New Features in Preview for Xbox App on Windows 10 and Xbox One

Xbox keeps getting better with more new features coming to preview this month for both Xbox One consoles and the Xbox app on Windows 10. We’re making the Xbox app more social, while also giving you more control over your Xbox experience. Also, this month we are delivering several new fan-requested features to the Xbox One console and Xbox One SmartGlass.

  • Xbox on Windows 10

Let’s take a closer look at what’s coming to Xbox on Windows 10 with this month’s Xbox app preview and Windows Insider updates from the Windows team. We know you love recording and sharing game clips and screenshots, so this month we spent time enabling that feature on Windows 10.

Game DVR for PC games – The Game bar lets you record game clips of your favorite Windows games.

Screenshots – Take screenshots of Windows PC games by pressing Windows + Alt + PrtScr. Just as with Game DVR, you can also do this by clicking the “Screenshot” button on the Game bar.

Live Tiles – The Xbox tile on your Windows 10 start menu now welcomes you back, showing off your gamerpic and letting you know when you have new messages and activity alerts.

Avatar app – A new app is available in the Windows Store to customize your Xbox avatar’s appearance and outfit your avatar with a vast collection of items.

User profile – You can see another gamer’s bio, location, reputation, tenure, and other information in the more info page, including their animated avatar.

Real name sharing – Similar to the features we brought you in the March update on Xbox One, you can now choose to share your real name on the Xbox app with all of your friends or with everybody.

In addition to keeping you connected to your games and friends, we’re giving you even more control over the Xbox experience on Windows 10.

Xbox One Now Playing and media controls – The games and apps you’ve used most recently on your Xbox One are now displayed when you connect the Xbox app to your console. You can also use the Xbox app to pause, fast forward and rewind.

Live TV streaming and PIP (picture in picture) support – For preview members with an Xbox One Digital TV Tuner (in 16 European countries and Australia) or a Hauppauge 955Q TV Tuner (available in the U.S. or Canada) attached to their Xbox One, you can now stream live TV within your home from your Xbox One to Windows 10 PC running the Xbox app.

Xbox controller drivers – The drivers for Xbox controllers are now included with Windows 10, so you no longer have to download and install controller drivers on Windows 10.

The Xbox app will automatically update to the April preview version when it becomes available in the Windows Store. Once you receive the update, your version number should be 4.4.9014.0 or higher. You can verify the version number of the Xbox app in Settings.

  • Xbox One and SmartGlass updates

The Xbox team continues to work hard to bring the many fan-requested features on the Xbox Feedback site to Xbox One and Xbox One SmartGlass, with the following items being available to preview members this month:

Over-the-air TV for the U.S. and Canada – Earlier this month, we announced the preview for an Over-the-Air Tuner for the U.S. and Canada.

Power on and off from Xbox One SmartGlass – The beta versions of the Xbox One SmartGlass apps for Windows, Windows Phone and Android will be updated to let you turn your Xbox One on and off.

Wireless Display app – Try the Wireless Display app to cast photos stored on your phone to your Xbox One, or to stream non-protected video content from your PC to your Xbox.

User-selectable power mode – Select your preferred power mode, either Instant-on or Energy-saving mode.

Voice messages – The ability to send and receive voice messages from the Xbox One messages app continues in preview this month.

For more details about each of these features, check out the full story at Xbox Wire. And stay tuned for more great Xbox features coming your way on Xbox One and the Xbox app on Windows 10.

Don’t forget to let us know what you think at Xbox Feedback.

That is a nice line up of features for the windows 10 preview and xbox one owners – it’s all coming together nicely.

Major, speaking of this feature “Live TV streaming and PIP (picture in picture) support” why is this limited to those tuning adapters? Is is possible to stream the HDMI input the same way so we could watch cable TV the same way?

commented as such above. Why this model specifically???? to get people to run out to pay for this latest version whereas another model would do. Only thing that comes to mind. “Cough cough monopoly”

My main question is why can we not stream from the HDMI input to a windows 10 device?

        Like

      • DustoMan

HDCP would be my guess. I don’t think you can stream HDMI video to SmartGlass either. Just digital TV off the tuner. I mean, if a Slingbox can’t do it. Why would an Xbox One.

I don’t see why they could pass signal through the unit and not capture and send it a different way? Don’t these console strip the HDCP off anyway since that is how people originally captured PS4 by going through the XboxOne?

My specific scenario is using a TiVo into my Xbox so you would think that signal could be sent out just like using a tuning adapter.

While what you are suggesting is technically possible, it would make content providers and cable/satellite/tivo angry. Microsoft doesn’t want/need to fight that fight.

I don’t know since most of them already offer free apps for mobile devices to stream their content as long as you are WiFi. I think it is just MS not seeing this as an option for some reason. It would be nice if they would at least comment on it a little bit.

Snap is cool and all, but do we really need 1/4 of the screen taken up just to show the song information. I know what song it is. I picked it!
    “Xbox, hide snap.”
*goes back to full screen while still playing music.*
    Problem solved.

    Like

    • Peter

Problem being that this isn’t windows where you can literally drag the window size to however you want it. Have to find a set predetermined window sizes that work best while still allowing you to snap it and view other windows
The xbox interface is more rigid and hard to accommodate the snap system into

like trying to fit something into an interface and environment it clearly wasn’t designed for. On a pc you can easily resize the windows, on tablets you have your finger . On both there is grab the edge of the screen and move ability not on x1

personally i think snap in xbox is stupid to implement so half baked. It’s clunky and doesn’t work quite as it should in theory on the x1 vs say a pc or touch device.

Iit takes up an enormous amount of real estate, there really is no resize ability.

      Like

      • Shogun1x

This should be so easy though. There’s no resizing needed. All they need to do is program a new command, Hide snap. Either the music app takes up 1/4 of the screen or you say “Xbox, hide snap” and it disappears but still plays the music. That’s what I’ve been asking for since the xbone launched, and I know for a fact I’m not the only one. But here we are a year and a half in, and still can’t really use custom soundtracks because it messes up the gaming.

It should be like it was on 360, where it was in the background. It also allowed for games to use custom music, like the NHL series where you could customize goal songs, intro songs, etc.

I agree 1000x percent. I’d also like something besides pandora or xbox music. I want to be able to use spotify connect like on the PS4…that’s the single best feature they could add in my opinion. Playing mkv is great but I had many other devices I could do that on. Playing music through my sound system while gaming can ONLY be done through the xbox unless a switch cords around Everytime. It’s ridiculous to have 1/4th of the screen taken up for music while playing a game.

why only one specific tuner hauppauge 955q, why not their older models or heck other tuners? Why this latest model specifically? nepotism? why not support a broader range of tuners

What is this a scam between hauuppauge and ms to force people to buy this specific model? its not like they added anything radically different or specific to this model

someone explain it because it makes no sense other than the obvious nepotism or behind the scenes agreement to pimp them specifically for some kind of kickback

The tuners are still in beta and there is an official Xbox tuner to be released in a few months. And nobody is forcing you to buy anything.

You used the word nepotism twice, I think you are misunderstand the meaning that word. Nepotism is the practice of favoring relatives or friends, usually by giving them high paying jobs.

As far as the beta releases for iOS they are able to releases builds on regular.. My current smart glass is the newest beta build which you can receive through the test flight app that Apple uses for beta apps… So this is more perplexing.. Also it could just be that it may take them a while to have the build working in beta for iOS and they would rather devote time and resources on the platforms they can easily churn out code for.

This is nice but there is a SERIOUS bug with the Xbox One Preview Program Dashboard. My mic has stopped working. When using the Stereo Headset Adapter, a 3.5mm headset/mic will work for game sounds and you can hear everyone in your party but they can’t hear you. Mic sounds do not register. This happens on every 3.5mm headset I’ve used now for the past month. This includes a 3.5mm Turtle Beach, a 3.5mm Skullycandy earbud, a Samsung earbud, and a pair of Sony 3.5mm headphones/mic. These headsets/mics worked for months and now none of them work. Other people have reported this issue on the Xbox preview forums but it remains unfixed. The only way people can hear me when I use the Stereo Headset adapter is if I plug in the 2.5mm cable (that came with it) to the headset adapter and use my original mono 360 headset.

Hey Michael, I know this is unrelated. I saw your comment in a previous article and I could not find a way to message you privately. Sadly, I was not chosen to me a beta tester for the external HDD for Xbox 360. I have just two questions. First, I know you can save and backup games to this external HDD. Can you load games from it too or do you have to first transfer the game to the internal HDD? (I do not have a Xbox One so I do not know how it work on that to get an understanding of how it will work on Xbox 360). Second, does the external HDD have to be a FAT32 or eFAT32 or a NFTS? Thanks

        Like

      • Michael Burden

In regards to the external drives on the 360 (as I am in the 360 preview testing it right now), you can install and transfer games onto the external hard drive. You can also play them from the drive so you don’t have to transfer them back to the internal. As long as you have a good enough performing hard drive, you will not see any problems with game performance. I personally am using a 3.5″ 7200RPM 1TB Hitachi Deskstar in a USB 2.0 docking station – I prefer the 3.5″ drives because they are cheaper, have higher performance, and are generally more durable than 2.5″ laptop drives.

You will also have to format the drive in FAT32 before the 360 formats it if I am not mistaken. I don’t think that has changed with the update, but I never looked further or tried the other formats. It does not matter on the One however.

        Like

      • Rohan Mayers

Thanks for answering my question. I really appreciate that. Just to follow up to make sure I understand you. First, the games can be played directly from the external without having to be transferred to the internal and second, the external has to be FAT32 so NTFS won’t work. I am currently using a DIGISTOR 1TB External Hard Drive for PlayStation 3 (PS3) – USB 3.0 / 2.0 I got from Amazon as an external back up for my PS3. This is a FAT 32. Will this be a good external for the X360? Thanks.

        Like

      • Michael Burden

Yes, you can play the games directly off the external hard drive, no need to transfer back to the internal drive. I believe that that the drive does have to be FAT32 before the 360 formats it into its own file system (as that was the way it has been in the past), but that may have changed with the update – I just haven’t tried it that way.

That drive should work on the 360, however once you format it tho use on the 360 you will lose all the other data you may have stored on it, so you should back it up if you need it in the future.

        Like

      • Rohan Mayers

Thank you for answering my questions. I tried looking up for a fat 32 desktop external hard drive on amazon but I did not see any. I am so excited about this. I already max out 2 500GB xbox 360 internal hard drive with over a 150 digital games. I would have been a perfect candidate for the beta test. I am starting to back up the digital games on my PS3 (I have almost 200) and on my X360 in anticipation to Microsoft and Sony shutting down PSN and XBL for 7th generation console. Hey last question, do you have any idea when this feature will come out of beta? I am impatience. Thanks.

        Like

      • Michael Burden

Sorry, I have no idea as to when Microsoft will release the update to the public.

In regards to the hard drive format, you don’t need to buy one formatted that way as you can format it in FAT32 with your PC or Mac before hooking it up to your 360.

I absolutely love the Xbox One and the consistent updates but seriously, how much longer will it be until you guys allow us to rip our music to our HDD’s like BOTH previous systems allowed at launch and, of course, to let us play music in the background instead of snapped to the side? This is all I want dammit.

    • Nick Peck

Rip it on a pc and put it onto a usb stick/hd and play it that way? I don’t think ripping directly on the system is high on anyone’s list to be honest. Just used the media player, works fine.

      Like

      • sero.evo

You still have to snap it and waste screen space, no matter what the source. The forced snapping method seems either arbitrary or passive aggressive on behalf of MS. Just give people what they had on 360, which is true background music.

Also, if they allowed ripping to the hard drive, that’d perhaps open up the ability to use custom music in games again (like NHL).

        Like

      • Nick Peck

Not sure if any comments changed but yah I know what you mean. I’m not disagreeing with you by any means, background music should be there. I just meant the cd ripping wouldn’t be a huge “to do” for them.

I just meant rip it on the pc to the media drive, plug it into the xbo and there ya go.

        Like

      • sero.evo

Even then, that’s fine for simple kind of one off uses, but ripping to console or full streaming from PC (ie playlists) is still a superior option.

I think the main reason the restrictions of the One are so frustrating is because all this was there before, on the 360. New hardware should advance, not regress.

If you could only use background music or music at all via Xbox Music, as annoying as that’d be, I could at least understand the motivation ($$$). But as is, it’s just arbitrarily a step backwards.
