourselves and accept it so that day (May 21) doesn’t become a bad day for you.

For the first third of Mass Effect 3 I controlled my squad with voice and it worked about 95% with sometimes notable latency. After the first third the fights were intense enough that “pausing the game” by bringing up the skill wheel was just too darn useful. In other words, going back to the normal squad control method gave me time to think about what I was doing.

If they cut the latency by 50-75% and have an HD camera as rumored, it will be crazy good.
