New Xbox One System Update Begins Rolling Out Tonight

Tonight, we will begin rolling out the next Xbox One system update. Again, I’d like to thank all of the Xbox Live members who previewed features with us and shared some of their feedback. Their input helped shape this system update, and we look forward to expanding our list of previewing Xbox Live members in the coming months.

Here’s the final breakdown of the features rolling out to Xbox One systems starting tonight and over the next few days:

  • Game and app saves and updates. A game save progress bar will show you the status of your game saves. You will also be able to easily tell what games and apps are being updated or have been updated recently.
  • Friends improvements. Notifications will be added to see when favorites and friends sign in to Xbox Live. This was one of the most frequently requested features, so we made it a priority to include it in this update. Also, friends who are in multiplayer will be identified in the friends list.
  • Kinect voice and motion improvements will continue to be fine-tuned for quality and reliability of Xbox One commands. For example, we’ve updated some of the gesture functionality to reduce false positives on non-hand objects triggering gesture commands.
  • Improved GameDVR video quality through compression algorithm improvements.
  • Blu-ray player supports 50 Hz video output for content recorded at 50 Hz. We’ll also be updating the Blu-ray Player app in the coming days to round out these improvements.
  • Controller and headset adaptor firmware updates will reduce audio static and improve wireless connectivity.
  • Silent reboot after system updates and system update on demand now available. If your console is in Instant On mode, the update will happen automatically and return to standby upon completion. This means you won’t need to power on your console after an update moving forward. If you want to take future updates when available without waiting for your console to do it on its own, we’ve added this option under system settings and you’ll be able to use it next update. It will only show as available when there is an update to take.
Friends Notifications

Thanks again for everyone’s feedback on particular features previewed these past few months and keep the feedback coming.

Jesus christ. Forza 5 runs at 1080p, do you really think the Xbox can’t handle Trials at 1080p? Seriously? You’re a joke. Switch to your PS4 – because the PS3 was up and running perfectly at launch, right? Jesus, you people are ridiculous.

Ya no idea why Trials isn’t 1080p. But it’s a developer issue not hardware. This time next year it will be all 1080p once the devs are more comfortable programming for the system.

        Like

    • Matthew Bunton

Sadly I seriously doubt it as there are hardware and technical limitations with the Xbox One. It is a shame but hopefully Microsoft will have some great games in the future to make up for it.

grassyknoll summarised the issue best on Eurogamer’s website he wrote. ‘Most modern games use a modern technique known
as deferred rendering to form their games. Games that use this type of
rendering need a frame buffer thats at least 48MB for 1080p (but can be
far far higher 48MB). The max a frame buffer can be on the Xbox One is
32MB, so resolution & effects have to be toned down to fit.
Microsoft knew that most modern multiplatform games would use deferred
rendering & went with 32 MB ESRAM anyway. This isn’t developers /
      Sony’s / Nintendo’s or anyone elses fault.’

His explanation makes a great deal of sense and has been confirmed by many other technically minded people. The main point is that Microsoft built a media box first and games console second.

Yeah, I’m gonna switch to ps4 I think, my friends already have

        Like

      • Death Dealer

That is correct, but not the entire picture. Developers don’t necessarily have to only use the eSRAM as a framebuffer and can combine both DDR3 (slower, but can easily be used for streaming and tiling resources) and the eSRAM. This does however require a lot of reprogramming to make it work if an engine isn’t suited for it to begin with.
Using only the eSRAM for the moment is the quick and easy way to do it and MS should have anticipated this a little more. But keep in mind if the APU die would have contained 64MB on it, it would have been a trainwreck to dissipate the heat and would have led to other problems. Scaling the picture from 900p to 1080p is not that much image degredation, especially with the correct techniques.
Games being 900p on the Xbox One at the moment are due to two things. MS being late with their SDK optimizations (DirectX12 only releasing late 2015 with samples coming out only late this year) and developers not willing or not being able to optimize due to buget/time constraints.
The Xbox One is very much capable of rendering games at 1080p/60fps with all kinds of bells and whistles, but developers are unable to produce them because of this. MS release parity clause is also a problem in this case as MS would rather have the game released at the same time than later on with optimizations (that’s why you see resolution increasing patches).

        Like

      • Matthew Bunton

Thank you for expanding upon that I feel that I have a better overall understanding of the issue now.

Agreed I find 900p perfectly acceptable as a gaming resolution and feel that too much is being made of hitting 1080p.

There is also a lot of misinformation going around so hopefully these posts will explain a little better to everyone.

Takes too long for it all to load. It’s not about button presses it’s about the clunky UI. I expected this new generation of consoles to be fast loading and snappy. Instead it seems slower than the 360. Feels like everything you press has to load a separate app rather than the 360 where everything just feels meshed together.

No, it was not, it took a while to load. It takes far less time to just tell the system to go there with your voice.

        Like

      • wookster

except to invite a friend to a party you must load the friend app, find the friend, then wait for the friend’s page thing to load which usually takes longer than it should and then you have to go to send, then to invite. On the 360 you opened the guide, went to friends, scrolled down and pressed x to invite them and bam. Not to mention you then have to wait for the party to snap and load because if you just close out of it before it’s loaded then it doesn’t actually put you into the chat until you snap it again. Voice or no voice, the 360’s guide menu was a lot easier and faster than the xbox one’s system.

You can then throw on top of that the risk of your game crashing in the process (bf4 and pvz:GW)

FATX has a limit of about 2TB. There is a file size issue with it, not a file system issue.
There also used to be an issue with the USB drives being over 16GB large too, but that was fixed and thus the limit raised to 32GB.

What’s so different between external hard drive and the one they ship with the 360 to cause a problem? USB is slower then SATA but I think that’s all there is to it. At the very least they could allow multiple 32gb partitions on the same drive.

        Like

      • Death Dealer

The 360 reserves space on USB devices by making hidden folders and adding padded files to them to reserve that 32GB of space. The limitation is arbitrary and I hope MS doesn’t make the same mistake with the Xbox One.
USB Flash memory can be faster than the SATA hard drive in the system, but there is a bandwith limitation on that too because of the reservation for Kinect.

At least you get 1000 gamerscore on X1. On PS4, this particular game has no Platinum and only 12 trophies. So FOR ONCE I will be buying a multiplatform game on Xbox One.

Any chance we’ll get an audio setting to output game audio through Speakers AND headset (a la the Xbox 360) for us livestreamers so we don’t have to use the Kinect mic for chat?

    • Cryra

that’s not already in? Well, it took 5 months to be notified when our friends are online, so I’m not surprised.

Unless you have the Kinect Microphone turned on, any game capture devices (like my Elgato), won’t be able to pick up the system sounds or game audio when you have something plugged into the Optical Audio out port.

It’s a relatively simple fix, I’d imagine (as it was added to the 360 relatively early on in its life cycle). But I have yet to receive word on it even after contacting support and the Major directly about this issue.:/

I hope the auto reboot doesn’t turn on TVs and leave them on. I had to turn off the feature because I came downstairs once to findy tv had been on for some time. Hreat way to burn out a bulb.

If your tv is off and you tell your xbox to turn off, it will trigger the TV to turn on. That’s a problem hopefully that will be addressed sometime in the future. The system itself though, does not auto reboot for anything, unless it prompts you that it will be doing so.

The “auto-reboot” you’re commenting about isn’t an auto reboot. It’s a change to the way updates worked. Previously when you were in standby mode, when an update hit, you had to manually turn the system on. The problem was that people didn’t know when updates would hit and would think the “Xbox, On” feature was just being unresponsive. Now it’s as if nothing ever happened and you turn on your system as you normally would, whichever way you prefer.

Most TVs use a single command for turn on or off. So his concern is valid

The system should never reach the final boot stage though.

How about the crashing or hanging up in between apps 3-4 times a week? Do other people experience this with their box? Or how about it taking 30 seconds to get to the friends list? The Kinect sensor can’t find my floor. Does this update fix that?

Been in this preview for awhile this is by far the best update they have done, sign on notifications is the best thing added back to xbox since launch. System feels way more connected with the sign on toasts. Hopefully we get a nice DLNA/USB background music player in the next update. xD

you can set it so it only notifies you when your favourite friends come online, no need to have sign in notifications turned on for everyone.

That wont ever happen, because the xbox one offer a favorites only option when it coms to sign on notifications. So you only see who you want. I use All friends option because i like to see the popup all the time.

Indeed. (Sorry to be out of subject here, but it is interesting) You are right and it will include some games paired with their “DLC”. We could add that there will be downloadable contents for State of Decay, Wolf Among Us, Pac Man CE DX, Saints Row IV, Tropico IV, Batman Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, amidst others.

Still no external storage support. I think it will never happen. And there’d better be a way to turn off friend online notifications independently, since not having constant friend notifications that sounded like achievements was the most welcome change with the X1 interface. If you made friend notification sound like an achievement again, EPIC FAIL.

There’s just one epic fail and that’s PS4.

      Like

      • ryder4life22187

The epic fail is the XB1. You really think all these price cuts and bundled free games are because it’s a success. My store still has over 6 units left from launch of the XB1.

        Like

      • ImTheMetalLord

And ‘your store’ is a direct reflection on the whole world? I think I would prefer a larger data pool before I made such a broad statement.

        Like

      • ryder4life22187

Never said it was. But I can say there are countless people on here who have said similar things and also have said stores they’ve been to are flooded with XB1’s. You don’t need a larger data pool to figure it out that the XB1 is failing when they’ve been getting price cuts and have to bundle a game just to sell a unit.

        Like

      • ImTheMetalLord

Supply doesn’t determine fail or success anyways. Maybe MS simply has a better strategy to make sure that the supply doesn’t dwindle. I’m not defending a position here I’m just saying your data is flawed to make such a broad statement.

Also when it comes to gaming consoles it’s not where you start that matters its where you finish and I believe there is a lot of forward thinking that went into the One that is not available on the PS4. See you in 2 or 3 years and then we’ll decide fail or success. Way to early to call it IMO.

      • ryder4life22187

MS main problem is they need to get away from the cable aspect of the XB1. We buy consoles to play games for the most part and happen to watch movies/shows on the side. Until MS figures it out and puts games first, and gets rid of those ads on the dashboard I don’t seem them progressing very much. Until then I don’t see the point of owning one as my TV can download and play games as well like the XB1.

We never got true external support storage for the 360, as 32gb doesn’t count. I doubt MS will do anything about it and they will dodge it for as long as they can. Unless their is some kind of security flaw that they don’t want found yet.
