They could be called fillers if any actual next gen games were released lol

Dude, it’s even worse on PlayStation. This console gen is turning out quite differently than the hype suggested.

Playstation they have the last guardian, it was worth owning a ps3 in 2007 and it’s worth owning a ps4 now in 2015!
Joke aside, at least it isn’t as bad as on android stores and such for now, hopefully it won’t reach that level of shovelware.

lol there games , and some are better than the triple a games like mercenary kings its more fun then titanfall or hardline and way cheaper. People baffle me first there are not enough games then there not triple A games so they don’t count wtf how spoiled are you go and play the games you like then . I want more on the x1 as the ps4 has amazing indie games the x1 is empty when compared to the games they have . you are not a gamer a real gamer knows its about the game and having fun not if its a 100 million dollar game or a 3 man team game there all games and there all great and should be on there .

I think it is technically possible, but consoles lack of performance to produce decent visuals at said resolution, the outut via HDMI is limited to 30 Hz and the penetration of 4K displays is not that great. Developers could do it, but why would they?

I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting since Kinect tech is proprietary to Hololens.

That’s why MS needs to implement it.
Kinect could work a lot better with OR than the OR camera and make VR (not Hololens AR) also work with the Xbox consoles.

I think MS believes AR to be the future and VR to be more of a fad (not agreeing, just my observation). I can’t see there being a big enough standalone market to support the R&D costs of the Hololens project, so I think MS will keep all of their proprietary software and hardware in-house; making Xbox and Hololens synonymous to increase demand. Since the future AR and VR marketplaces also seem to be at odds in terms of competition, I can’t see why MS would logically let the Kinect hardware fix it’s future competition’s biggest problem.

Yes, indeed. Well it could be a fad, so could AR So far there are still quite a lot of issues with VR. The thing is, if it isn’t a fad and MS just sits idly by waiting for the competition to gobble up the market, then MS is all the worse for it. OR would of course only work with Kinect on Xbox hardware in this case.
I personally would like to see a Lumia phone that could work like the Samsung Gear VR systems, that way, no harm no foul. If VR is a fad, then people didn’t waste their money on an expensive system they could only use for VR and only wasted little money on a docking headset. They’d still have a high end smartphone.
Hololens is also not designed for the Xbox as a companion, Phil Spencer himself already made that clear, it’s meant to be a productivity tool first. Cool gaming applications could come forth from it, but that will depend on the developers.

I completely agree with your assessment of whether VR is a fad or not and the effect it would have on MS. But MS has a reputation of putting their eggs in one basket. That said, the license agreements would be messy at best between OR and MS if the Kinect became a part of the OR development. And then MS has to worry about VR and AR competing in the future and MS has their money riding on AR. It isn’t hedging their investment to make a potential competitor more successful. I would love to see MS doing more with their tech in VR, and the idea of a Lumia/ Samsung VR hybrid (for lack of a better term) is a very good one.

THe Kinect was not originally designed as a companion for the Xbox. It’s standalone potential was realized for the Xbox hardware and MS moved R&D in that direction. But it too was originally just a productivity tool (and it is still used as one in many cases. And for every failure the Kinect has as a gaming device it excels at as the tool for which it was designed.) And Spencer has been contradicted by Nadella (who ironically is not much of an Xbox supporter) when he stated that Hololens was being optimized for entertainment purposes on their hardware systems. that I believe is just a matter of addressing the public and investors though. I think Spencer wants to focus on the now of Windows 10 and Xbox integration and leave what is coming in the shadows until it is more of ironclad, while Nadella likes to put the hype in the forefront a bit more.

But no matter how it plays out and what hardware and software goes where, the future of AR and VR is going to be very interesting. I personally. as a gamer, would love to see Kinect being used by the OR team with MS backing the R&D. I just know how money talks and everything else walks, so I don’t see it happening.:)

Yeah, that’s why I said it in the first place. But I don’t necessarily see them competing. AR and VR are their own thing and missing out on one for the sake of the other might be a big mistake. It’s going to be interesting indeed.

Actually it makes more sense for Microsoft to license the Occulus Rift for the Xbox One than to develop their own VR solution, depending on how along they are in their own research phase. They could then spend those resources they were working on VR (you know they have something brewing in secret) on adapting the Occulus and increase them on Hololens. Kinect would still work for it – it is not exclusive to HoloLens by any means – and pretty much a given if they want to have it turn back into a success. They probably don’t have to worry about SONY adopting Occulus since they have their own VR headset in production, and we know SONY doesn’t really care for competing products on their console (EA Access as an example) in older to maximize their own profits.

Having both VR and AR options for the One would be a definite advantage over SONY, as they would be behind in the AR realm if that takes off and Microsoft can jump tight into the VR market with a licensed Rift without spending any more R&D on it.

Yes and OR would gain even more traction over Morpheus in that case because of wider platform support, which it already has of course, but even moreso.

The Kinect is not a”exclusive to Hololens,” according to Alex Kipman “Kinect is Hololens.” He went on to explain that the Kinect was originally developed as the sensor for MS’ AR project and was used for other MS applications when the sensors’ potential was realized as a standalone. At one point Aaron Greenberg eluded to the Kinect as being “a component in the larger hardware design” of Project Natal. What he described as “the future of Natal” is almost a direct representation of what MS is presenting Hololens as. So it isn’t a far stretch to say that the Kinect is the Hololens’ sensor by design.

I think you missed the point of why I said that MS believes AR is the future and that VR is a fad. If MS doesn’t see a future in a line of tech, they traditionally do not spend in R&D for it. MS is not an easy sell to investors when it comes to hardware (even though they are very successful, they are still looked at as a risk due to their history of huge R&D for products that never evolve, and MS knows it), so any MS exec that understands reputation to numbers will protect the Kinect name and keep it affiliated with MS. Not to mention, MS isn’t going to let OR run away their hardware and develop VR software for it without wanting patent/usage rights, and OR is not going to pay out for R&D on a device that they will have to share with a future competitor whole they have spent so much on working on the sensor issue in-house already.

Finally let’s be honest, If MS sees AR and VR as competing tech, the potential to undermine their AR platform is huge. MS would basically be saying “Here is our $100 camera. You can decide where you want to spend the big bucks on our AR glasses or Zuckerberg’s VR headset. At least we get a $100 and a dollar or two for royalty.” Both of us know that statement isn’t going to come from MS, ever. Kinect is the means, but not the money. MS would be foolish to share it and the risk of hurting themselves later on in the VR/AR market is far to great.
