Xbox One March System Update: Party Chat Improvements, Screenshots and More Now Available

This month’s system update on Xbox One brings you some of the most-requested features by our fans including screenshots and improved tile transparency. We heard great things from members of the  Xbox One preview program following their sneak preview and are excited to bring these great new features to everyone on Xbox One today.

Check out the list of features in the March system update that are starting to roll out tonight:

Screenshots – You can now take screenshots on your Xbox One console by simply double-tapping the Xbox button on your controller to capture a screenshot and pressing Y to save the screenshot. You can also say “Xbox, take a screenshot” to take and save a screenshot.

Upload app – You can manage your screenshots in addition to your game clips in the Upload app. To set a screenshot as your background, go to Upload, open the screenshot full screen, press the Menu button, and select Set as background. You can also use Upload to share screenshots to your activity feed, attach them to messages, add screenshots to your showcase, share to Twitter, and post to OneDrive.

Suggested friends – To find new friends, go to Friends and look for people under the Suggested friends heading or select the Suggested friends Or, if you don’t have a ton of friends yet, just check the Friends area of Home.

Sharing your name – Gamertags are still the primary method of identifying yourself on Xbox Live, but sharing your real name helps people recognize you who might not know you by your gamertag. The new name sharing options can be found under Friends > My profile > Name sharing settings.

Party chat enhancements – We added two new icons to party chat to show each participant their own microphone status. The Kinect icon means the Kinect is being used as the mic and the headset icon means the headset mic is being used.

Tile transparency – We’re adding a setting to vary the level of transparency for your background images. To do this, go to Settings > My Xbox > Tile transparency.

Voice search privacy – We added a new setting to share voice search data to allow anonymous collection and analysis of voice data when using Bing on Xbox to search. Go to Settings > Privacy and online safety > Custom > Share voice search data to change the setting.

Report spam – The Messages app has an added option to notify Xbox when you receive spam. To report a message as spam, select it, press A on the controller, select Report, and then choose Spam.

Live TV & OneGuide in Australia – Support for OneGuide is now available to all users in Australia for free-to-air TV listings. Additionally, the OneGuide app will be pre-pinned for users in Australia a few days after the March system update goes live.

Xbox One Digital TV Tuner in Australia – Xbox One owners in Australia can pre-purchase the Xbox Digital TV Tuner at the online Microsoft Store, Availability of the tuner is planned for March 25, 2015.

More system updates with cool new features are coming your way soon, so stay tuned for more details. Keep sending us your feedback!

eh? there is something like 20 channels broadcast via DVB-T here. Three are using h.264 AVC for high definition, the rest are all MPEG-5 standard definition. Nothing unusual – the australian tuner would work fine here without any changes. Microsoft just needs to ship a few over and turn the software on.

Still want to see the ability to either disable the power button or make it a two or three second hold to work. Might seem like a small thing, but those with small children (or pets) likely know the frustration a brushed button can cause.

        Haha, lucky you.

This time last year we were in Germany for my wife’s job. My oldest son (a little over one at the time) would not let you turn the One off. As soon as you did he’d immediately turn it back on.

When we arrived back in the states in late June it was just the opposite. As soon as I turned it on he’d run over and turn it off, haha. That took about three weeks to break. He’s mostly outgrown it (although I was 20-2 in a game of HC KC on CoD and he shut me down recently, haha), but I have a soon to be crawling 4 month old that I have to worry about now. :)

Yeah my dog gets pissed all the time when I’m not paying her attention and goes and turns off the xbox mid-game.. it’s quite annoying especially considering load times!

Please may we get an option to disable games from automatically recording useless DVR clips such as what Battlefield or FIFA does? This is so annoying especially when the clip being uploaded lags me when I’m playing online.

Thanks for this great update and looking forward to DirectX 12!!

Yeah I figured but that would mean, take snapshot, go to upload, upload to OneDrive, go to onedrive on my phone before I can finally download…wheeeww.
The app just downloading would be sooo much simpler.

      • Bobo Tapia

Yes it would be simpler, but its an option.

Some decent stuff here. But when we gonna be able to turn off notification sounds? I’ve never been a fan of the boop. Especially when I forget to turn them off before watching a movie (cuz I like having them on at all other times).

Also, we ever gonna get the “busy” status? It’s nice having something that tells friends you wont see their messages/invites, preventing possible complaing from them later on lol

And how about not dimming the wallpaper? Or let us adjust that.

And how’s the backwards compatability comin along? I know you guys are at least looking into it.

Backwards compatibility will only be possible through a streaming service (Xbox Direct would be my choice for a name). The Xbox One hardware isn’t powerful enough to emulate a 360.
Hope they don’t entirely go the PSNow route though.

How would a system with at least 8 times more power not be able to emulate 360? Makes no sense.

Those words mean nothing to me since I’m an average computer user. But I did read a discussion earlier that made a lot of sense.

I’ll explain it a bit better then, for the layman. The code the previous generation’s processors used (RISC PowerPC) isn’t compatible with the one in the new consoles (CISC x86). Therefore translating that code comes at a performance loss. Then there is the problem that games on consoles become so optimized that they become dependant on specifics in the hardware like the clockspeed of the CPU. The CPU in the Xbox One has 1,75GHz clock frequency without multithreading, the Xbox 360 had 3,2GHz frequency and supported multithreading as well. Even with the cores in the One being much more performant on the lower clock speeds, these are the prime things that hamper direct emulation at full speed on the Xbox One.

Hopefully other people read that, since, as I said, I’ve already read an explaination. Much appreciated, though =)

But that is exactly the route PlayStation Now is. If Microsoft added any streaming it would be copying PlayStation Now. Stealling Sony’s ideas is all Microsoft can do. PS4 is the better console.

Hey folks. I’m in the Xbox Preview Program. Great additions added for this month!:-) I’m looking forward to seeing what’s in April’s update.😀

Anyways, want an invite to the preview program? Get at me on Xbox. Gamertag: TrilogyDG503

I can send an invite out to Microsoft via the preview dashboard. Its soley up to them if they accept the invite. We preview updates, rate them and report any bugs among other perks. Its a neat program.

    Happy gaming folks!
