Xbox 360 System Update for Preview Program Members – Now Supporting 2TB Hard Drives

Back in March we announced the Preview Program would expand to the Xbox 360 and work much like the Xbox One Preview Program – selected members would be able to sign-up directly from their Xbox 360 and once registered, have the opportunity to install system updates and experience the new or improved features before they release to the general audience. One of the most requested features at the Xbox Feedback website was for larger external storage for the Xbox 360.

The next update for Xbox 360 Preview Program members will allow the use of 2TB hard drives to store Xbox 360 data. If you are not part of the Preview program you will get this functionality later this year. In addition we will also no longer reserve space in advance on your hard drive.  If you are using 16GB of hard drive space for games – we will only take 16GB of space. And just like today – you will be able to use two external drives at a time.

Note: Some drives may be incompatible or have performance issues. If you already have space reserved for storing Xbox 360 data, you will need to clear the Xbox 360 storage to gain full access to the drive. If you are in the Preview program, please review the list of known issues before formatting your drive.

As a reminder, the best way to recommend changes and improvements to the Xbox One or 360 is through the Xbox Feedback website. We appreciate your feedback and continue to work on improving the Xbox experience.

Should it be USB2 drive or USB3?

Since the 360 only has USB 2.0 drives, buying a USB 3.0 drive would be a waste of money and offer no gain in performance. It would work if you had one you wanted to use it (as it is backwards compatible), but you would see no performance gain in file transfers or loading as it would still be limited by the USB 2.0 bus speed.

    i have 1 question:

i already have a 500 GB hard drive from Xbox 360 and a 32 GB USB port to back up my saved files, this says that now i can get my 500 GB from 460 GB from total space to it’s maximum capability (500), but this means that i need to reformat the hard drive and the USB to get the full capacity of both drives??, i hope it’s not, because my internet connection i’ts not that good to re-download everything again and i also don’t want to lose all my saved files from my games, i have a good progress in msot of my games and i don’t want to lose them… again xD

so it doesn’t count with USB drives or the official Xbox 360 HDD??

USB drives yes, internal HDDs no. I think you’re forgetting binary versus decimal sizes too. A drive’s size will always be reported smaller because of it.

Lucky you. I have a 500 and two 250 GM HDD for mine. I’ll be able to recoup some of that money however by selling them though. I think I might have to keep one of them so I can still play the old Xbox original games that I own.

Sure, take out the internal one and only have the external drive attached. 😀

I just tried this and it doesn’t work. The 360 needs to install an Xbox Live update and it won’t let you install it to an external drive. Not sure if this is a bug in the preview or if this is the way it has to be. For now, though, you need internal storage in addition to the external storage if you want to use Xbox Live. :/

I don’t quite understand what “If you already have space reserved for storing Xbox 360 data, you will need to clear the Xbox 360 storage to gain full access to the drive” means. Does that mean if I already have a 250 GB internal hard drive for my 360 that has lots of games and DLC on it, I will have to clear that one completely in order to use a 2TB external hard drive? I’m confused.

If you are using an external HDD or Flash drive that has more than 32GB you could still use it but only up to 32GB so that portion would need reformatted to the new system and wouldn’t just be able to switch over.. This has nothing to do with the internal HDD’s.

There’s a saying, “Those who ask receive.” It isn’t bitching. I personally tweeted Major Nelson two months ago as well as other people, he replied saying he’d look into it!

The more people ask for something, the greater chance of being heard. Like protesters, for example.

I hope they get their role and demographics right this time. If they had wanted my parents generation to have bought a console, they wouldn’t have made it TV interfacing…. (Seriously, do any of you have 60+ parents at Microsoft? A new *remote* can be a several-day ordeal.)

If you want older people involved and buying, let me tell you what interests them game-wise:

PoGo: Partner up with EA on this, and consoles will fly out the door.

1vs100: Some sort of big online trivia or bingo, maybe part and parcel to the EA PoGo expansion above.

Hoyle Cards: Many of them I know are already playing cards via webcam on PC with friends. If they had an ability to play the games they know and understand well socially from their couches too, sales will go up. Add an old fashioned Solitaire and this is done. Partner with a brand that they know and you’ve got money coming in.

Social Games: Make part of the XDK have something to facilitate the port of games from Facebook and leave it up to the developers to adopt it or not. The ones who do will have to partner up to share revenue from micro-transactions, but the ability to be comfortable in front of the big screen is appealing to the seniors I know.

Most importantly, this gaming experience needs to be bundled, marketed and targeted at that audience.

I know many senior citizens who *wish* that current game consoles catered to *what they want to play*.

Now run! They’re not getting any younger… If the distance between consoles is as long as the last generation, I only have 2-3 consoles before retirement myself. I hope for my sake that you integrate more SmartGlass style features into things moving forward as it is getting harder to grip a controller in my 40s.
