Xbox One Update: New Media Player App, SmartGlass Features, and More Rolling Out Today

Today, we will begin rolling out new features and updates to Xbox One for fans all over the world. These updates include new ways to bring your personal media to your Xbox, updates to the party system, more ways to interact with your Xbox, and new social features for Xbox SmartGlass. We highlighted some of these new features earlier this month at gamescom, and based on continuous fan feedback, we’re pleased to announce the list of the features rolling out to Xbox One systems over the next few days:

  • A new Media Player app: Play media files from an attached USB device with the new media player app – DNLA support for home media servers coming soon. Xbox One will support more formats than Xbox 360, including support for dozens of new file formats like Mpeg 2 TS, animated gifs and MKV, which will be added by the end of the year.
  • Party on in the new and improved Party App: Be the leader of your party with the new party leader setting. As the party leader, you can change whether the party requires invitations and you can remove others from the party. The updated app also lets you see what activities everyone in your party is doing and who is playing in the same game with you in addition to being able to quickly perform common actions like muting, joining, or sending game invites.
  • New features for SmartGlass: You can now post status messages from the Activity Feed and comments, or share items from both your Activity Feed and Game Clips. Along with the new comment and share features, a personalized Activity Feed has been added to your profile and messages have been updated to a new layout supporting a full conversation view. Additionally, we are adding the ability to record game clips directly from the Now Playing bar. Finally, for users who upgrade the app directly, we have introduced a What’s New page highlighting the features of each release.
  • “Xbox On” capabilities in Australia, Canada (French), Italy, Spain, and Mexico: New regions will have the ability to use the “Xbox On” Kinect voice command to power on their consoles when they’re in connected standby (Instant On) mode.
  • OneGuide comes to Brazil, Mexico, Austria, and Ireland: The ability to configure live TV listings will be available to all customers in these four countries. Also coming to these markets is the ability to use OneGuide and the Universal Remote Control in SmartGlass.
  • Boot to TV: Now Xbox One owners will be able to set their console to boot directly to television when coming out of connected standby.
  • Bandwidth Usage Display: Bandwidth Usage will show users how much bandwidth their Xbox One is consuming over a period of time, a useful tool for those who want to track against bandwidth caps set by ISPs in certain markets.
  • GameDVR deletes: Users will be able to choose multiple GameDVR clips to delete at once in the Upload app.
  • Save your Avatar Gamerpic: A new option to save Avatar Gamerpics to users’ OneDrive.

Please continue to share your feedback on our dedicated Xbox Feedback site and you might see your suggestions become a reality in future system updates. Look out for new features lighting up consoles in our preview program in the coming weeks.

How can I play my game full screen while streaming music in the background? I don’t want to see the snap bar on the side!

Downloaded the update and was surprised to see… nothing. No changes whatsoever.
I realise Major said features would be added over the coming days, but I expected at least something new.
I downloaded the Media Player Preview. Not sure what good it is sincemy Xbox doesn’t recognise any USB HDD I plug into it. Tried 3 working USB3.0 drives… nothing. The console doesn’t even acknowledge them.

Now did I download a bad update or does this update do absolutely nothing right now? Serious question…

I think the drive has to be formatted to fat32 like it had to be to work on the 360… Mine is like that and it works

I was excited… then I plugged my MICROSOFT zune into my MICROSOFT XBox 1 and it doesn’t register as existing. But my thumb drive seems to work fine for reading music files. I’m at a loss for words right now… And every time I think of something to say, it’s something I probably shouldn’t write down here… So, Major, where’s my support for my MP3 player (your brand) ? Please tell me support for that will be coming, and it was just a little oversight🙂

please add a sleep timer to the tv app. Currently you can set the console to goto sleep due to inactivitty, but the tv counts as activity to the console doesnt turn off if you are watching live tv. I like many other people often fall asleep watching tv. I cant set the sleep timer on the tv set but even if the tv turns off the console will stay on as long as the tv app is running.

Interesting that the update I was waiting for is not even mentioned anywhere here or on the XB1 pages. The Blu-ray now does 3D. That means I can retire one more device to the kids room. Maybe you should mention this, even if it is only one sentence.

If you want to turn this feature on go to Settings, then Display and Sound. check the “Allow 3D” box and confirm when you see a 3D image on the screen.

The media player is great but it needs to be playable in the background and needs to support more file types.

I was excited until I realised I can’t play any of my music since it’s all in .m4a (Apple Lossless).

Is there any chance of driver support being added for Logitech gaming equipment. I have a Logitech g930 wireless gaming headset which I would like to use with my Xbox one, but as of yet it is only supported by pc.

The x1 uses the optical connection to output sound to my turtle beach cod ghost phantom. I checked yours on logitech and they dont appear to use that, how do they plug into the sound output on your pc.
X1 does the game audio wirelessly .
and chat can only be done thru the controllers seperate microsoft adapter add on (which is about £20) 3.5mm socket to the headphones via cable.

The Logitech G930 uses a usb wireless receiver. It is mainly a pc gaming headset. But due to having 7.1 Dolby digital surround sound where all the speakers in the headset can be adjusted volume wise it needs the Logitech G Software in order to do this, also programmable macro keys. Without the software none of this can be done, also the 7.1 surround sound does not work without it. So far the only 2 systems/devices I found it to works on is the PC because that is what it is design for with full functionality, that’s the obvious one lol. 2nd is a Google chrome book, but this has limited functionality, macro keys do not work and I only get standard audio no 7.1 surround sound. On Xbox one when plugged in the headset and receiver connect, but no sound or functionality. I’m hoping that they do add support for this at some point, due to it being a £150 gaming headset and it is far by the best headset that I have used to date, in terms of sound and build quality, also very comfortable to wear. But I ain’t getting my hopes up lol. It would jst be nice if it did work that’s all.

Have you checked the audio settings on the x1 as i had to change mine to bitstreamout and dolby digital to get surround sound otherwise you just get stereo, but. Thats mainly cos of the optical ouput from my x1 to my base unit.

So…. I can plug in a flash drive to play music, but when I plug in my Windows Phone it tells me “No devices found”… Kind of ironic when you think about it. Please see about fixing this.

    Like

    • Jez Gregg

Its because they still doing the dlna testing prob to make sure the system is secure from hacking.
You can use wireless from your phone, if it has send to tv, which then opens the xbox music app to play it or the video app for movies.
see my twitter @j3zm0n7e for examples. Tho without subscription it only works for so long i have discovered.
