it seems that both consoles are already struggling to meet the level of computing power gamers expect and demand from a next-gen console. can these really last 10 years?

    • Scazza

When the xbox360 came out, it was already using a gpu from almost 2 years earlier, and had the raw computing power of an ancient pc. Don’t under estimate the power of not having to run a sluggish OS, or having software designed with only one piece of hardware in mind.

      • arrow2010

Yeah now XBone is running a triple OS, like that isn’t going to cause everything to be laggy and slow.

      • MaximMillion

From the demos it appears to be a very fast UI experience. The OS’s are optimized, you realize?
We’ll see at launch, but already from what we’ve seen “laggy and slow” isn’t accurate.

It’s the complete opposite actually, separating the OS into 3 that run simultaneously allows features to run more smoothly as the games and apps run on a different dedicated OS.

I think the Blade design worked a lot faster than the metro one we have today.

Or I just have rose tinted glasses in regards to the blade system.

Anyway, the biggest thing of this gen is the memory of course. Hopefully all three operating systems doesn’t bog it down.

You are seriously confused Scazza. It was the PS3 that had a graphics chip that was behind the current technology on its release. The Xbox 360 chip was ahead of the PC graphics when it was released, and even ATI had discussed how they put the ‘next version’ of technology into the Xbox 360 before they released it into the PC cards, which they did shortly after. Please stop showing your fanboyism and console hatred and just enjoy the games.

I think it is rather sad that neither “next gen” console can render all the games for them at 1080p (or higher). One would think that would be a given these days, especially when 4k UHD TV is on the way to becoming the next standard.

      Like

      • usrev

4k is no where near standard. maybe in 5-6 years it will be. and by then next next gen will be announced.

I think it may be even longer than that, the majority of tv channels are still only broadcasting sd and the ones broadcasting hd are only 720p, the only source of 1080p for movies is blu rays and netflix now offers it, it useless for now. I just hope when it does become standard its a blu ray format that only requires a firmware update for current blu ray players.

But we already saw this pas 7-8 years that the xbox 360 was the better console. Sometimes I believe that sony is paying some staff just to fill every website with pro-PlayStation comments and bash the other consoles. The hate toward xbox one is unbelievable!

You’re remembering it wrong. It was completely the opposite. That’s like saying “Steam was beloved and was a huge hit when it came out”

PS3 was a huge joke back then, the price tag, “get a second job”, “giant enemy crab for massive damage, this is based on real history”, “RIIIIIIDGE RACER”.

The whole E3 2006 was a complete joke, and the PS3 was the punchline. The PS3 didn’t come into it’s own until a few years ago, and the sales numbers improved because of that.

Before the PS3 released, yes, this was the case. Sony hyped it up, slandered the competition, and said a whole bunch of things that never eventuated – much like a bad politician.
Then after it released it was indeed a joke, for the reasons @disqus_AV4tKxPyb9:disqus mentioned above (I loled!) and more… It took almost 4 years for Sony to snap out of it and start producing titles that made people want the PS3.

Xbox has gone downhill in the past 4 years, BADLY, the quality of their games, and updates are just awful lately, Did you play gears of war judgement? I beat it in 3 hours, and then the multiplayer was HORRID cog vs cog… WTF… I would understand if the story was about cogs fighting other cogs… but it wasnt…

it was just a bad game.

Halo 4…. Ruined the entire series for me, then again so did REACH.

Forza I haven’t played since forza 2 since there have always been better racing games out there and readily available, Burnout, Need For Speed, etc(I dont like Gran Turismo either) I wish a new test drive would come out😛

But Microsoft has PISSED ME OFF… they own the rights to the greatest game ever made, conkers bad fur day, and still haven’t either put it in their digital library(un-censored only please), nor have they made a sequel.

        Also they ruined Banjo Kazooie.

Kinect games all blow, than again so does all motion gaming pretty much.

I remember when the original xbox came out and they have new and great franchises, such as Fable, Halo, Forza, Panzer Dragon, Voodoo Vince, Dr Muto, Brute Force, and several others.

The 360, and microsofts bad decisions have ruined them, I cant even turn my box on without some stupid advertisement playing…

And on top of all this they force a camera into my house and sign with the NSA!!

the $600 price is the reason the ps3 didn’t take off until a few years ago. now that the ps3 is cheaper on about the same as the 360 it’s been doing pretty well.

if the ps3 was $400 at launch and had a few more good exclusives around launch the 360 would have been a joke this gen. the 360’s best years were the starting first 3 years or so. then it just… died. it was like MS said “we are ahead. lets stop doing everything that makes people want our console” and did nothing but throw us a halo every once in a while.

before the ps3 game out it was a joke. $600? yea right. it had almost no good games until around 2009 (which was about when MS quit caring). for the consumer the easy choice was xbox. the ps3 was more powerful but it was so hard to utilize that power that we didn’t see it for years.

the roles are reversed now. MS has the over priced console. Sony has the games. and it isn’t just kids buying the ps4, most games will be choosing ps4 simply because MS quit halfway through this gen while sony did not. the list of sony exclusives is staggering. not to mention PSN+.. which is probably the best bang for your buck in gaming since the PS1’s $300 price tag.

Wrll other than the terrible PR and the alien cell which made all multiplatforms better on the 360 to this day sony’s real problem was one thing, arrogance.

and now MS is the arrogant one, also there are plenty of multiplats that are better or not really different on ps3, it just took a few years before it became like that.

      • MaximMillion

Sony’s list of exclusive is hardly ‘staggering’ IMO… The reason I opted for the X1 is because of the better quality games, rather than the sheer number of them. Most of the PS4’s lineup and indie games, which are fine, but I can play those sorts of games pretty much anywhere. As of right now there’s not really any game on PS4 I really want. However, the X1 has me sold with Titanfall, Killer Instinct, Dead Rising 3, Forza 5, Quantum Break and Project Spark. Ryse looks pretty cool too.

I would agree that a lot of people are switching because of MS’s poor support for 360 exclusives over the last few years. But I think they’re back on track now.

        Like

      • usrev

titanfall and project spark look great but the rest looks kinda meh compared to the ps3 game list. if you go to the “list of ps4 games” and “list of xbox one games” on wikipedia you will see ps4 has roughly 2 times more games announced than xbox one and many of those titles are unique or high quality titles. planetside 2 for instance could be huge if it gets some marketing. it’s a large scale FPS with hundres, maybe thousands of players on one massive battlefield.

        Like

      • MaximMillion

Well that’s your opinion, and as I stated above, those games I mentioned are my preference, IMO. I have indeed checked out the games lists for the launch window of both consoles (sometime ago), and the PS4’s list is made of of dozens of indie games and a lot of old games bought over from PC. Hardly unique or high quality, lol. Perhaps fun for a while, that’s all. And you can get free indie games on your PC anyway, if you want them.

Planetside 2 is an Ok game, though it’s old. I’ve played it on my friend’s PC, but thousands of players on a battlefield doesn’t necessarily make for a good game. It’s no system seller that’s for sure. And that’s what I mean… which titles on PS4 make me want to buy it? So far, none. Quantity does not mean quality. Order 1886 looks interesting, I’ll keep an eye on it. In constrast, Titanfall is clearly the standout game this launch cycle. It’s unique, fun, plays well, and everyone who’s played it says it’s great. I’ve been waiting for a new KI for years so I was on board for that pretty quickly. And Project Spark basically let’s you create any game you want. On top of that, ALL X1 games have dedicated servers. For multiplayer gamers that itself is a huge selling point.
So yeeeeah I’m X1 all the way.

“Microsoft’s Xbox One Day One edition and standard edition console are officially sold out everywhere, so gamers may not be able to get their hands on the new console until December.

States Chronicle reported on rumors that the second batch of consoles may not be ready until Dec. 31.

The Day One edition will include the Kinect sensor, chat headset, HDMI cable, Xbox One controller with a special monogram, and a special Day One achievement on the Xbox One itself for $499.

The standard console with include all of that minus the monogram and achievement for the same price.

Large electronic retailers such as Best Buy, Toys R’ Us, Gamestop, and even Microsoft’s own site are not even offering pre-orders at this time.

Microsoft previously cut the number of countries they were launching the console on in order to combat shortages, but the demand was still too high.”

No but lines saying less CUs are better are honestly stupid.
I don’t care about the power inside the console as it is sufficient but that sentence really was stupid.
Also what do they mean about “balance”?

      • robo

I guess you didn’t read what they actually said about upping the speed. It improves the performance of more than just the gpu. They tested speed boost vs upping cu’s with launch titles

        Like

      • Chuck

they didn’t say less CUs were better, they said more CUs didn’t add anything due to other bottlenecks. In other words adding CUs would have increased price but gave no game improvements.

By balance they mean all components working together seamlessly not just thrown in for the sake of raw power. Think of it like two cars, on paper one has more horsepower than the other, the car with less horsepower will win if it has components that work together extremely well, the car with more horsepower might have components that dont work well together causing it to lose the race.

A lot of people? Only a complete idiot who has no life, enthusiasm or interests would “leave” it in the box. Why would they just leave it there and not even try such a piece of advanced, innovative technology?

        Like

      • Volitar Prime

A lot of people are just not that interested in dance, fitness, and run around the room “sports” mini-games. These are what the Kinect works best with but they are not for everyone.

Sure, it is advanced and innovative technology, but many gamers they just don’t need it to play CoD, Forza, Halo, Titanfall, or BF4.

MS has yet to demonstrate a “killer app” for the Kinect 2.

I have yet to see a “normal” game be “better with Kinect”. I have always found that instead of yelling at the Kinect in order to throw a grenade it is just easier to press a button on the controller. Same with using it to navigate the system menu. Instead of waving my hands around and/or yelling at it I find using a controller or IR remote control to just work better.

This is why so many people have been asking for a release without the packed in Kinect 2. Why pay $100+ for something they don’t want to use?

      • Tomo

One feature I liked that they demonstrated in a shooter with Kinect 2 was tapping your forehead to turn on your visor. This frees up more buttons on the controller, and in my opinion is actually better. Kinect 2 is so accurate that it would be just as reliable as a button also.

Some of the other features such as recognising the players/profiles of people, signing them in, using all of their settings, etc. and knowing who has the controller and all that. Them features are so efficient, and people who use Kinect will get so used to it that it’ll be annoying when they play a console without Kinect. Voice and motion navigation also make things easier, especially when watching a movie or something when you can’t find the remote. Kinect is so expensive, innovative and accurate, that it will work consistently (I’m assuming). There’re tonnes of little features that make Kinect great. Not to mention all the possibilities with games.

MAYBE NOT THE EXTRA €100, but it doesn’t deserve all the hate is getting. I think it’s excellent value for someone who is open to having Kinect. If Microsoft made the console €450, nobody should be complaining.

While the idea of tapping your forehead to turn on your visor is an unique and innovative idea it involves removing your hand from the controller to do so. This just might not be practical for everyone. In the heat of the action it would be so much quicker and easier to just leave your hands on the controller and press a button. This way your hands are still where there need to be so that you can perform other quick actions as needed.

How about a little philosophy about making digital copies of Xbox One titles available for pre-order so people that want to buy digital versions can get in on pre-order bonuses?

From MS or the games developers, not store specific bonuses though. However, GS is now letting you buy download codes for specific games, so I’m starting to wonder if all retailers will do this route so that way digital buyers will still get the incentives.

Doesn’t help with games like Destiny. You have to pre-order to get in on the Beta. If I have to wait until the game releases to buy, that pretty much leaves me out of the Beta.

I have read the whole article, even though I couldn’t understand some chip architecture terms, it’s given me a lot of very interresting facts. Microsoft keeps convincing me that Xbox One is a real innovation with a lot of talented people thinking about many clever improvements – sorry guys, you don’t have to agree with me, but for me personally, more raw power doesn’t equal innovation.
Yes, Xbox One is less powerfull than PS4 (in terms of GPU performance), though the difference definitely won’t be that siginificant. But there are two very interresting ideas the Xbox One team has come up with:
    1) Each game has its own OS. That is a great feature. As far as I understand, every developer will be then able to fit the OS to their needs. They can modify the OS to directly fit to their engines. And that is a great thing!
    2) The Xbox One is able to change image (not screen) resolution on the fly. So it means no more frame drops if the scene is too complex (for example multiplayer – we all know that; moreover in these cases FPS is much more important that 1080p or 900p).
Keep up the great work, looking forward to receiving my Xbox One!🙂

I am having a hard time deciding which ones to buy Derek but that’s because there are so many launch titles lol. I am leaning towards Ryse, Watchdogs and Dead Rising 3 as the first 3 I buy at launch. Shortly after that though, I still want AC: IV, BF 4, possibly Ghosts, Madden and Forza 5. Just too many options. Not a bad problem to have though.🙂

I would like to hope so. As long as Microsoft doesn’t shoot itself in the foot anymore. The process goes like this. I read gaming news and see Microsoft pull some bad PR. I get angry and run to Sony. Then when I hop into my 360 later that night, all the hate goes away and I remember what I love about my Xbox and I run back.

PS4 has no launch titles to offer for me, which is why I’m buying one in two years and buying a Xbox at launch.

My games I’ll be buying within the first 6 months will be Dead Rising 3 / Ryse / AC4 / Watch dogs / Ghosts and maybe Forza 5.

Then later in the year, Destiny / Titanfall / The Division / Quantum Break / Witcher 3 / Fable Legends and once I’ve seen more maybe Sunset Overdrive.

Midnight launch will be day one Xbox one with Fifa free and I’ll be picking up AC4 and Dead rising 3.

You do realize even though you’re hiding behide a “guest” account your ISP is tracking your every move online via your IP address. Major Nelson more then like can see your IP address and could if he wanted find out anything and everything about you right?

You more then likely have a smart phone which is tracked every day via GPS.

The IP address will only go to the ISP, but with the correct port and table from the ISP, you know who it is.

Also, the GPS in the phone drains lots of battery, so it’s rarely activated. Like I’ve done, turned mine off completely (it’s actually broken somehow <.<).

That’s your own personal GPS. There is a private GPS which can’t be turned off and is automatically activated without he owners knowledge by your phone provider.
