More Than 45 New Apps Coming to Xbox

As of the latest Xbox One system update, currently rolling out worldwide, everyone with an Xbox has access to all of our available entertainment experiences. And that lengthy list is about to get significantly longer – today we’re pleased to announce that our app catalog will increase by nearly 25%, bringing the tally to more than 225 apps around the world.

One addition I’d like to highlight is the way Twitter will be integrated into Xbox One’s TV experience. U.S. viewers will have the ability to see Tweets related to whatever cable or satellite TV shows you’re watching as they’re happening. Take a look:

Another exciting new feature coming to Xbox One is the first Vine app made for TV. Not only will you be able to watch all your favorite Vine videos on the biggest screen in your house, you’ll be able to share gameplay videos from Upload Studio as a Vine.

There are plenty more new apps on the way as well – 46, to be exact. For the full list of upcoming apps, click over to Xbox Wire.

More then 225 apps around the world? Why does the UK only have like 12 then lol. I hope we get Sky go / player and iplayer.

Sky NOW TV is coming, sadly no mention of BBC iPlayer:/
Still too US centric, with 32 of those 45 coming to the US, 13 to the UK.

As it has always been the case, will expect only a few

So the Xbox One didn’t really set out to compete with Playstation, they set out to compete with Roku, Apple TV, and Kindle Fire.

Microsoft would have been far better off releasing a cheap, dedicated set top box Roku killer that could link up to the existing Kinect, and focus Xbox One on being the most powerful console for gaming and priced more competitively. Instead they went jack of all trades. This would have been especially smart considering in real use, I have yet to see a case where Kinect 2.0 is better or more accurate than my original Kinect, aside from some finger recognition.

And now it looks like the next Apple TV box, with Apple having purchased the original company behind Kinect, will essentially be just what I described above and will capture that market, considering it will cost way less than the Xbox One but will probably run every iPad app using gesture recognition in place of touch.

They set out to compete with everybody. That’s what the leaked PPT revealed years ago. There’s only one way MS can fix that, and that is with a multi-tiered console generation, having a more powerful box every 2 or 3 years and cheapening the h*ll out of the previous model. They could keep everything compatible that way and be competitive on all the fronts they want to.
At least it’s not a total problem as we’ve now seen that even the PS4 only has a 1.6TFLOP GPU without the GP part and the dev kits had a GPU which was at least twice as powerful, which is why Watch Dogs shown at E3 2012 “on PS4” looked so much better than it does now. This is a .5 gen at best and console gaming is going to change drastically from what we’ve known it to be for the past 3 decades.

Excellent post, I wholeheartedly agree with you. At E3 2012 it was probably running on a PC running a prelim PS4 devkit. Faster gens would be nice, actually, especially on the Xbox side.

I think they actually want to be the one system that you need so that you don’t have to have several systems hooked up to your TV. I even think that is the reason behind the name ONE.

      Like

      • Death Dealer

It is, but competing on so many fronts requires a different strategy to succeed. You can’t have one box that lasts 10 years with the competition releasing another one every year (Apple).
Scaling the hardware upwards every few years is the only solution if they truly want to stick on that path and the only way to stop the inferior console perception by the fanboys.

No they set out to offer more options for people. I use apps when I’m not gaming on the machine. Consoles offer more than gaming now it’s not just Xbox doing it.

I still just want some basic Video playing functionality on the XboxOne. As it stands, the only way to view videos/movies/music on my local network, is to open them up on a Windows8 box and use the “Play To” option… Which is far from ideal and means I still use my Xbox360 for basic local network media.

Is it too much to ask that this basic feature of the Xbox360 (available since day one on the system) be added to the XboxOne? Or maybe a Plex/XBMC app?

US centric as always. While I understand it, It’s hugely disappointing to see some pretty basic experiences that are available outside of the US do not come to Xbox consoles outside of the US.

There are far more people outside of the USA than inside. I wish that would figure in sometimes.
