Xbox One and Used Games

We know there is some confusion around used games on Xbox One and wanted to provide a bit of clarification on exactly what we’ve confirmed today. While there have been many potential scenarios discussed, today we have only confirmed that we designed Xbox One to enable our customers to trade in and resell games at retail.

Beyond that, we have not confirmed any specific scenarios.

Another piece of clarification around playing games at a friend’s house – should you choose to play your game at your friend’s house, there is no fee to play that game while you are signed in to your profile.

Good luck. Despite that quote being made up, your quote doesn’t require an always on feature. It simply says you’d need broadband to play online, which the current generation already demands.

Every time a new console is announced, it summons a peculiar blend of anxiety and simmering rage from the gaming public. A recent poll by Voucher Codes Pro asked UK gamers what they thought of Microsoft’s big reveal of the Xbox One, so we can precisely quantify that cocktail of emotions. The results are mixed, with a distinct undertone of disappointment from the responses.

According to the UK, the full living room experience isn’t what customers are looking for – they just want to play games.

Of those who responded negatively, the common thread seemed to be a dislike for the multimedia approach. 47% stated that a “game console should stick to gaming,” reinforced by 39% who said they “didn’t care about its television capabilities.” The press conference that revealed the Xbox One received some direct criticism, with 42% of participants wishing that they knew more about the console’s line-up of launch titles. Other complaints ranged from disinterest in Skype to the somewhat petty argument that the console’s aesthetics weren’t “exciting” enough.

I think a good measuring stick is that Sony’s stock went up 8% right when the Xbox conference started talking about TV. And kept going up.

And Microsoft’s went down and down during their own conference

      Like

      • Shaniqua1990

Sony has been going up for the past year. They went up 8% because a hedge fund which owned a significant portion of sony shares was pressuring them to spin off their entertainment division, and the board just had a meeting. Not that I’d expect a 12 year old girl to have any knowledge of how financial markets work. Hint: They don’t revolve around trivial video gaming news.

MSFT went down 0.66% after posting the highest share prices in 5 years. But of course in your mind everything revolves around video games.

        Like

it was -0.66%, that’s negligible change in stock prices, especially a blue chip slow mover like MSFT.

MSFT shares were at a 5 year high anyways. You act like the Xbox division which has bled MSFT money for over a decade makes up a significant portion of their business. MSFT has more cash than the xbox division makes in revenue.

Dylan, I’m my hardest not to call your obsessive hanging on to a 39 cent drop the signs of a metal defective, but I’ve owned MS stock for the last 5 years now. The price is higher by about $10 from when I started buying, this is despite the win8 hatred, the Office subscription debacle, and the Windows Phone failures.

Your analysis of the stock dropping is pointless, MS and Sony are more than their entertainment divisions, the correction means nothing. Only panties in a wad fanboys are getting all angry about this console, I don’t like the implications either, but at the end of the day, we’re all going to buy one. We’ll probably buy a PS4 too. You aren’t going to get a call from morgan stanley any time soon begging you to come work for them because of your spot on analysis about the negligible drop. Now had it dropped $5-10, that might be something, but it dropped more when Steve Jobs died, what’s your opinion of that?

        Like

      • Dylan

You’re mistaken if you think lots of people are going to be buying the console.

Every online poll on the internet is against everything the Xbox is doing. It will sell, but it won’t be anywhere near their original projections. (if they do the proposed policies)

The criticism has gone viral, twitter is ablaze, and social media has spread.
I have had an Xbox since the original.
I will not get one if there’s required online (which there is), blocked used games, forced kinect, etc

And the WII U sales jumped 875% in Britain after the Xbox conference!

        Like

      • John Albert

And you’re mistaken about everything you say. The number of people who read and post on blogs is insignificant compared to the number of people buying the system. You obviously don’t understand how percentages work. The WiiU jumped 125% in early april just due to an unofficial price drop and a few games being released.

Grow up and learn how the world works before posting such crazy raving claims.

My issue is with the extra fee to play on a separate console. I own 3 xboxes but usually only buy one game which I share with my kids who each have there own console. I’m not going to buy 3 copies of each game. Or I’m not going to sign my profile in every time they want to play. So that means I can’t play when they do.
Microsoft needs to think this through a little more. Considering there policy would limit me to only buying one console, not three.
If Xbox does this and PS4 doesn’t, it will be a no brainer for me. Even though I have never really like Playstation…. I’ve had an xbox since day 1…

    Like

    • Adam

That’s a little flawed, you shouldn’t be able to play with anyone on 2 different consoles without owning 2 discs, even with the xbox 360. Sure, you can share said Xbox360 game among the consoles but either way you can’t play on 2 with 1 disc. I get your reasoning but that example is kind of folding in on itself.

      Like

      • watkins

How is that logic flawed? He didn’t say play on 2 different consoles at the same time. He bought the game and it should just work wherever he takes it.

For everyone signing the petition, I don’t think you should be focusing on the things such as Kinect – this is hardly a big issue – the issues we should be focused on are the ones that we all know we don’t want: Online requirement and the Use games fee policy. I think that if we get these removed successfully and nothing else, the Xbox One will be 1000% better and more enjoyable.

i agree, Kinect needs to NOT be mandatory. read the comments, if it breaks, your system is useless till you buy another one, who knows how much they will go for, or you send it to be fixed. Plus it being on 24/7 is NOT ok

        Like

      • Adam

My point is, everybody, that would you rather have the used-games fee dropped and the always online/24 hour thing removed, but still have to have the kinect? Or remove the kinect and have those other ridiculous policies and features. I’ve got my priorities and they’re focusing on removing the 2 things I mentioned, the Kinect issue is secondary is light of the other issues.

No it won’t be dropped, those of us who think like this are considered to be peasants and therefore are not welcome in the XBOX ONE world, so says Shaniqua1990, the real voice of MS.

Agree with you 100%. We all have our kinects hooked up all the time anyway, does anybody actually disconnect it?

I do, it is only connected when I am playing a Kinect game. however back to Adam’s point…yes, I would accept the kinect always on if they got rid of the forced installs, used fees, daily check ins to the internet, and the need to be online to install a game. They are a more serious issue to me.

        Like

      • TheRickshaw

And if your system breaks, your system is useless, so why worry specifically about the kinect?
I suppose you blow out (or would blow out) the pilot light on your furnace and disconnect power (or remove the batteries) from your thermostat several times a day to save energy.

        Like

      • slobodan jukic

Why is kinect an issue? Put tape over it and there you go. As for use of it being up to game devs whats new there or diff than in x360? Game cds clearly say For Kinect and if you don’t want to use it don’t

        Like

      • Assassin

you can’t just put tape on it an if it’s that damn easy to just cover it, then why the hell do i have to have it at all? when I DONT EVEN WANT IT. you don’t have to use Kinect with 360. So why is it being pushed so hard to be used for Xbox One?

all we’re is saying is, don’t FORCE it on us. Let us choose if we want it or not. Just because MS wants it and wants to sell that as it’s ‘thing’ does not mean everyone want’s it, and i bet you if you did a poll, more people would not want Kinect than actually want it.

Well just like you get headset or as batteries for controller doesn’t mean that you have to use it. Why are you so affraid of something new and if it works great and easier to navigate you’ll probably use it for certain things too. For instance one thing stuck in my head the ability to say the name of the channel instead of searching for one. They have not stated this. Anybody can play it on the first xbox, but they are not being clear about subsequent boxes. Their wording makes it look like you will not be able to put it on 10 xboxes just because you have your gamertag on that box. If that was the case people would just log in once to all their friends xboxes and then share all their games.

You may also want to check the comment section of IGN, Eurogamer and a few other places. That’s exactly where most hardcore gamers are, and I’m pretty sure that’s not just a few thousand people.

my whole point is every time something new happens people scream the same exact thing and are always the first to rush out and make it an instant success. their is a reason 80% of Xbox owners are from the US. its sad people will fork out cash to this pathetic company just because its new tech that aint even new… wow their new XO can daisy chain the existing cable box into the new console. they are using an updated IR blaster.

like i said, people will flock to it after they announce all the games at E3, all will be forgiven let alone forgotten and everyone’s wallets will be pumping out that cash once again! Xbox targeted the right audience back when they made people pay for online service. they weeded out the people that wont blindly pay them retarded fee’s that even game developers don’t charge access to. they built their entire system around a core group of gamers that are like ATM’s. people say its only $5 a month. $60 a year. great i say, now that $300 system just cost you 1100 over the life span, not to include games.

By the way, did you know that you’ll need an additional HDMI compliant cable box to use some of the TV functionalities?

most up to date set top boxes already do. if you don’t have one just contact your local provider and ask for an updated box. it will only cost you a small fee to do so. otherwise short your current box out and call support saying your cable tv is not working and they will come out to check it and then replace it with a newer box 😀

Did you know that in many countries, cable providers give HD services as premium services?
XBOX ONE is not only design with subscription TV viewers in mind is also only designed with the US in mind.

it’s called a descrambler because cable companies encrypt their cable signals

In that case is a cable decrypter, it used to be scrambled with analog signals, I guess your masters didn’t program you with that information today. What are your orders today? Yesterday was to call us everyone “peasants”, before that you called us “pirates”.

According to MS spokes-entity, Shaniqua1990, we are considered peasants and MS and Shaniqua1990 do not want peasants using the XBOX ONE. Hardcore gamers are welcomed as long as they have all the means to deal with the large money consumption and 24/7 surveillance.

Just read retailers wanting to sell used X1 games will need to be linked to MS servers so the games code can be removed from the gamers profile and so MS and publishers get a cut.

So this is what Phil Harrison is saying:
“Harrison: Just like today, if you have a game disc that you buy from the store, you can play that game. The game is now installed to the hard drive. Any user who is associated with that Xbox One can play that game. I can give that game disc to my son and he can go and take it to another machine inside the house and play it on that machine. Just like today, only one of us can play it at any one time.
The difference, though — the benefit of Xbox One is that that data can roam with me. I can go to my friend’s house. I can log in as myself into his machine. I can then play that game on his machine, and while I’m logged in, he can play it as well.

that anyone in your household can play the game on any xbox without the disc after you install it (albeit only 1 copy can be played at once, JUST LIKE TODAY)?
That you can log on anywhere in the world and download ur game and just start playing?

        sounds awesome

no the simple fact that i cant pirate the game. now i have to charge friends an hourly fee to borrow me, my game and my time just for them to play it. does m$ think im just going to give friends open access to my live account? heck no. i want a piece of that $7 billion cash crop also.

ok i am actually a little upset, i was hoping it would have access to skynet.

hey the one thing they could actually do for us is create an app for the kinect that will set off an alarm if it detects an intruder or someone it doesn’t recognize . they did say it will recognize us and know what we like and don’t like…. well i don’t like intruders watching my tv or playing my Xbox’s while im not home.

its ok if M$ watches and listens through kinect i trust them completely. especially since we have laws that protect our civil liberties and right to privacy. well kinda, i mean the law was just changed recently saying digital privacy of consumers and what they do/use/like can be monitored and sold to third party’s to include corporations as well as law enforcement. and since you would be recorded digitally its perfectly legal for them to stop by once and awhile to say “HELLO DAVE” in the eyes of the law.

lol, no no no im just joking.

but the app thing would be cool because i could truly have an all in one system then. lets see….a home alarm system, DVR, a spy camera/nanny cam, Blu-Ray player, games console, telephone, internet, text’s, cable tv, music player, picture sharer/viewer, kinect for exercise…”very important” which brings me to no more getting up becuse YOUR THE REMOTE! “XBOX ON….. XBOX SWITCH CHANNELS FOR ME”!!! fantasy league for the NFL… holy Swiss cheese! the list just keeps going and going…. and the best part is it all comes wrapped in a old Sony betamax case!
