Xbox One Smart Match

Earlier today I chatted with Chad Gibson, Principle Group Program manager for Xbox Live Gaming features and Mike Lavin, Sr. Global Product Marketing manager for Xbox Live on our live E3 broadcast. They outlined how the new Smart Match feature works on Xbox Live. Last week, before E3, I had a long conversation with Micheal Dunn from our team who leads the development on the new Smart Match system. I asked him to sum up what his team is putting together for all of us

Asynchronous Matchmaking

I’m Micheal Dunn, Program Manager on Xbox Live Services. I love how console games and especially co-op games bring people together to “spend quality time.” It’s great to play with friends and family online, but it’s fun sometimes to try a new “bar” so to speak and meet new people to play with online. I’ve met people from all over the world while playing on Xbox Live.

We all have better things to do than wait for people to show up to play a game. It would be great if I could start up the flight sim game, see if anyone is online to play, put in my play request and then switch to something else while I wait for people to show up. That is what Smart Match on Xbox One allows people to do. It makes it easy for a title to create a match request and then “untether” me so I don’t need wait in the title while the match search is processing. I can switch to reading a quick social blog or watch a viral video and when the match is ready Xbox One tells me to pull me back into the title to play.

The new Smart Match service allows titles to change their match model from traditional peer-based host searching for players typical in Xbox 360 to now completely untethered cloud-based. The example I gave was for a low population title like a flight sim game, but there are also great results for the more popular shooter and sports titles too.

You will be able to launch a popular shooter or sports title and see the “typical wait time” for different online game modes. For example, imagine a match area for a quick match] that might have a wait time of 1 minute, and then another match area in the title for “match by downloadable content (DLC)” with typical wait time of 7 minutes. Chances are you’d never wait in a game for 7 minutes to play online, you’d just make do with “quick match” and lowest common denominator DLC. With Xbox One titles, you can instead pick the longer “match by DLC” option if you please, see it might take 7 minutes to find a match that night, and switch to another task while Smart Match in the cloud is searching for you. You end up with a much more enjoyable match result since you get to play with people with similar DLC versus just the lowest common denominator levels in the base title. You get to make the most use the latest map or car you just bought to keep the game play fresh and interesting, versus just going into quick match with the same options every night.

With Beacons in Xbox 360 you could set a toast to tell other friends of your desire to play a specific game online. Smart Match on Xbox One goes way beyond that to help you tap into the full player population for a title, versus just the friends you know, and means you skip waiting in a match search screen in the title. This is a true departure from consoles that don’t have a way to switch between tasks quickly. Plus over time Smart Match empowers Xbox One titles to unlock many more ways to play online without the penalty of segmenting the available pool of people each night to match with. This same pattern depending on the title can include player attributes to search for such as very specific skill or social elements like spoken language or even people of similar age. You will see lots of new play styles open up for online play as titles start to experiment more with match types, without you needing to be stuck waiting for players to show up.

With Xbox One, I’m looking forward to putting in my match request in for a super special online play style or specific DLC needed for a play mode, then kicking back and letting Xbox Live do the work to find me a good person to play with while I practice my mad skills. Here’s an example of playing Ryse and then getting a match ready toast to jump into Killer Instinct online play that was shown in Monday’s E3 presentation.

Reputation
You can usually tell a family member to stop crunching on corn chips in your ear or yakking on the cell phone while they play with you. With a stranger you meet online it doesn’t always turn out that way though. Sometimes you meet someone online that decides it’s cool to hum Top 40 songs as they go through a match or sometimes meet someone that can’t seem to avoid swearing at everything that #$%^ happens to them. The majority of Xbox Live players are polite online and know how to socially adjust to the people they are playing with, but there are some bad apples you run into that just seem to like to cause trouble. With Xbox One we’ve built a new social reputation model to help expose people that aren’t fun to be around, and also create real consequences for those few bad apples that continue to harass our good players.

Sometimes it’s hard for strangers to know what “polite” means with different social norms and backgrounds, and even harder when you aren’t in the same room face to face with someone. You have few social cues to rely on, and typically a stranger sees no real reason to listen to your complaint about their behavior. We all care a lot about behavior on Xbox Live and player feedback options in Xbox One allows you to help educate those who don’t seem to follow good social gaming norms. We simplified the feedback mechanism also to be less of a “survey” and more direct feedback options, even linking things in like block or mute player actions into the feedback model.

All of the feedback from player’s online flow into the reputation service to evaluate a players online social reputation. The more hours you play online without causing others to have a horrible time the better your reputation will be, similar to the more hours your drive without an accident the better your driving record and insurance rates will be. Most players will have good reputations and be seen as “green” good players you’d enjoy playing with. Even those good players might receive a few player feedback reports each month and that is OK. Xbox Live is looking to identify players that are repeatedly disruptive on Xbox Live. We’ll identify those players with a lower reputation score and in the worse cases they will earn the “avoid me” reputation. Looking at someone’s gamer card you’ll be able to quickly see their reputation.

Smart Match sees their Xbox Live rep too and when a person’s social reputation gets low enough the service will only match those low reputation players with similar low reputation players. This gives them the benefit of playing with people just like them. Ultimately we want to help encourage good behavior between strangers. By the way, before a user ends up at this extremely low reputation level we will have sent many different alerts to the user reminding how their social gaming conduct is affecting lots of other gamers. The chart includes examples of the reputation score that will be seen in the gamercard.

clip_image004

This reputation system will evolve as we track the feedback we get from actual players and titles, plus add more consequences for bad apples that we want to stop #$%^ crunching on corn chips in your ear. All you need to do is block or report players that are abusive, cheat, or causing various amounts of non-fun mayhem and their social reputation will reflect that. We’ll keep the good friendly players together with other good friendly people, and keep a seat for the bad apples in their own special place. Our team and I built this for all of you and we hope you like it!

No one cares about this when in a few years Microsoft can turn off the Xbox One servers and our console and all our games (both digital and disc) become worthless because the system can’t check in.

This is just one of many several issues with the Xbox One’s anti-consumer policies.

    Like

    • http://twitter.com/clanMOH {MOH} Regulators

You realize they could turn that off at anytime with an update right?

      Like

      • http://raptr.com/unscleric/about UNSCleric

And how would they do that? It’s tied to the hardware. They turn that off and all games are free.

If Microsoft wants to promise to do that, then I would be much happier though, even with the existing issues.

No, it’s not tied to the hardware, it’s a simple thing to deactivate it. They’ve already said it’s at their discretion to turn it on or off, we’re headed for a completely digital future, where all games will be tied to accounts, it might not be what you want, but it’s a reality.

I don’t care how it works, I’m all for connected stuff, but if I hold a disc in my hand and have a working console, then I want to be able to play it, even 15 years from now. I’m not paying $60 for rentals, especially with Gamefly not an option with the Xbox One.

        Like

      • http://twitter.com/clanMOH {MOH} Regulators

Microsoft will probably partner with someone to get game rentals out there, or offer a demo of every game. I highly doubt we’ll see new consoles after these, everything will be cloud based, and with 300,000 servers to start, I wouldn’t worry much about it.

Honestly, like I said before, they can just switch off authentication if they do decide to come out with a new console 10 years from now.

I don’t doubt they “could” do that with a software update, but I don’t see them actually doing it. Just look at recent interviews with Mattrick, still defending that stuff “if you don’t want it, go buy a 360”.. yeah, that’s how you should talk to potential customers -_-

I still remember people complaining about the original Xbox because it only had a broadband modem, and not a dial up. It’s the future, playing online enhances gaming, 90% of all games have an online component, and more and more games offer no offline modes whatsoever.

Steam, IOS and other devices have similar concepts. I doubt they turn it off as well, but I do think they’d turn it off as opposed to just shutting everyone out of their games.

I’m an only child and don’t share my games either, but I need to know that Microsoft plans to not turn their back on the servers once they’re not the newest thing anymore. Zune, original Xbox, MSN Spaces, Windows Live Gaming, and many other things have been shut off and forgotten.

      • http://twitter.com/clanMOH {MOH} Regulators

Zune was just transferred and re-named. The original Xbox servers needed to be shut down so the Xbox 360’s could be upgraded, but you can still play original Xbox games on the original Xbox or Xbox 360.

If you believe they’d just shut off millions of peoples consoles and games, I am not sure what to think, I don’t think that’d be the case at all, they would lose everything. As I said, they can always shut off the feature.

How don’t they support me back? I buy all types of games, I remember buying two copies of Alan Wake just to help support them. I buy indie games, PC games, every kind of game new.

When games have good sales, we get sequels and games we want. Had 2+ million people not pirated Alan Wake, maybe we’d be getting a full sequel for that game, or had used copies not been able to be used…so many studios have closed recently, and used/pirated games are a huge reason why.

      • usrev

believing “omg piracy” just shows you are a sheep.

first off, a pirated game isn’t a lost sale, so you can’t take raw numbers, then you have to factor in: the people who ust wanted to try it, the people who already had the 360 version but wanted to play on pc, the people who wanted to see the hilarious piracy thing (if you play a pirated version you have an eye patch on like a pirate)
factoring all that in few people pirated the game that would have bought it to begin with

Next the xbone is a console, console piracy is small time for every 1 pirate there are 1000’s of real sales. to honestly think you are making the right choice with xbone because it tries to prevent piracy is foolish.

the only point to this DRM is to make sure you don’t own the games and have to buy new MS wants their cut of the new game sale.

All you are doing i bending over and saying”well I didn’t want to own my games anyway I just want to rent them”

Also Piracy has gone down 10% in the last year, and the EPA reports that they’ve never been more efficient, or as fast at catching it as they are now.

That’s why the Publishers don’t use it as a scapegoat anymore. It’s been proven that it isn’t a really serious issue.
The new scapegoat is used games.

Here’s the thing, you have to look at the larger picture. I also generally do not trade in games or buy them used. However, when I see young people or not so fortunate families struggling then I need to ask what is the real purpose of all of this nonsense? Microsoft is assuming people like me will continue old methods and not notice what is happening. Well, we are taking notice and I do not like the method and I will not participate in that business model.

And sold out? Not where I am living. Hundreds if not thousands still available.

Gaming is a hobby, it costs money. Families can still share games, in fact the Xbox One’s share feature is pretty impressive, multiple Gold Accounts on the same Xbox, 10 family members can play your games from the cloud or whatever, I think it’s fine.

If you can afford $400-$500 for a console, you should be able to support the developers who spend years of their lives making the games. I always support developers, never trade in games or consoles.

This is a VERY important point, Larry.

People tend to leave bad feedback, but NEVER leave a good feedback.

This is specially true on 1vs1 games like FIFA or Street Fighter, where losers tend to feel the need to leave a bad feedback like “Unsporting conduct” as a jab back at the one who just defeated them.

This is the mistake the Feedback System on the Xbox 360 made, and I sure as hell hope you don’t commit it again.

If you choose to buy digital only, like I prefer, Microsoft is actually less restrictive. Sure there is the 24 hour check in, but my son in college two hundred miles away can access my games library, my other son in high school can go to a friends house and access my games library, etc. What if I buy a digital game from Sony? Kids, you’re out of luck

I know your argument will be, ‘yeah, but digital sucks, so I will buy all of my games on disc.’ See, I could do that too, but if my son borrows my game, and he’s two hundred miles away, it’s going to be quite some time before I can play it again. I buy one digital game on the X-Box One, my whole family wins!

I am an Xbox supporter to the core. I have been for 8 years, and I have 150K GS to back it up.

Larry, please tell the powers that be to drop the DRM. This is me doing my part as a consumer to voice my feelings to you, so that you can understand me on a personal level. I have both the Xbox One and the PS4 pre-ordered. I do not intend to purchase both, but I will definitely get one. I need MS to tell me in the next few days if they plan on making DRM changes similar to Sony’s model. I know Sony is being a little deceptive in their presentation, and online passes are likely to make a comeback, you still look like the bad guys and people are running from the Xbox One. You will sell all initial shipments, but will struggle to fin new customers shortly after if you don’t fix this.

It is important to me that you hear me…

I had nothing against your DRM restrictions. I don’t buy used games, and I’m
always on LIVE. So, I have nothing to worry about. However, I am not most
gamers. Most gamers like to lend out games to friends – not give them to them.
I was expecting Sony to follow suit and all would be good, and we as consumers
can realize that the developers just want a larger cut for more expensive
development. What Sony did tonight was extremely “ballsy”. They have taken the
risk of upsetting the developers, aka the hand that feeds. From a consumer
standpoint, you guys got obliterated by Sony’s lack of any DRM whatsoever. That
means that for a cheaper price, gamers can buy a PS4 and loan whatever games
they want at any time to anyone they’d like, as well as sell them to whoever
they want. You, at this time, do not give us this option.

If this DRM stuff doesn’t change, I am afraid your new console will flop
harder than Wii U (okay, maybe not that bad). I don’t see the Xbox One standing
against the PS4 if you don’t completely drop the DRM, and I will cancel my
preorder and get a PS4 to move with the herd, so to speak. I like your games
better, but I need you to give me the impression that you’re going to do what’s
best for your longevity. Drop the DRM and make some deals with the devs that
Sony just spit at to rally their cheerleaders with a 10 minute montage of smart
remarks targeted right at you. Your guys games destroyed the games that Sony had to show at E3, but they won due to instilling purchasing confidence in potential customers. On the Xbox forums you have many current Xbox owners jumping ship.

    Sincerely,

A concerned fan – Dexter MorganMO

Killer Instinct, Halo, and many more exclusives along with the superior controller will attract people. They just have to lighten up. I think Sony just made a lot of developers mad, and this may end up hurting them in the long run if MS plays this just right.

Anyway, how many of you run around with your smart phones connected, your laptops connected, your gaming pc connected, etc? God forbid someone makes a console that is connected. At least Mattrick shoots straight. He says if your connection sucks, this console is not for you. Now he could have weaseled around the issue, and of course he would have been blasted for that too. Hey, you don’t like the message? Fine. However, the messenger is being honest, something that can’t always be found in the other camp. How’s that party chat coming ps3 fans? Ouch! That wasn’t nice.

Sony is saying all the right things, but considering they sometimes lie through their teeth, especially when it comes to what their consoles can and can’t do, well, time will tell I guess. Hey, look on the bright side, Sony said the PS4 will have party chat. 😛

And lets not say microsoft is a scumbag and sony is good guy. sony is a good guy in terms that it alows you to trade in games, it helps out those people who wanna play games but dont wanna pay the people who made them, microsft say, yeah you’re gamers, then buy a game you want and keep it, play it and support the devs, so we can have more games in the future and less money is being taken by middle men, there are upsides, devs will have to make amazing games cause people will see buying a game as a big investment. it would only benefit the games market :S the people who make the games you love keep there job and food on the table, games get better and middle men like gamestop stop milkin us :S
and price? in the uk its £80 more, but look at the tech and the software behind the camera, the controller is great, and the thing has alot of little features and cool software which is about… £80 worth ?

but people are just greedy, its human nature i get that, and the option is there to pirate or give money to gameshops that rip customers off, eg £5 for a game that they charge £20 for. but too often do we hear of studios shutting down and people losing their jobs and livley hoods cause people want £5 off a game, like games that sell 2,000,000 copies, but 3,000,000 people have achievements, so the studio doesnt get the contract for the sequel, now that my friend is unfair.

      – I dont want Kinect. I dont want to pay for it. I dont like motion control and i dont want to buy it. PS4 is 100.- Euro cheaper and no spy cam included! NICE!

      – i like selling used games i dont like. i keep 75% of my games, at least all of them i think i may want to play again! The rest i sell used and i want to continue this. It calms down my anger about games with bad design (or a design i personally dislike)

      – i like buing new games, half a year after they have been published, for 20.- oder 30.- Euro. Sometimes i also buy used games, but normally i prefer new games. But even beeing a new games buyer, i benefit from the price drop caused by the market situation.

      – internet is not available everywhere and allways. so i hate the idea of this 24 houer refresh. and i like the idea that my ps4 will still run my games in 20 years when microsoft has long shutdown their XBOX ONE Cloud!
