I know the X1 has only just released and there are only about 10-15 games for the system, but when do you think we will start seeing deals and savings on X1 titles? Will it be a year from now or a couple of months? Will Summer of arcade carry over to X1 now seeing as arcade titles aren’t arcade anymore?

They said that Games with Gold would start for Xbox One in January.

information coming in 2014, this could mean games with gold doesn’t come until december 2014, or heck maybe they will announce games with gold xbox one titles in 2014 and start the actual program 2015.

meanwhile ps4 is already getting free titles. MS playing catch-up again sadly

WHy not put some of the day one Xbox one games on sale?…. If you dropped digital downloads, I would buy one or 2…
With the sales going for most Xbox one games on Amazon and other locations for $49.99 each, why not do that on Xbox live ?

Sadly I don’t think we will ever see cheaper digital prices on a Microsoft system.

      Like

      • DavidinCT

I’m still one who feels that a digital download should be cheaper than a retail disc. As there is no cost for discs, packaging, shipping, returns, etc.
That could count for 20-30% of the cost of a game and should be cheaper for us…

Dont remember ever a publisher having a sale on fresh released content. Might be wrong, but sales usually only happen when they need to boost sales on old content

      Like

      • MathGuy42

I think it would be in the publisher’s best interest to put the digital versions on sale for $49, like Amazon and Walmart have done for the retail discs. The publisher doesn’t need to worry about second hand sales. Depending on their deal with MS, their profit margin might also be higher than physical discs. I’d like to go digital for games I know I’ll keep, but paying more is unattractive.

        Like

      • ikari_paul

dont think they want to upset retail, thats why (illogically) the digital prices are same/more expensive than retail.

Doesnt make any sense, considering they’re bypassing the middlemen… im certain that all this makes perfect sense to whoever has to handle sales.

        Like

      • TheGlobalizer

Give it time, digital will compete with retail and the prices will go down. Retail can afford to lower prices because they’re selling other stuff at the same time. Digital will need to figure out its true value proposition and then price to that.

        Like

      • MathGuy42

I think your idea is correct. But it isn’t quite a direct competition. If prices were equal, many would still purchase discs due to resale value, the desire to collect, the ability to give a physical gift, or just plain tradition.

For older titles, there’s also the retailers desire to clear out old stock. But that shouldn’t apply to XB1 yet.

Hopefully someone handling sales realizes that charging 20% more for digital doesn’t make sense, especially when they want to push digital. At least some of the GonD sales have competitive prices, like $10 for old Spider-Man games. It would be nice if old titles went that low permanently.

Major, Im not looking for a sale on X1 games (basically because I’ve bought most of them via the X1 Store(and loving digital only)), but there really needs to be a way for those who bought Killer Instinct Combo Breaker to be able to upgrade (for $20) to the Ultimate Edition. It seems a little silly to expect people to pay $40 for the Ultimate Edition if they already own the Combo Breaker Edition.

Hmm… I’ll still play X360 for a long time and I’m not intending to get a XOne (I’ve got the competitor).

So, cheaper games are always welcome, mainly when we have credit in our account needed to be spent.

I would buy a XOne if there was retrocompatibility… and that was the only feature I expected (whatever always online or blocking used games). So, I thought it was time to play in the other team during this gen.

      Like

      • Nick Peck

um, they don’t have BC either lol so what was your thinking there? I wouldn’t put to much stock into the streaming classics thing, if people have a hard time streaming HD movies don’t expect to stream playable games all that well either. Keep the 360. Why do people obsess at playing old content on a brand new system? I really don’t get it.

        Like

      • Michael Burden

Well the main advantage is you can trade in your old system if your new one plays your old games, thus reducing your entry cost into the next generation. Myself I prefer to play them on the system they were designed for since they run better than emulation most of the time, but definitely would have welcomed BC on the One if it was done properly.

        Like

      • Nick Peck

Again I can see your point and totally understand it. But having gone through so many generations of “things” (movies, tapes, cd’s ect) I just know that when the old is done, you move on to the new.

People are kind of spoiled that they could move their dvd collection to the BR age for example. I agree, i’d always rather play it on the original system but even though the 360 and ps2/3 could play the previous systems games, I never once used it.
I buy the new stuff to play and see the new stuff🙂 I would be cool if it’s there, but I honestly think that more people say they would use it than those that actually use it.

But again, good point and I know what you mean, but I just don’t really see much point in it these days. At least for myself.

        Like

      • m1nh0ca

        As I don’t have a PS3, I think the best is having the 360 and the PS4 with PS+.

If there was the retrocompatibility, I’d sell my 360 and recover some of the money I invested on it, keeping only the XOne. As I have to start from zero, PS4 was more attractive, in my personal view.

        Like

      • Nick Peck

If that’s how you like it that’s fine, I have no problem with that but I just don’t get the “general” idea that BC MUST exist on newer devices. You just have to accept that you bought into a generation of “something” and at its end, you have to start a new.

Think of Beta Max to VHS, cassette Tape to CD’s, VHS to DVD’s, it’s just how upgrading goes. Once the new gen roles out I’m done with the last gen pretty much and I could care less about BC because I know that you have to “leave” it behind and move forward with the new.

Again, no issues with your opinion, not everyone see’s everything the same way and that’s ok🙂

        Like

    • vivalajam26

I do. I too am getting an Xbone next year, probably after E3. But until then, why not enjoy some of the games on the current gen? I think if you’re not going to be able to play them next gen, why miss out? It is dumb that arcade games don’t carry across.

      Like

      • Michael Burden

But there is no difference in the coding between retail disc titles and arcade/downloadable titles, which means they both have the same problem not running on a new system architecture (PowerPC to x86). Why do people think just because it is downloadable it is somehow different in code that a retail disc game and will work on any system? are people really that naive and misinformed?

        Like

      • vivalajam26

“are people really that naive and misinformed?” Well apparently so.

But through emulators and the “power of the cloud” then it would surely be possible.

        Like

      • Michael Burden

Well duh, but if that was the case (emulation) then it would apply to ALL 360 titles, not just Live Arcade. I too think it was an error on their part to not have some sort of backwards compatibility, but also understand the difficulty in implementing it which is especially more difficult this generation (360) since the games and hardware are much more complex than the last. While it may not apply to you, many people are under the assumption that just because it is a downloadable or arcade title it is somehow different than a retail disc and should easily transferred to the next generation when this is simply not the case. Not to mention the return on investment would be much lower enabling BC on Arcade titles since they are all lower priced than retail discs.

The “power of the cloud” comment is equally naive. That would imply streaming which has its own share of problems as Microsoft recently stated themselves, most having to do with bandwidth speeds.

For some games I like having them on my harddrive (like those I know I won’t trade-in. And the ease of access is nice, and I enjoy building both a digital and physical library). Like many gamers I’m a bit ocd about collecting, and I have the other AC games on my harddrive, and it would be nice to complete the set. I also live in a commuter town so I don’t have a car with me and the nearest gamestop is rather far. GonD is just the fastest, most efficient way to get a game – don’t mind the price so long as its a game I really want.

MS like to work with retail partners like Wal-Wart and GameStop. They put in a buffer period from retail release to on demand to try and not hurt retail sales. I think this practice will be ending though with the XBO.

Great story, mature theme, branching storyline options (entirely different middle section). Doesn’t overly hold your hand, but not brutally difficult either.

Downsides are around gameplay – some find it clunky (I thought it was fine) and some aspects have limited usefulness (particularly crafting potions and such).

It’s one of my favorite RPGs and my #1 “swords and sorcery” RPG (just ahead of Dragon Age: Origins and Skyrim). Not for everyone, though, but well worth $5.

Coherent, usable comment on a v.g. thread. Glorious!
I hope it is $5. I read it at $29.99 now which will put it at $7.50 (not really that important, but… math).

I very much enjoyed Skyrim. I’m at home with games like the Mass Effect series because I love stories. I also look for games to find that sweet spot of not dumbing things down for mass consumption, but not making things ridiculously difficult to navigate around (as some RPGs, or for whatever reason, ACIII’s interface did to me).

I’ll probably end up getting it. Heck – if I enjoy only 5 hours of it, then I’m at about $1 per hour of entertainment which is really good!

        Like

      • TheGlobalizer

Yeah, didn’t check the current price, thought I saw $5 in another comment. Anyway, if you like Mass Effect and non-hand-holding you should like it a lot. The world isn’t overly big – it’s not really a true open-world, more like “open area” – but I really enjoyed the richness of it.

everything about it is amazing but the combat. I’d put it on the easiest difficulty and try and play through the story. the game is pretty hard though but I think I played on normal.

worth trying for $5, especially with the wither 3 coming next year or the year after, and unlike most games they REALLY change it up every sequel.

It’s a lot like a BioWare RPG, other than Geralt not being customizable and there not being a player controlled party. It’s got a good story with good writing and there’s meaningful decisions.

The only bad thing I can say about the game is that the level design is rather poor in some cases. I spent a good deal of Act 2 just trying to figure out how to get to where I wanted. I suppose the combat can be very challenging and one might consider that a negative. Also the game is quite short compared to The Witcher, it still took me over 20 hours for my first playthrough though.

Overall an excellent game, especially for so cheap.
