Xbox 360 System Update for Preview Program Members – Now Supporting 2TB Hard Drives

Back in March we announced the Preview Program would expand to the Xbox 360 and work much like the Xbox One Preview Program – selected members would be able to sign-up directly from their Xbox 360 and once registered, have the opportunity to install system updates and experience the new or improved features before they release to the general audience. One of the most requested features at the Xbox Feedback website was for larger external storage for the Xbox 360.

The next update for Xbox 360 Preview Program members will allow the use of 2TB hard drives to store Xbox 360 data. If you are not part of the Preview program you will get this functionality later this year. In addition we will also no longer reserve space in advance on your hard drive.  If you are using 16GB of hard drive space for games – we will only take 16GB of space. And just like today – you will be able to use two external drives at a time.

Note: Some drives may be incompatible or have performance issues. If you already have space reserved for storing Xbox 360 data, you will need to clear the Xbox 360 storage to gain full access to the drive. If you are in the Preview program, please review the list of known issues before formatting your drive.

As a reminder, the best way to recommend changes and improvements to the Xbox One or 360 is through the Xbox Feedback website. We appreciate your feedback and continue to work on improving the Xbox experience.

Of course this happens after I upgade and buy a new 500GB console 1 month ago while owning a perfectly good launch day 20 gig console working for 9 years (using external sticks). I’m curious if the quality of the free montly games goes down after this. They have been good so far and I believe that was a bone tossed to us because of lack of good X1 games and the MCC debocale.

Finally, my whole 1 TB library just a snap away of my reach. Before this, it was a pain to organize all my games in chunks of 32GB on the same 1 TB drive. Having to connect it to the PC, rename the Xbox360 hidden folder and then plugging it back to the X360, not to mention having to mantain a spreadsheet of all games stored in each hidden folder.

Now… If only the entire DLNA interface was re-written with modern UI design and 64-bit large file-size MP4 container and MKV container support was added with AC3/DTS support. Miracast would be nice too!

^^This. They should have focused on being a replacement for your Roku before replacing your whole television interface.

So happy that I did not buy a new HD, but sad that I am not in the preview program this round. I have been a part with the other previews.

Great for all of us people who still love the Xbox 360, great to have up to 4.5 TB of Storage at once, though sad that it will be slow than an internal drive, looking forward for this “later this year”, until then happy with my 7200 RPM 500GB Hard Disk Drive =)

This is pretty great. Maybe in the future, once internet is super-super fast, I can install games to my onedrive an play them on a portable Xbox Surface 360 with LTE. Of course this means it’s going to have to be an always online device… I wonder if people will be ok with that by then…

I really do hope this means we’ll be able to use the external drive as game storage / loading. If that’s the case, then I’ll be buying digitally for a while to come.

I blame ms for the holding this back artificially for so long. Modders have long been able to access those extra tbs of potential hd space. Ms set the external usb limit artifically at 32g x 2. which is pitifully tiny. So they could sell their overpriced/undersized proprietary drives. So we are expected to swap them out like 8tracks?

a pc user would look at this and be shaking their head in disbelief like seriously 64 total??? thats it?

Ms for the longest time was b.s about it not being possible with the infrastructure of the system which everyone knows was pure b.s.

MS is only doing this now because they put it off for so long. We could have easily had this a long time ago, ms did this on purpose prolong their hd monopoly.

This is a case of gee thanks ms for finally delivering something way after its been asked for.

Can an external hard drive play Xbox Originals, or do we still need internal Microsoft storage to play those downloads?

Still needs internal. The BC partition is on it.

will be the games that need internal hard disk to install (Battlefield 4, Destiny, etc.), can they be played on a console with this external HD? I hope so

I have a spare internal 250 gb hard drive is it possible to get a connector and use it via usb?

Yes, use a usb to sata adapter or remove the drive from its enclosure and put it in a usb 2,5″ enclosure. The last will void the waranty of the drive though, if it still has any.

MS is well aware of those and there will be another large ban wave soon, which usually happens around the time of the next OS update. Parasites trying to profit off the games industry have got it coming.

What will the hard drive requirements be? Hopefully not USB3 like the Xbox One since the 360 should be fine with a slower speed, and it would allow us to use older drives.

Oh cool! I was gonna need an xbox slim to have enough storage in a single device.
