First Wave of Xbox One April System Updates Now in Preview

This month, we’re rolling out updates to our Xbox One Preview program members in two waves, with the first set coming today and more to come next week. Check out the list below for features in this first April system update preview that is starting to roll out this afternoon:

  • Party chat improvements – Party chat is being improved with troubleshooting guidance for Xbox One owners. The Party App will help you get your microphone enabled and show you when privacy settings or networking issues are blocking communication with particular party members.
  •  Game hub links – Members can more easily discover game hub content from activity feed items. You’ll see activity feed items when any of your friends follow a game, and you’ll also be able to get back to a game’s hub from activity feed posts related to the game – including feed items about the game’s achievements, game clips and screenshots. Finally, we’ve added a link to game hubs from the game’s page in the achievements app.
  •  Achievement notifications – With this preview release, you’ll also see the achievement’s description in the notification so you know what you did to earn this achievement without having to open the achievements app. If you do choose to open up the notification to see the achievement details, we’ve also made some performance improvements to make loading the achievements app from a notification faster.

Stay tuned next week for the second wave with even more great features coming to Xbox One Preview program members. As always, thanks for your feedback.

I’m guessing the background music, enhancements to the media player, and a few other fixes will come when Win10 integration occurs this summer. I just wish MS would let us know soon what this integration entails, instead of leaving us out of the loop feeling like they are ignoring us.

I’m bored of Party Chat improvements – I personally think the party chat either needs to be reworked from the ground up. It was awful originally, and it still has issues getting people talking to each other.

Game hub links – I just don’t get the obsession with updating the game hub. I know it’s a game console, but Microsoft seem obsessed with that game hub and achievements. Why are achievements so important when there are so many functionality improvements that could be made.

To answer my own question, I can only assume the Xbox/Windows 10 integration and mother-of-all-updates is being worked on feverishly in the background and they don’t want to work on anything ‘important’ that could all go flocks-a-flying when the big updates come around. Still, as a WIndows 10 Fast-track updater it’d be nice to see some of that streaming goodness come along. I don’t mind if it’s buggy during the development stages, just as long as we get to all get enough time to feed back to Microsoft the issues from our point of view and get them fixed before launch.

p.s. I’d love to get into the Xbox preview program. As a developer now running Windows 10 and the latest of everything I can (pre-release Windows Phone 10 as well) it’d be great to get hold of the Xbox updates as well.

The handiest thing I’ve found of use for the game hubs is locating additional content and DLC for the game. The current mess the Xbox Store is in (and will only get worse in the coming months if Microsoft doesn’t get on it) is finding content easily there, especially DLC.

You could look at DLC previously by selecting the option that was previously there “See in Xbox Store”. Now it’s actually two clicks away instead of one.

Except that didn’t always work – many times it did not show all the available options.

Why are we still unable to silence the sound effects in the menu system. This has been on every other gaming system, PS4 has it!!! I do not want to chear constant beeping from 3 consoles in our house!

Very nice Achievements and Party Updates. 🙂
But I hope there will be more compatibility updates for TVs, soon. My new Orion TV is still not recognized with the last update and I have to turn it on/off separately. :/

But why is it so, that just the preview members are fetting these updates and no one else?

    • Burnt Offering

Because the updates are not currently available for the public, thus preview members get to preview the update. 🙂

You are welcome. You can get into the program a few ways. On occasion folks form MS like Mr. Hyrb offer codes on their Twitter accounts. Sometimes codes are offered at MS sponsored events. Or if you have a friend in the program they can refer (invite) you to the program, but that does not guarantee that you will be accepted.

I see. I unfortunately don’t have any friends that are in the preview program. But nevermind. I’ll watch out for Mr.Hrybs tweets then. Thank you again

easy to use private chat…like the switchboard system the 360 had…SLEEP timer..MS wants the ONE to control everything, how about adding a basic function that a 15 year old TV has…..and last of all EASY sharing of pics on ONE DRIVE…What, are you my nanny like Nintendo?….For all their Social capability crowing, XBOX ONE has the social media sharing skills of a 1998 flip phone…

I was in the preview program since day one, but opted out a couple months back because of issues with others who were not in the preview program (didn’t have the same console update). It became a hassle w/ joining games and chat not working. Unless that is all fixed now, i don’t know.

I think the main thing that needs an update is snapping xbox music and or having it run in the background. Who cares about how long an achievement pops up for or the description..really? Work on the bigger things that gamers want. Hopefully they are and those will come soon enough.

As much as we appreciate the functional improvements – it would be great if we could get details of the stuff “under the hood” that the update fixes. For example, any progress of improving the overall speed of the interface – it is like treacle.
