Xbox One April System Update: Voice Messages, Party Chat Updates and More Now in Preview

You may have noticed a few new features that rolled out to preview over the weekend, including game hub links and more detailed achievement notifications. Now this week, we’re bringing even more features to Xbox One in Preview, making it easier to keep in touch with friends on Xbox One or Xbox 360.

Check out the list below for features in the April preview update that are starting to roll out tonight:

  • Voice messages – Xbox One preview program members will be able to compose and playback voice messages in the messages app when snapped on Xbox One. Quickly and easily record audio to send to your friends or others through your snapped messages app accessed through a simple quick double tap of the Xbox button. Additionally, voice messages can be exchanged between Xbox 360 and Xbox One consoles.
  •  Dedicated servers for party chat – We’re enhancing party chat with dedicated chat relay servers that will enable Xbox One owners that may have historically had NAT issues to party chat more reliably. Parties where players are unable to form direct peer-to-peer connections for party chat will automatically leverage dedicated server infrastructure to relay traffic. This service is only enabled for parties where one or more members are previewing the April system update.
  • What’s On – The Xbox engineering team is continuing to experiment with the What’s On area, which highlights popular videos, movies, TV shows and game broadcasts. We’re continuing to test different experiences for preview members in the U.S. and this month, the preview of this feature is being expanded to Canada and the UK as well.

Keep sending us your feedback and we’ll keep working on bringing you the latest and greatest features on Xbox One.

Are you sure? Quality is the same for me (play both yet).

They are entirely different. A voice message is not a direct connection to the other player. Player A records a message. Message is then converted to an audio file. From there, it is just a file transfer to Player B.

Party Chat currently requires either a direct connection to the other player, matching audio protocols, etc.

The other part of the update, “Dedicated servers for party chat”, could actually make this more feasible. The dedicated server could handle any connections and transcoding to make both platforms happy. But it would also require a major update to the Xbox 360’s OS to allow this new functionality. So it may come down whether or not it is worth the time and effort to update the Xbox 360.

It’s just a matter of an update in both consoles. It is not impossible.

It makes a whole lot of sense!
There have been a number of times when I didn’t even know certain events, offers etc were trending until it appeared on the dashboard.

This is useful, as I would have carried on in ignorance.

Instead of me just choosing what’s on my Dashboard according to my known interests, having ‘What’s On’ makes things more discoverable.

        I like this tab too.
I don’t like too much the layout of the OS, but I can handle it. The 360 OS is sooo much better… ç_ç

Do you report them? You can report people for harassment, it is against the terms of service. If it is constantly the same person contact support, they’ll take care of it.

      • http://karza.co.vu/ xX Karza Xx

I know how the reporting system works.I’ve been on XBL for 7+ years.I do report them, but I think enforcement takes longer to deal with harassment by voice than harassment by text.

Reporting them doesn’t stop the message in the first place though, and it doesn’t stop the next creepy guy from sending me one.I can only be happy with the knowledge that maybe I’ve stopped him from bothering the next girl.

% of female gamer population that I’ve played with that quits halfway through COD Ghosts Extinction: nearly 99%. I thought women were supposed to be the more “team” oriented of the species. 0% of them were harassed. They just quit with nary a word. You quit on me, I ding your rep.

      Like

      • slasaru

There can be different cases why people quit – it could be an internet problem, disconnection or the network at home too busy because of the other family members connecting to watch something online. And many of the girls are not so profound on network settings.
So your “ding your rep” is the same act of harassment as them quitting.
You should do it only after you have some multiple proof they have a habit of this. That’s my humble opinion. Network no-lifers could have some other, like total intolerance

      • Marcus Roof

This game (and others) tells you whether they time out. I’m not talking about that. They just quit because they couldn’t be bothered to care…There is a “quit early” selection right in the rep section so obviously it isn’t an “act of harassment” to ding their rep – what an ignorant silly thing to say. “Quit early” is right there built into the Xbox One’s rep system. They want people to use it and I do because it warns other players (over time) that these people are a bunch of loser quitters (thus don’t play with them)…I’ve played in hundreds of matches and some guys do quit (and I’ll ding them too) but it’s overwhelming the girls who ALWAYS quit…and Extinction is not even a versus or competitive game type…Actually come to think of it, the most rude person I ever met in Extinction was a female who said “eff you dude I’ve got completionist” and then quit immediately.

If there isn’t one already, there should be some kind of privacy setting regarding receiving voice messaging. I can’t imagine this system being implemented without the option to block voice messages from people not on your friends list. I’ve only received a few distasteful voice messages on X360, but they didn’t brighten my day to say the least, so I can only imagine having it on a somewhat regular basis.

@Xx karza..i think your trying to find an issue with good people. I simply was being true to myself, and being that my family has gone through things like this, too, please stop thinking we are trying to fill your friends list. Some are reaching out to a gamer that needs good friends, so rather then be a creeper and add her with out her knowing, they simply put themselves out there to let her know they’re are good people, sometime u have to ask or look… But to read into the fact men, which u have no idea who we are what my motive is, please think or ask us questions directed to me or those people rather than freely speak as if we are all one person its sad but if I were to go further id be pointing out other stuff, Taking actions is definitely the right step and I commend that… Keep it up, I have nothing to worry about cause I dont fit the flock as you call it..

Ever since the last update on the 21st my Xbox one can’t handle more than one download at a time. When I try to move two or more things into the queue, the system slows up and appears to freeze up until it catches up with itself. Something is very very wrong

Yeah, at the moment, muting everything/muting the tv is the only way to avoid hearing it. The noises are pointless unless you’re blind! If 360 and PS4 can manage it I really don’t get what the hold up is.

Instead of giving us arbitrary features like ‘whats on’, how about an option to disable the dashboard sound effects, like there is on the 360 and every other decent entertainment device on the market. I’m done being polite about this. It’s been an issue for seventeen months, it’s such an obvious flaw (especially when using snap), it’s easily fixed and with all due respect, it’s pathetic.
