The only thing holding me back from buying a Xbox isn’t the price, but the manditory Kinect. It’s such a scary anti-privacy device.
I’m a Sony guy. I had the PS1, PS2 and PS3. But I would ignore the PS4 for an Xbox One WITH OUT the Kinect. I really like the exclusives Microsoft has. But with the Kinect I’m just going to buy a PS4. And I’ll just hope Microsoft will get their senses back and release an Xbox One Slim somewhere in the future WITH OUT the Kinect.

I pains me to say it but after years of supporting the Xbox brand I am officially jumping out. Sony won my business last night on the simple fact that they are respecting the Right of First Sale. If I buy it, it’s mine. Until you return to that model and ditch your daily check ins I cannot support your console out of principle.

it will help if they bring backwards compatibility back to the xbox one drop the policies and continue as normal like the 360

they could also provide a code to allow you to play offline, you buy the original game and it comes with a code…I mean there´s a lot of thing they could do…

        Like

      • Jedi Dna

No it won’t! Any code needs a server to authenticate it, otherwise its useless… MS should do like Sony! Should Hear and respect its customers making the disc itself to be one and only key to the game!

And then what? You give the game away to a friend so you can play offline while they get a free game. XboxOne does not use the game disc at all after the install. Not even for a ‘do you really own it’ check.

I could deal with DRM if it didn’t mean that I would have to repeatadly by the same game for different consoles. I like to own multiple consoles so I can be playing one game while somebody else is playing something else in a different room. If they give me multiple licenses maybe this problem goes away.

        Like

      • jlh

You can do that because you have a shared game library. You can play on your main console while someone else plays on their account on another console from the same game library.

I really don’t think DRM is going anywhere. The console is built to multitask (search in one game while playing another, etc.) the only way you can do that is if the games are run from the harddrive without a disc in the drive check, ala 360. So to make sure people aren’t just installing the games and then giving them to a friend so they can both play it at the same time they needed some type of DRM.

Now maybe the whole idea was crappy from the start, but I see how they arrived at it. Doesn’t mean I like it.

      Like

      • BostonSup

That makes sense. They could change the software to force the game to be in the drive in order to play (like how it is in the Xbox360). That is the only fix that they could do. But then again, they would probably have to remove features. They screwed up on this. They should have said what you just said or keep it status quo. Now they either look greedy or they remove features… they put themselves between a rock and a hard place.

        I never heard that…

I think you can’t load 2 games at the same time and switch between the two, I think that’s only available for 1 game + apps.

They showed it off at the conference and it was very cool. The lady (sorry forgot her name) was playing Ryse while the system was searching for a KI match. When an opponent was found it switched instantly to KI. Being able to jump in and out of games like that is fantastic. They probably should have shown more of it but the community gets so impatient when they try to show cool tech stuff.

    Can’t wait for Flashback!

Sorry for hijacking this thread, though, but I don’t know where else to ask this question: are the prices of Xbox One and PS4 games going to be the same?

If they are, then this makes a mockery oh what Microsoft has been doing and is one final kick in the teeth for the consumers. Shouldn’t game developers be getting more per sale per Xbox One game because of the anti-piracy and used game restrictions? Let us assume that Xbox One and PS4 games require an equal amount of time and money to develop, but the developers earn more for each of their Xbox One games sold, so why then should Xbox One gamers have to pay the same price? It’s blatantly unfair.

If the response to this argument is that the developers don’t make more per game on the Xbox One then why on earth have these measures been introduced? The only argument for these measures (i.e. combatting piracy and second-hand sales) is the very same argument that justifies lower game prices for the Xbox One.

Microsoft has already stated that they do not get these fees. It’s up to the developer to charge them and it’s not mandatory. So how would that effect prices? Wholesale is about $30 – $35 a game and the rest is made up at retail.

      Like

      • DudBug

Ok, maybe I have misunderstood things but I was under the impressions that the new measures would cut down on the number of second-hand sales and that the reason for this was, presumably, so that more brand new games would be bought and don’t Microsoft and the publishers profit from this? If Microsoft has introduced this for the sake of the publishers then shouldn’t they be fighting our corner so that the extra income which these measures are designed to generate (otherwise, why bother with them?) gets passed on to us?

Because of Steam, I actually believe Microsoft when they say this came about from working ‘with’ developers. Meaning developers wanted this on consoles too. Sony is only hurting themselves by caving to gamers that will gladly hack their console and not pay for anything. I don’t expect prices to come down, but we should expect bigger and better sales on older titles. I like Steam, but if they didn’t have those sales, they would nothing. Where consoles have had no problem selling games at $59.99.

i haven’t seen any hint of information that confirms or denies the prices of next gen games. from a business perspective, it does not make any sense to have multiplatform games with different prices on consoles. therefore exclusives should also have the same price tag in my honest opinion, so all new games will cost the same.

I think you’ll find a game is developed for a particular platform, and that is where the longest amount of development time is spent. Once complete, or almost complete, the game is just ported to the other platforms, this doesn’t take anywhere near as long to do as the initial development (where the real work is).

Now that the One, PS4 and PC are all running x86 chips, the porting of the games got somewhat easier than it used to be when there was x86, PPC and CEL to contend with. What this is likely to mean is that the developers will save a more time and money getting the game to the other platforms.

As far as piracy goes, if MS’s measures work out, then piracy will be reduced, and therefore developers will see sales on the One increase, in comparison to other platforms. This should in turn encourage them to develop more games and content for the One. On the other hand, you may find pirates are put off by MS’s measures, and cause an increase in sales in the PS4 (or PC), where it may be easier to pirate games.

I have a suggestion…why not to provide a code when you buy a game to allow you to play offline, the only thing you have to do is to enter into your account and activate it, you could do it from a lan house, I don´t known… anywhere that has internet…then you can travel and play it if the place you go doesnt have internet, or at home without internet…

There has been discussions of codes for active duty personnel. The problem ultimately comes down to the fact the XOne isn’t designed to run games from the disc at all (or even check the disc). The integrated strategy that allows you to be playing one game while be matchmaking in another game doesn’t allow it. So if they gave you a code what is to stop you from just giving the disc away and then your buddy gets the game for free, minus the offline code sure, but he still gets to play and the publishers are still out of money.
