Major Nelson, against my better judgment I pre-ordered an Xbox One (with four controllers and two games). Personally, I thought the MS conference at E3 was amazing and Sony’s was pretty boring (except for KH3 and FFXV, which are both coming to Xbox One anyways). However, I still have some quibbles.

I’m banking heavily on the fact that Microsoft’s digital future is going to drive game prices down. My only problem is (and always has been) the fact that Microsoft has a monopoly over the Xbox Live Marketplace. For PC, if Steam starts to raise its prices, consumers can always go to GreenManGaming or Amazon for better deals, there will always be competition. The same is not true on the Xbox One and that worries me, I am putting all my trust in MS.

Now, I’ve been saying this for a while now, but I’ll repeat it again. These sales need to improve. Now not even Steam has great sales every week, and I’m sure they get repeats often, but there are other ways to improve sales:

    1. Put the DLC on sale with the game, I opted not to buy a lot of the games that have gone on sale in the past because even though the game itself was cheap, I didn’t want to end up paying more for DLC than I did for the original game. Steam does this well, it’s a fairly simple concept that you just haven’t gotten yet. By not putting the DLC on sale with the game you are only losing sales, having both on sale can only increase revenue.

    2. Start competing with retail. I’m not even talking about undercutting retail prices, but at least be on par with them. As already mentioned in this thread: Gears Judgment should not be almost double the price of the retail version.

    3. Blow me away with a summer sale, I don’t care how crappy your deals of the weeks are if the summer sale is amazing like Steam. This will really convince me that my decision to buy an Xbox One is somewhat justified.

Remember Major, if you can convince someone like me that MS knows how to price games competitively, I can convince my friends to purchase an Xbox One. Why would they buy a PS4 when they can get an instant games collection by sharing with me? However, you only have a few months to convince me. I can (and will) cancel my pre-order if I don’t start to see some improvements in the XBL marketplace pricing and sales.

        Like

      • Bryson Jack

You already know that they have always “controlled” their own market. I don’t buy their Games on Demand because a digital copy should NOT cost $15 to $20 more than what I can buy a physical copy, factory sealed for. I cannot go with the Xbox One in the next gen. I pre-ordered a PS4 instead. The Xbox One is a huge privacy risk and an assault on property ownership. Of course everyone can choose what is best for them but realize that by purchasing an Xbox One, you are voting for the policies that dislike so much like a controlled market where they can charge $60 for a DIGITAL copy even after the game has been released for several years.

        Like

      • BlinkFandango

        You are being over dramatic.
        1. Games on Demand isn’t as bad as you think, Tomb Raider (the new one) is currently $30 (not part of a sale as far as I know), whereas on Steam it is $50. The retail version is going for $30 at the Microsoft Store also. Yes, they do have some bad prices, but they also have some good ones too.
        2. Privacy risk? How, because of the Kinect, which can be fully disabled? Yeah, let’s pick the company who exposed 70 million of their users data to hackers by not encoding their data to protect your privacy. How quickly you forget.
        3. Assault on property ownership? That’s what they said about Steam too, and it looks to be doing fine right now.

Not saying I love everything about the Xbox One, but people need to open their eyes.

        Like

      • Javier Ortega

People do really need to know exactly how all the new policies work and how some of them aren’t really that new and have been around for some time, not to just parrot arguments to discredit something they are not fully aware of how it works.

        Like

      • Bryson Jack

I am actually not being over dramatic at all. You happened to choose a rather new game in your example but if you hop on over to price charting dot com and type in Tomb Raider you will see that even for a new game you can pick up a physical copy for $26. That should mean a digital copy in the free market should be less because it doesn’t have to be manufactured, shipped, handled, etc.

You need to research more about Microsoft and PRISM if you think you are safe from privacy concerns. MS was one of the first on board. The Kinect will ALWAYS be listening and you “trust” that it will only be for On and Off commands.

Xbox One violates the “First Sale Doctrine” and is an outright assault on property ownership.

        Like

      • BlinkFandango

        You are being over dramatic.

Looking at some other quick games FFXIII-2 is $20, on par with most retail. AC3 is $40, whereas most retailers still have it for $60. Dark Souls is $20, again on par with most retail stores. You can’t expect MS to undercut retail stores, there would be a huge backlash from big companies, but in a lot of cases they are on par with most retail stores, there are also some where they are higher, I just want them to be on par for most if not all of them.

You can disconnect the Kinect completely because of privacy concerns if you’re that scared. Honestly, what on earth are you guys talking about at home that makes you so worried? If you really care that much about privacy, you better delete your facebook and disqus account, in fact you better stop using the Internet altogether. I honestly understand the concern, but welcome to the digital future, we have no privacy you can either accept that or cut yourself off completely from the world and go live as a hermit.

Parts of Xbox One violate the first sale doctrine (the digital only parts), but doesn’t all of Steam do that too? And the Xbox 360 games you buy digitally? Doesn’t iTunes violate it for music? That’s the price we pay for digital only, there are benefits like convenience too.

        Like

      • Nick Peck

Very well said, and correct too lol!! If anyone is concerned you need to delete your internet foot print totally as any site that you have an account with can be hacked at any given moment. It’s just a risk you have to take with something that will continue to get worse as time goes on.

        Like

      • Bryson Jack

Alright, so you like Microsoft’s prices even though you started the thread saying you didn’t. You expect no privacy in the digital age and will except any violations to privacy as a requirement to live in the digital world and you don’t care about personal property or your rights pertaining to it. You should be very happy with your new Xbox One. To each his own.

The privacy concerns I have are about mandatory microphones, almost always on cameras, heat sensors, heart rate trackers and wi-fi broadcasters that are connected mandatorily to my home, run by a company led by a known Eugenecist, that has been feeding a corrupt National intelligence agency information on its users for years. It makes Orwell’s Telescreen look tame by comparison. Where Sony infringes I am equally concerned but at least with them I have some more choice on the matter.

I like some of MS prices, but they could be more competitive as I mentioned. I only showed you some good examples, but there are bad ones too: Crysis 3 is $60, but it’s less than $40 on Amazon. I want them to be more consistent.

As for privacy, yes, I gave up on that in 2007 when I first made a facebook account. I care about digital property and my rights pertaining to it, but the fact is that the precedent has already screwed me (Steam games, iTunes music, etc). What would you have me do? Fight for dying physical media?

I closed my Facebook account years ago, maybe you could do the same if you care more about your privacy then what you are getting out of the experience of being connected to a CIA funded front project. If you feel that physical media ownership is dying, unimportant and you prefer digital media instead (and you don’t mind a controlled market as opposed to a free market) then I think you should definitely stick with the XBOX ONE because some of the games look like they will be amazing. Best wishes to you fellow gamer.

Pros vs cons, I’d rather keep in touch with family and friends than close my Facebook account. My family is in Australia, my wife’s family is in Brazil, I have friends literally all over the world (the college I attended for my undergraduate was about 40-50% international) and the convenience that Facebook offers outweighs my privacy concerns. I just make sure that my public profile doesn’t contain anything that would embarrass me at a job interview.

I don’t think physical media is dying, I know it is. You can Google “Amazon Now Sells More Kindle Books Than Hardcover and Paperback Combined” to see the Times article on the truth about the future of books. I don’t even need to Google anything to tell you about music, the only reason I buy CDs anymore is because I get a digital copy of the music with it when I purchase it from Amazon. The only media left are movies and console games (PC games have already pretty much gone completely digital). I can tell you now Netflix is killing it for movies and Xbox One looks to be pushing the digital front for console games. Yes, there are negatives, but I think you’re failing to see the positives too: convenience and price (yes, I believe prices will fall when they don’t have to worry about retail).

I don’t fail to see the positives at all…I have a large mp3 library, I own a kindle and half my gaming library is digital. Convenience and price is what digital is all about. There are risks with digital content that I do acknowledge..I could wake up one day and those digital things I own could be gone or altered and they can’t transferred to others or sold. I just happen to feel strongly that physical media should always be an option for people that want it and not “forced” out of the market by greedy corporations who want a purely controlled market. I disagree that the XBOX One is the holy grail of convenience or price..so I will abstain.

You do realize that true geeks and press will be testing the fully off functioning of the Kinect. It’s actually rather simple using Wireshark. The Prism stuff with the NSA is not about how companies are giving your information out. It’s really about how companies are being FORCED to give information out because of poorly written laws with so many backdoors that its easy for intelligence agencies to get what they want. Granted the things that matter the most to these agencies are chat, phone, and email and all accessed by queries to return data. It is highly doubtful that the NSA cares what boxers you are wearing while you are sitting on your couch gaming. Granted they are not following the laws of the constitution by doing these things but they are doing it to stop terrorism and crime. They really don’t care what the gaming population is doing. The Kinect will be no different than a webcam hooked to your pc or laptop. How do I know. Once again, I take off the tin foil hat, stop speculating and do some research and testing; which brings me to my original point, run Wireshark.

Sony’s digital copies do the exact same thing lol, it isn’t any different on psn. I just looked on my buddies ps3 over the weekend and they are still selling digital copies for more than physical copies as well (or equal to depending on the title).

I do agree that ANY digital copy of a game should be at least $5 cheaper since you aren’t getting any retail packaging or a disc. I prefer digital downloads so I have just dealt with it over the years but I think it’s time the pricing falls in line with what you are getting across ALL digital stores.

Well “I” am buying my digital copies of AAA games for $0.99 – $6. If I am going to spend more money than that then I want a physical copy that I can hold in my hand with the option to sell if I so choose someday down the road. The point in all this is that for that “weird” people like me….that should be an option.

Then don’t buy the XBL digital versions if you want to trade games in. Just buy the retail discs and trade them in when you are done with them. You will still have both options like you do today so it’s all good.

Sony’s E3 SHOW was bad, but did you look at their actual game list? google “list of ps4 games” and “list of xbox one games” and bring up the wikipedia pages and it becomes clear. atm PS4 has 71 games and xbox one has 51 games

MS still has 2 more shows coming up where they are going to finish revealing the other new IP’s plus more info across the board. So that # will grow. Also, the point of E3 is to SHOW what you have and what is coming soon and sony couldn’t even do that. I wonder if it will be like the Wii U launch, “buy us now, play what you want in a year”…

I like my Wii U, but I really wish I would have waited lol, oh well. The few games I play on I really enjoy but still, Nintendo dropped the ball.

You have a good point. Most of those games are indie titles, which sadly MS isn’t supporting in the way they should. Having said that the only indie game I am looking forward to is Transistor and I believe that will eventually come to Xbox One. Even if it doesn’t, if I really want to play it I’ll have to get it on PC. Overall, I am looking forward to more of the Xbox exclusives than I am the PS4 exclusives, but that is just personal preference.

Nice Post. I to am spending a nice chunk of change on the Xbox One, but I’m confindent in my purchase as I like everything that I have seen so far. They have the games I want the most which only sweetens the deal.

As for #1, you can’t always put the DLC on sale with the main title all of the time depending on how all or new any of it is. They won’t put new DLC on sale right away or anything but MS does do a pretty good job with putting DLC on sale a lot.

for #2, I love digital products but has always agreed that they need to be a bit cheaper than retail no matter what for obvious reasons. I’m not sure how closely people at MS watch constant fluctuating prices of new and used games to price digital copies accordingly. GoW:J is $40+ for a new retail copy, so it is priced correctly.

For #3, MS has killer end of year sales where you can fine a ton of GoD and XBLA games for dirt cheap. They have a lot of good weekly deals and yearly sales as well but you have to pay attention to when they are because they don’t always last very long. I do hope they add some more deals the coming next gen once they get a good base of game setup.

I’m sure it will be fine down the road as it does take time for any company to build up their systems with a lot of new stuff. We just have to wait and see:)

For #1, I’m talking about games like Toy Soldiers that are old and whose DLC are old as well. Yes, I can see some cases when they can’t put the DLC on sale with the game, but in most cases the games they are putting on sale are old.

For #2, I never used to buy GoD until they started having the sale. I love the convenience of it, but as you mentioned there could be a little bit of work there. The fact that the people that work there aren’t paying attention to retail prices worry me, what are they getting paid to do?

For #3, MS has had some really good sales, I wouldn’t say killer sales, but they get one or two killer deals in their sales. I would like some really killer sales. The Ultimate Games on Demand sale was great, but it was a lot of really old games. Steam does that and sells newer stuff at good prices. I’m not saying their sales are bad, just saying they could do a lot better. The sales are really what are going to make or break the system for me since I only buy games on sale (the only reason I pre-ordered two games was so I don’t feel stupid when my friends come over to try the Xbox One and I have nothing to show them, everything else I’m getting on sale).

Yah I hear you and I hope going into next gen that they do pick up on what sony is doing and stick with it. I don’t sit around and expect free this or that, but at the same time I wouldn’t mind some better deals from them.

It will be hard when the XBO comes out because there is only going to be a very limited amount of XBLA games available as it will take time to build up a library so I doubt we will see any “sales” for awhile.

If they can at least give out or make any DLC uber cheap until the catalog fills up that would be cool. I read that we get 4 games worth of free DLC for the day one system (dead rising 3 is one of them and I forget the rest). It’s like $50 in DLC provided you buy the games to use it with.

Hey, there is never anything wrong with waiting for sales man. There are a lot of games I’d still love to get but I won’t bother until I see them very cheap😀

**Here I found the Day one stuff I mentioned above***
        —————————————————————————
What is a day one Xbox One console? Well you obviously get the console itself, the Kinect sensor, a Xbox One controller and an HDMI cable. What is special about the “Day One” units though is the following:

•Xbox One commemorative controller that says “Day One 2013” on it.

•You will get an exclusive “Day One” achievement but no one quite knows what that means as of yet.

In addition to those items being a part of the console that you will pick up from your favorite store there are also other “Day One” items. There will be a “Day One 2013” 12 month XBox Live membership that you can buy that will come with the day one bonus of Xbox One Killer Instinct: Round One digital game playable with exclusive Shadow Jago character.

Additionally, some of the launch titles will also have a “Day One” version. Titles such as Forza Motorsport 5, Ryse: Son of Rome, Dead Rising 3 and Kinect Sports Rivals will all have special content that will be exclusive to the “Day One” version, at least for a little while. Here is what you will get with each game:

•Forza Motorsport 5 Day One Edition – Instant access to three cars tuned to the top of their class.

•Ryse: Son of Rome Day One Edition – Exclusive multiplayer map and sword with bonus attributes.

•Kinect Sports Rivals Day One Edition – Exclusive sporting equipment that separates your champion from the rest of the world.

•Dead Rising 3 Day One Edition – Exclusive Frank West and Chuck Greene tribute packs with bonus attributes.

It probably won’t make a difference, Major has been talking to the deals team for years and they have never really seemed to get it.

As it stands I’m probably going to cancel my pre-order. As many great games as Xbox One has, all my friends see that PSN+ gives away tons of free games and is cheaper than Xbox Live Gold, PS4 doesn’t require an online check, and all the great games on Xbox One + game sharing is not enough to stop them from switching. Microsoft better have some trump card up their sleeve in the near future (like constant free games from XBL for longer than until the launch of the Xbox One, similar to PSN+) or they are going to lose a lot of business (including mine). If Microsoft can’t convince my friends to buy an Xbox One, why should I waste my breath trying?

Amazon has the LTO version for $29.99 which includes map packs 1 and 2. Why would I pay the same price at Xbox Live for no additional maps and no disc that I can sell later if I want? These Xbox Live prices really need to come down to make sense.
