Xbox One System Update coming Feb 11

A battery indicator for your controller!

LOOK – A battery indicator for your controller

Marc Whitten has just posted details on Xbox Wire of the next Xbox One System Update that is coming next week.

Here are the highlights from the post:

On February 11, the first update will be delivered to customers who sign into their Xbox One.  It features many new improvements – including lots of behind-the-scenes updates for developers building apps and games for Xbox One, several new features we believe Xbox fans will love, stability and product updates to improve the customer experience, and continuous improvements to the quality of Kinect voice so commands become more fluid and responsive over time.  While we won’t be going into all of the details of the product updates today, we will be sharing more information soon.

Some of the features you can expect to see on February 11 include:

The ability to see and manage your storage space. With this update, you will find it easy to find how much space your content takes up and better manage your content. You can also control your install lineup and more easily manage your download queue. We’ve separated My Games and My Apps into separate lists, so you can easily create separate queues for both. Now you can pick the order in which you want your content to load and we’ve added a boot progress indicator so you can better track updates while they load.

The battery power indicator is back! You can see it right on the home screen, so you can easily track how much battery life is left on your controller.

And, you will be able to use your USB keyboard with your Xbox One.

These are just a few of the many updates we will be shipping on February 11. We’ll share more details on these and other upcoming features in the coming weeks. We have several surprises in store that we think you’ll love.

March 4 system updates – countdown to “Titanfall”

On March 4, in advance of what is expected to be the biggest game launch of the year, we will be delivering another system update to prepare your Xbox One for “Titanfall.”  This update will contain  many new features and improvements, most significantly to our party and multiplayer systems.

Is this the update that will give Xbox One 32 ROPS on the GPU instead of the 16 it currently has so it can keep up with PS4? Oh… No… it just gives features the Xbox 360 had SINCE 2005.

So you think it’s acceptable to have paid more for a console that has a weaker GPU and every single online gaming feature has been made slower or more obtuse than the preceding version? I should give them a pat on the back for that achievement? When Apple releases a new ipad do they suddenly forget all the features that made the previous model great? Give me a break…

I didn’t have to ‘wait’ for 360 to have a decent party, achievement system or guide functionality that quickly gets to my friends… it was there at launch in 2005. Please explain why you think I should have ‘waited’ for those things to be in a newer console from the same company?

        Hi
You should read “Xbox 360 Uncloaked” by Dean Takahashi.
They rushed 360 to market to be the first next gen console on sale (ultimately the result was RROD… but they were first and that paid off). The sad truth is that the team they had in place (as management of the various parts of Xbox) had a vision that was gamer focused. The Xbox One is a result of a team that thought “gamers will buy it anyway” – and therefore focused on wider ideas and experiences that would bring in other family members. That’s the truth of it… they simply thought as long as it played Halo and Forza, you’d come running. PS4 sales figures proved that was a mistake… it remains to be seen if they get that expanded audience they are after.

Read Xbox 360 Uncloaked by Dean Takahashi. 360 was an epic effort to get to market first to be the first HD system.
The sad fact is Xbox was managed by a team of people focused on the core gamer. Xbox One’s management team thought “oh, gamers will buy it anyway” – so they focused on features that would appeal to a broader audience and more members of the household. They simply thought you’d buy it regardless if it had Halo and Forza, etc. Thankfully that view probably no longer persists given the delta between PS4 and Xbox One sales. For Cortana’s sake, I hope so.

Honestly Xbox One’s party, achievement, or guide functionality to get to friends doesn’t seem appreciably more sluggish or less usable than Xbox 360’s original OS.

Xbox One: Achievement Pops Up > Hold Guide Button > Open Notifications > Select Achievement > Press A > Open Achievement App > Read Achievement.
Xbox 360: Achievement Pops Up > Tap On Guide Button Once.

Everything has been made into more unnecessary steps.

Hopefully the update will fix it.

Correct. Because they understand that your don’t piss off your core consumer that generates positive word of mouth. If they designed an upgrade that means all your apps no longer work and half the features were missing… do you think that people would be saying “oh well, just be patient, they’ll fix it eventually?”

What Phone do you have? Every phone since 2000 has a camera on it. maybe not a front facing one… ALL of them have mic’s on them. You’re PC is connected to the internet. That’s all the NWO needs to know everything you do.

Any phone you have has its location tracked via cell towers. And it is possible you have a phone without a camera, but it is pretty unlikely that you have one without a microphone. So while it can’t see you in your boxer, it can track what you say and where you are.

        How is that?

Aside from the fact that your phone will still record everything you say when you make a call…

Perfect. You are someone who is VERY paranoid, and won’t take advantage of current technology because of it. Odds are you take advantage of TOR or some other VPN to hide your online activity. You keep a phone with your that is mainly used for making calls since it sounds like you keep it turned off most of the time. I’m going to guess you don’t even use a credit card since your location and purchases can be tracked with that. Online gaming is out, especially communicating over XBL for obvious reasons.

Also, if you don’t trust Microsoft or the US government, odds are you don’t use Windows, OSX, Android, or iOS. So most likely you use Linux or something similar like FreeBSD. That isn’t an issue with me, as I use Linux myself. But most people don’t care for it.

P.S. Recent reports show that the NSA still does a good job of identifying people using TOR, so be careful.

      • ikari_paul

also, the talk was about having a camera in the living room, connected to the net, and pointed at you. not just about tracking. but of course, you twisted that to suit you

        hows that too?

        Like

      • A. J.

Can you point to anything in the conversation that said “living room”, or eluded to it? In fact, nobody specifically mentioned anything about being connected to the net either.

        – Virus just mentioned the NSA.
        – Lamarr said that your phone and PC are just as hack-able as the X1, and your ISP knows what you do.
        – You replied to Lamarr saying your phone and PC don’t have a cam.

The original point of the thread was that Kinect was used by the NSA. The NSA issue isn’t just about watching your in your living room, but monitoring everything and anything about what you do, where you go, or what you say. So commenting on tracking is part of the overall argument of “Is Kinect any more of a spy tool than everything else.”

When you want to go to friends or quickly check an achievement, it takes a LOT longer than the Xbox 360. We need an Xbox Guide. It’s the fastest and most efficient way. Or just the option to turn it on or off, for people who prefer the way it is now on the Xbox One.

Okay.. so don’t get me wrong this is a VERY welcome addition to the xbox one operating system, but I can’t be the only one who’s realizing that all these “updates” we’ve been waiting for since November should have come standard with the system when we bought it.. it’s like it’s trying to finally catch up to the xbox 360.. 9 years after the 360 released. And just the way major nelson started this blog post like, look a battery indicator ! Making a joke about how many people complained about this as if somehow it wasn’t a legitimate complaint.. I’m not trying to be super bitter here or anything, I love my Xbox but I just can’t help but feel like they just weren’t ready for this whole “next gen” thing when they released it.

I can agree to a point. Sure a lot of this stuff should have been there at launch no doubt, but with all of the changes I think some stuff just got tossed on the back burner for an update. Sony did the exact same thing with the ps4 and it’s many missing launch day features as well. It happens I suppose, but at the same time none of these missing things were a deal breaker or life threatening.

Small quality of life things is all they really are and it’s nice to have them back along with some new stuff.

      • Mitchell Hall

Yeah I get that. I bought my ps4 about 3 weeks ago but had my Xbox One since launch day. I definitely prefer the xbox.. always have but there’s some things that are starting to really upset me about this whole thing. I hate the fact that every time I look there’s a new article talking about another game that’s going to run better or higher framerate or higher resolution on ps4. It’s starting to bum me out big time man. I thought it was just a launch thing, then this huge controversy came out about tomb raider.. it really sucks for us xbox gamers to know we’re getting less pretty looking versions of games so soon in the Life Cycle of these consoles.. it makes me fear for the coming years. Will the gap continue to widen? I sure hope not.. I don’t want to start playing my multiplat games on the ps4.. The only reason I’ve ever used my playstations was for exclusives, everything else would be played on my Xbox.. but I’m starting to rethink it. I wonder if the rumors about xbox freeing up 8% gpu power for developers is true, and if it would make a difference.

      • Nick Peck

Again I can agree to a point. Good posts. I understand where you are coming from but I can offer a little insight to a few things. I bought Tomb Raider for both systems, played them side by side and honestly, there is zero difference. The XBO version runs and looks great and you honestly don’t even notice the frame rate difference (the ps4 almost never hits 60fps anyways). I returned the ps4 version and am keeping the XBO copy.

Being totally honest here, the resolution and frame rates don’t bother me, they never really have. As long as it looks great and plays even better, I’m happy. I also have my ps4 on ebay as I really don’t care for it, not impressed. The only game I want on it is Second Son but with Titanfall coming out I’ll never play it. I’ll get another ps4 early next year when the games I want for it start coming out (hopefully since most of them have no tentative release dates currently).

I have CoD and BF4 on both systems and will say that yes, they are a bit sharper on the ps4, but at the same time I have more issues running those games on the ps4 than on the XBO. CoD has this odd (not net related) stuttering issue while playing and BF4’s servers are much worse than the XBO’s in my experience. I have never ending rubberbanding and other issues with that version I just gave up. But of course I won’t fully blame the ps4 for that game lol, it has it’s issues on every platform still.

Now, I won’t lie and say that I don’t wish the XBO versions of games were totally 1:1 with the ps4 copy but I’m hopeful in time they will hit that sweet spot with some updates that will allow the dev’s to push a little harder. Is it still a platform thing that they haven’t full figured out (like the memory subsystem) that will help them gain some juice? Who knows.

As long as the games are fun I’m down, after all I still prefer the XBO controller hands down. The DS4 is a great upgrade over the DS3 no doubt, but it’s still in a distant 2nd place next to the XBO’s controller, at least in my book.

They are both great systems with a lot of good looking software so I wouldn’t worry so much about the #’s man, just enjoy the games content.

Yeah you definitely make me feel better about it all, but before I address anything else you said, let me say.. take your ps4 off of eBay unless you absolutely need the cash bro! I’m just as big of an xbox gamer as you, but I keep my playstations because they have great exclusives, there’s no denying that and infamous looks awesome! I’m so excited for that game. I’m also getting titanfall at launch but since there is no single player campaign there is definitely room for both games man. For me personally, I play pretty much all types of games. I’m just a huge gamer I love it all.. so while fps multiplayer games aren’t my favorite I do enjoy throwing on cod and battlefield on my xb1 a few times a week to play some multiplayer but in between I always love having a good single player experience and infamous will definitely be an amazing one. I fully expect titanfall to be amazing but I also don’t see it as a game I could play every day.. I guess it’s because I love my story driven games. Anyway I’m getting off topic what I’m trying to say is there is room for both games in march! Haha also mgs ground zeroes😉 but yeah I’m hopeful xbox will be able to keep up, I know as Internet connections get faster around the world cloud computing is definitely a viable option to increase graphics ! Also I agree the dualshock 4 is an insane improvement over last gen. I feel like both controllers are pretty much on par right now. Both have their own certain strengths but I love both.

I agree with you, everyday there is a new article about that difference. However, everything that I see on internet I take it with a grain of salt. It`s just like in Tomb Raider case, which the midia says it runs on 60fps vs 30fps. But the facts are that it doesn`t run at 60fps on PS4, averages 50fps with a lot of drops and it`s locked on Xbox One at 30 fps. You know it`s just not so simple to compare as midia does: one runs at 60fps and the other at 30. I`m not neglecting that PS4 has some advantage now, but I believe that such difference is not so great as people says and it is temporary (at least I hope).

        Like

      • usrev

in digital foundry’s testing the ps4 only dropped to about 35fps at worst, but averaged 50fps overall. xbox one it isn’t locked, it’s just usually around 30fps, but can get as high as 40fps in empty areas.

it’s not temporary either, I know it seems little but a game running at 50fps is a big jump over 30fps. it’s because unlike with the ps3, the ps4 is just as easy to develop for as the xbone or a pc, in fact it’s most likely easier than both. this means devs can pull that power out.

the ps3 was much more powerful than the 360, but no one used that power because you had to fight it every step of the way, look at early ps3 games and they look like ps2 games. it was because of the ps3 architecture. this is no longer an issue

honestly, I doubt any game will notably be better graphically or framerate wise on xbox one this gen unless MS pays for something like that.

      • IvanCD(MaidenLOKO)

It seems for me that it`s pretty much locked at 30fps…

        http://wwwdoteurogamerdotnet/articles/digitalfoundry-2014-tomb-raider-definitive-performance-analysis

I think it`s the same article once it is also from digitalfoundry, where in this article is saying that Xbox One framerate is unlocked and it can get as high as 40fps in empty areas?

Anyways, as I said I recognize PS4 has the edge on graphics now, I`m just curious how this will ends up. Just as you said, PS3 was more powerful (theoretically) than 360 but we all know that such difference didn`t impact the last gen…

I`m no dev and I really don`t understand anything about programming then I can`t give my opinion about that, but Hideo Kojima seems not be very worried about programming on Xbox One, once he said both plataform are very similar to develop…

      Imagine 2 scenarios:

      1) Buy an X1 in November 2013. Have items patched over time. Let’s say everything is how you want it finally next November.
      2) Buy an X1 with the same hardware, working fully in November 2014.

Personally, I’d rather they be more aggressive and release the product earlier. Because of current programming methodologies/techniques and things like high-speed internet, it is a very good option to release a product earlier while still developing features for it.

Don’t get me wrong, major bugs like crashing to the dashboard do not have a place in this methodology. But having things be a bit slow or clunky and speeding them up over time is just fine. Missing a feature like showing how much hard drive space is free only affected a tiny percentage of people so far. And those it did affect likely were able to resolve their issues quickly anyways. So does it really hurt that much to add that feature a few months in?

On one hand, it is catching up on the 360. But on the other hand, they built a much more flexible and modular foundation for the OS that should allow it to surpass the 360 quickly.

I’m not saying you are whining or being unreasonable to expect those features. I’m just trying to explain that things aren’t as bad as they seem.

I absolutely see your point and agree with it somewhat. It just sort of upsets me when a new console is launched missing key features such as the battery indicator. It doesn’t make sense in my mind. You would think it would make sense to build from everything the last gen had and begin adding from there. It wasn’t a huge deal for me but not being able to access storage did affect me. I began a profile on nfs rivals, then wanted to get rid of that and begin again from scratch, only there’s no option for this on the game.. so for that reason there was absolutely no way for me to delete that profile and begin again. That being said you definitely made some good points. In no way do the issues I brought up affect my support for the xbox I’m a Xbox gamer through and through and will continue to support it as I believe they’re definitely going to be rolling out some sweet features in the future not to mention awesome exclusives !.

Titanfall is definitely more anticipated, as it is expected to be a game changer for FPS (not saying i think that, and please don’t start a discussion about it, but most people do think it). Destiny is also a huge release, just a little smaller than Titanfall..

I think what people are more excited for (and not so much that it’s a “game changer”) is that you have a lot of choices to make with a lot of freedom to do it in. Having your Titan follow you or do you ride in it? Go on foot and setup traps with backup titan players…

It’s different than what we have been playing over the last few years (at least us console guys, there hasn’t been anything with mechs in it for awhile, that’s good anyways). It just looks like fun, plain, running and gunning fun. As much as I like BF4, I do like to go back to CoD for the smaller run n gun gameplay. I like both games play types.

Why complain but then say the “early adopters” line? This is exactly what being an early adopter is, waiting for things to get added and fixed. Just how it goes. Do you realize most of the things you loved about the 360 were added in over they many years it’s been out?

As for the Netflix “judder”, it happens on the ps4 as well so I don’t know if it’s a Netflix thing or an app thing, but I have noticed it more now on both systems than I have ever in the past. Luckily it only lasts a few seconds but it is annoying. Wonder if it’s part of the “super hd” codec they are using. I also agree on the BR player, that does need an update. Some movies are ok while others the sound sync is all out of whack.

just fyi, ist not just netflix, its all streaming video, xbox video, netflix, amazon, etc. This as eurogamer said, xb1 should never have been released with this problem. This is not a systemwide issue on the ps3 ps4, or xbox 360. We have every right to be upset about this major issue in a system designed to be an all-in-one media device.

judder/frame drops is happening across all streaming apps, this should be priority #1… i understand the other stuff (battery life indicator, storage mgmt etc) is needed, but not nearly as much as fixing the framedrops/judder plaguing the system

Yeah my old blu ray player used to make my surround sound set what ever the disk is for e.g if a disk is DTS HD the surround sound will switch to it.

I think the cause of my blu ray audio out of sync problem is having the xbox one set to DTS HD and then playing a blu ray disk that is DTS HD and then the xbox one is getting confused

The better they optimize the console and the better the devs get with the architecture, the easier it will get. I own both consoles trust me as of now I see no difference. If I saw a big noticeable difference I would begin playing my ps4 more.

Kojima said that the performance difference between the two consoles was negligible. And if you claim to see a noticeable visual difference between 1080p and 900p from 10 feet away on a 50″ TV then I’ll just outright call you a liar.

        Like

      • Riddick Snipes

Just cause a person might not notice that its clearer doesn’t mean it ain’t. Its more about matching the screens native Res so u can do away with upscaling. What ur saying is that no one would notice if bluray movies started to come out in 900p. Anyone with a TV over 50 inch would especially want 1080p. So what’s the point of 4k. Have u seen a 4k demo on a 4k TV in the stores. R u saying there’s no diff from 1080p!

        1080p has 44% more detail than 900p. R u saying that wouldn’t count on a big TV?

      • Allan

If you tv is around 50″ and you’re sitting 10ft away, then yup. Obviously there’s a technical difference, but how sensitive do you think the human eye really is? I think 720 and 1080 can be noticed, especially with weak AA. But 900 and 1080 with good upscaling? I think you’d be hard pressed. Clearly this is situational. If you got a bigger screen and sit closer, you’ll want the higher def. I have 55″ at about 7 ft away. So its borderline for me. But if u asked me what my best looking game is, I’d say Ryse, which runs at 900. Not Forza at 1080. People are making a bigger deal out of resolution than it warrants. Lighting, shadows, shading and AA are more important.

        Like

      • Allan

There’s a significant difference between 4k vs 1080 compared to 1080 vs 900. Especially when the 4k demo is probably on a 80+ inch tv you’re standing 6 ft away from. I saw the screen comparisons for AC4. If you mixed them up and asked people which was which. I doubt most people could tell.

True. Look all I’m saying is 1080p requires a certain amount of power to render. The ps4 seems to have that power. And I’m not talking bout easy to achieve 1080p games like FIFA or NBA.

With this first Gen of games i don’t expect the xb1 to hit 1080 as much. The PS4 has more graphical processing power. That’s plain. Its games will always look a bit better or run a bit faster. I’m just not convinced the difference is going to have a negative effect on the experience. Were not talking ps3 vs Wii performance gap. This Gen of console is as close as we’ve ever had. I expect great gaming to be had by all.

You seem like a cool dude. I’d would much rather talk about of than argue bout it. Anyone with a 1080p TV will b able to see a difference. A noticeable difference. With the 360 and ps3 they basically had the same power and people fickled over little things like different colours and stuff. But we are now talking about diff resolutions and fps. The one ain’t even in the same league as the ps4. Yeah sure the games might hit 1080p over time, but the ps4 will also get better over the same time. The difference we r seeing now will still b there five years from now. What country are u from? I’d love to hit u up for a chat bout this. Peace.

It’s not. It’s an insult to gamers to charge $100 more for a system that can’t even run games at 1080p without turning in to a slideshow while your competitor sells a systems for $100 less that is capable of more.

the ps4 and the xbox one use the EXACT SAME HARDWARE.
      the ONLY diffrences are these
      ram type
      OS type
      form factor type.
that’s it, the rest is done in firmware.
but the ps4 has been suffering from overheating, disc shattering drives…and oh yeah the now mandatory subscription to play online as well as the mandatory “let sony sell your personal information for advertising purposes”
the xbox one runs at a slightly slower speed and lower hd as well as frame lock for these reasons.
keeping heat to a managible level
      keeping noise to a minimum
I would rather have a system that’s 10% slower than ps4 to prevent system burnout and quiet running compaired to the noisy oven called the ps4.
yes the xbox one had a blue ray drive problem but the only drives thqat were affected were the ones made by sony and supplied to Microsoft.
now for my gripes about the xbox one
      overly complicated dashboard
ridiculas install sizes of games ….. seriously 50gig install for one game.
it took me 3 hours to install forza 5 and that’s install was supposed to have been 22gig but its freaking 39gig.
the multiple background windows is beyond a joke, they suck the ram in the system because they say the X1 has THREE OPERATING SYSTEMS RUNNING SIMUTAINUSLY.
WHY THREE whats wrong with one.
the difficulty in trying to find a single item from anywhere on the system.
cant we have the option on bringing back a simple non junk filled non flashy dashboard.
when the very first xbox came out the dashboard on that was a nightmare to use.
the very first 360 dashboard was so simple and easy to use
the second 360 dash was an eye opener, very cool and very easy to use.
the last 360 dash took away a TON of cool features to make it look like a tablet.
      bring the xbox360 NXE dash.
bring back the animated avatar on the dashboard as I think there slowly removing it from xbox entirely which is kinda like a slap in the face to everyone who spent money on avatar items.
also….why did they design the X1 with a trayless drive, there is a much higher chance of discs being broken as I already had to get my forza 5 and DR3 discs replaced.
but that’s my gripe….take it or leave it

People complaining about that this should have been in there before: Quit it. They put it in because they realized people didn’t like the way it was. They put it in to try and make it better for you, and now you’re complaining that it should have been there earlier. No, it couldn’t have been there earlier because they probably added these changes because of feedback from the community.

I do think it is good that other people are saying things they hope will be put in, because when you say you want it and a lot of people agree, it might just be heard and something may actually be done about it! (storage management and battery indicator are quite the examples of things everyone was talking about)

so on Feb 11 we will finally be at .5 of the launch OS beta for the Xbox One. March may be .75 – 1.0. not impressed for a $500 item.

Am I the only one who thinks the original launch OS was scrapped after the backlash of E3 and this was what they could get together quickly by launch?

I do enjoy the system, it just does not seem like this is an OS that had years of development behind it. I’m looking forward to the “NXE” type of upgrade we will see a few years from now.

Also, the stationary Nexus logo in the top right corner needs to go. It has no use and is going to cause burn in on my Plasma. Just have it show up occasionally and disappear 10-15 seconds after a “stop listening” command.
